Final Fantasy VII is cool and everything, but it always bugged me how the combat mechanics make every character a blank slate.

FFVI hit the perfect balance of making every character good and bad at certain things, while also giving them a bit of wiggle room with the magicite. You could teach any character any spell, but it was more of a commitment if you wanted to spec a character for spellcasting or physical combat.

FFVII just went full retard and said, "every character can have every ability and switch them around at will"

And ultimately, the real meat of an RPG is in its character customization. Like, that's the metagame, that's what really differentiates RPG's from eachother, right?

>but it was more of a commitment if you wanted to spec a character for spellcasting or physical combat.

I actually forgot magicite even affected player stats in any way, which I guess speaks to how important that kind of long-term planning is. Rather I remember turning everyone into Ultima spamming machines for boss fights and having plenty of powerful fighters and relics to abuse left over without ever really thinking ahead or strategizing.

The second half of FFVI is as bad as VII with it's all-powerful red mage syndrome. Yes the characters have their own innate stats and abilities but most of them are irrelevant by that point in the game.

>> No.1484273

Sabin's street fighter style combos were a cool tie in with another style of game that was popular at the time and made him really feel unique. Agree that everyone else had massive red mage syndrome, yes.

>> No.1484282

>>1484269
Also the min-maxxing in FF6 is kind of pointless since everyone and their uncle winds up getting some sort of "ignore all defenses never misses" attack.

Funny enough, if you want to make a good Sabin though, you have to train him in magic rather than physical. Despite being Slab Hardcheese, almost all his good blitzes are considered Magic.

>> No.1484289

>>1484282
Heard that before, but it isn't true. Or rather, the "if you want a good sabin" part isn't true. The magic power boosting his blitzes is true, but they do massive free damage even if you don't boost his stats.

After he's been defeated by a monster, as he's dying he tells you that he's become blind and deaf, and asks you to talk to his son for him, but there's no way for you to tell him that you're his son.

I really wasn't expecting the game to just kind of let your dad go out like a punk like that, the fact that he died to a random monster on the way to the final boss made it that much more sad.

And this isn't just unfounded personal opinions either. Hell, the review that RECOMMENDS the hack says this about it
>The first thing that must absolutely be said is that I don’t think this was ever intended to be a readable script (like, you know, for actors in a play). There are a lot of stilted lines, things that just don’t sound like anything a native English speaker would say. It even breaks verb tense once, right near the beginning (during Tina’s introduction scene).
>Be that as it may, I get the feeling that this wasn’t done with the presentation of the story in mind. What’s interesting about it is that it manages to make the game sound foreign. Some things just don’t translate well to English from Japanese, and this can be viewed as a study in dead literal translation. Without having any (!) knowledge of Japanese beyond knowing how to greet someone according to the time of day (ohayo gozaimasu!), I can say that playing this hack feels like I’m reading a foreign language, even if it’s nowhere close.

I was pretty moved by the ending of Illusion of Gaia. Will and Kara have gone on this enormous adventure and grown into young adults, facing all the perils of the world and of first love, and they realize that when the world is put back into its proper shape... they won't remember each other. They can only hope that some glimmer of the time they've spent together will stay with them and bring them back together. It's a frightening thought that we might someday lose someone so important to us, but all we can do is try to go on. It's really a beautiful little scene. There's a profound sense of loss, yet they're about to be given a whole new world.

That's the point. Anon was saying Woolsey's "slit his mama's throat for a nickel" part was "rushed, mistake-ridden, [and] corny." Notice Anon's filename for the image in question.
>hurr.jpg
Anon is ignoring (or entirely unaware) of the original Japanese line there which used the common grolious nihongo phrase "slit his mother's throat for a single yen." The phrase is used in other media, as well, such as Samurai Champloo in reference to Mugen and most recently in P3 in reference to a minor character.

I find it an apt localisation there on Woolsey's part, though I can't speak on other examples in FFIII/VI as I'm not going to rifle through both gamescripts to find silly or questionable translations/localisations. Although... two that come to mind are both from nearer the beginning of the game, specifically "loaded for bear" and "son of a submariner." "Son of a submariner" is silly for the sake of silly and "loaded for bear" is too old and obscure of an American expression to be of much use today.

As someone who played and enjoyed Phantasy Star 2, her death didn't hit that hard... you could just tell she was doomed from the start. That said it was pretty poignant when Chaz occasionally got asked where she was by random NPCs.

The really sad thing about you know who dying in PS2 was that she was actually lucky to die, instead of spending the next month or so of her life fighting increasingly horrible ghouls, witnessing the explosion of an entire planet killing billions, then plunging civilisation of the algo system into 1000 years of medieval apocalyptic suffering.

Close.
AE, the open-mid front unrounded vowel, is a sound not overt or obvious in most dialects or varieties of English but common in other languages. Try to listen to how a Kiwi says "egg." They pronounce the E as an open-mid front unrounded vowel.

Properly, the name is pronounced in 2,25 syllables. I add the additional 0,25 for the terminal U sound there following the S. It's very faint and most people can't pick up on it. Try placing your tongue just behind your teeth and blow air through your teeth forcefully (S sound) then quickly pulling your tongue back a very short bit as you suddenly stop blowing air. That's the sound. Difficult to transcribe, I know.

>>1491113
>>1491105
That's not correct. The Japanese R sound is called a rhotic flap. It is a particularly difficult sound for English speakers to note correctly (it sounds like a D to native speakers of English) because not a single English dialect or variety has a single perfect example of the sound at all. Of Western European languages, Spanish has the sound most (Spanish R). While Italian speakers pronounce all other Japanese sounds perfectly, Italian tends trills its R too much for it to be accurate in its approximation of the Japanese R sound.
In English, the closest example I can think of would be the TTs in "pitter-patter." Although very close, those TTs aren't quite right, either.

I get your point on the rhotic flap, but I'm skeptical as to whether it can be so cleanly classified as sounding closer to TTs than Rs. I'm thinking of words that start with the R sound for example (e.g. Ranma, "Last", etc). I think it's more of an in-between.

5 is kind of repulsive for its attempt to replace the pleasant cartoon feel of 3 and 4 with primitive attempts at 3d, but my affection for the story and the characters compelled me to see it through anyway.
