I love this game. So underrated. Great atmosphere, fast driving.

I can't tell which version is the best. I know one version has 'real' multiplayer (each one drives a car) while another version has the 2nd player be in the sidecar, but I don't even remember which is which.

As for this thread, I will add Crazy Cars 3 aka Lamborghini American Challenge. Both are basically the same game except LAC has a 2 players mode and the car is yellow.

The difference with more classic racing games is that you drive on real road, so you have 19 opponents you need to catch up to while also avoiding cars of citizens not racing. You also bet with CPU opponents before the race. Earn money to upgrade your car.

The most important thing in a racing game is the feeling of movement. This will always be bad if the framerate is low. It doesn't matter how many features you add, it's still a bad racing game.

If you prefer GT2 to F-Zero X then you are probably more of a car nerd than a racing game fan. Maybe somebody should make a car management game like those soccer management games. You could buy and tweak cars, hire drivers etc., but skip the racing part because it's obviously not important to you.

it has no effect on physics, track design, sound quality, controls, f-zero x is graphically dull just so it could run at 60 fps

I am dead serious. You really have to learn the racing line and steer with far more precision if you take those off the table. Even master mode is a joke when you have 3 boosts + 1 per lap. Sharp turning on its own isn't bad, but the ability to yaw your craft is way too good.

Top Gear Rally for the N64.

Nothing too amazing until you discover the glitch - riding the outside rail of a corner and holding the analog stick almost at the point where you'll steer back into the road gives you a huge speed boost, which you can take into the next straightaway. Turned it into a completely unique hybrid of a rally game slash arcade racer slash something like Wipeout/F-Zero/Zero-G.

I think this was it, /vr/: the last time someone tried to design an actual arcade-style racing game.

There was customization, in that you unlocked cars and they got progressively better, but it wasn't anally-retentive, and you weren't trying to be a thug-ass motherfucker: you were racing to get dosh against a bunch of stupid caricatures.

It wasn't perfect, but the fuck it wasn't fun.

I'm genuinely not trying to diss your taste, but i suspect you only think that because you never learned to glitch properly on Top Gear Rally.

Go try it. The corner-riding is entirely skill-based, like bunnyhopping in quake, and likewise it defines what the game is and how it can be played. You have to learn it properly, there's no instructions, but it's different to any other racing game's control system and thus makes it unique and extremely interesting because it works so well and so naturally.

*Without* the glitch, Top Gear Rally is mediocre at best. They removed it for Top Gear Rally 2, and that game is awful. You'll need an analog stick to get the best results, naturally.

I do great and manage to get(and hold) first without much issue usually, but as soon as I get to the last stage(I assume?), someone blows past me and seems to be able to go a great deal faster than me on straightaways. Is this intended? I don't seem to be able to catch up to them at all, even in the corners, they just eventually get out of my view and then the screen suddenly fades to black(which I assume means I lost, since I can't read japanese).

/vr/, I am disappoint. This is easily one of the best racing games for the NES if not the best one and from what I have seen no fucking one seems to know about it. To briefly describe it:

You start out with a Mini Cooper, can go enter various races and buy upgrades for your car and better cars on your way to Formula 1 races. However to enter some of those races and to buy those better cars and parts for them you need to acquire higher rank licenses. Sound familiar yet? Yes, this game basically is Gran Turismo for the NES, the only thing missing are the license tests, you get the higher licenses by winning certain races here.

There it is: the first (and at the same time, the last) version of the list. I got so many contributions that I decided to not bother with little updates. Big thanks to everyone who contributed!

I would make a WebM out of OutRunners footage, but I'm too lazy.

Commodore: Racing Destruction Set

This game was one of the first I can remember that had pre-made tracks plus a track editor. You could race on any planet in the solar system and adjust settings like gravity and track surfaces. You could make jumps and also race different vehicles and modify your car for the track. Also featured 2 player split screen.

SNES: Uniracers should get a mention.
