thinking about buying one of these things for a trip I'm taking. basically I want some vidya that I don't need to worry about breaking. plus being able to use batteries is nice.

what do you think one of these bad boys is worth nowadays?

Also, any good sites for getting old vidya for reasonable prices?

>> No.1483715

Amazon comes up with $27. I prefer to use Amazon.

You could try ebay, but most of the buy it now stuff is a ripoff. Occasionally you can find some good deals in an auction, but often some retard will come when there's a couple of hours left and bid up the price to something unreasonable (I've seen people bid more for an item in worse condition than a buy it now item in better condition) as the seller grins and rubs his palms together.

Imo, the game boy isn't a very good console. You would be better off getting an advance or a modern handheld (surprisingly most of the good games are made for those these days), since it can play game boy games and advance games, as well as having a backlit screen (if you get an sp or micro, but those things are too tiny for my taste).

>> No.1483721

>>1483715
The Micro does not play original GB/GB Color games, it is actually the only GB that isn’t backwards compatible.

>> No.1483727

>>1483721

Sorry, that one slipped my mind. Still would be better than a gameboy imo, as not having a backlit screen really sucks balls and the gameboy library is unimpressive.

>>1483715
eh, but here's the thing right. there's tons of random ass, decent Gameboy games. that I just haven't played. I know I can play them on GBA, but I think my nostalgia demands a gbp.

I grew up with a gbc, and it was ok, but I didn't like the curvature to the body of the portable. The gbp has a nicer form factor.

I'm thinking about getting that old james bond game for Game Boy, and probably a few other ones. Probably just a handful of games that could keep me entertained on plane and bus rides.

>> No.1483743

>>1483731

If it's nostalgia you're after, then there's nothing I can say.

It should be funny to see people stare at you play with a monochrome brick.

>> No.1483760

If you're playing only GB games, I want to tell you to just get a GBC. The darkness of the GBA screen is depressing, and the display is better than the one on the Pocket.

man, it'd be nice if the NGPC wasn't $50, since with Biomotor Unitron, SNK Card Fighters (this is the good one, not the awful DS one), Metal Slug 2nd Mission, and King of Fighters R-2, that's a damn fine selection of portable vidya. All of those listed games can be had for around $10 a piece (give or take after factoring in shipping).
Also, that microswitched stick, hnnnng.

But at $50, you can get a GBA SP and it's backlit and plays all your games ever and it's built reasonably well.

for pure nostalgia though (also, triple-A batteries), I guess getting the GBP is fine

Aren't JXD A1000s like $40?

>> No.1483881

For $10 more, I could get a PSP.

although, emulation on PSP is kind of eh -- Genesis is great with PicoDrive, but most other emulators aren't as mature and never will be

Game Boy Light should be in my console collection...

>> No.1483939

>>1483704
Game Boy Pocket is probably the best way to play GB games other than an AGS-101 SP. I'd expect to pay $15-$25. Don't worry about GBC games because there aren't many good ones.

>> No.1484151

I like the Game Boy Pocket. Slim & has a headphone jack. Alternatively, the Game Boy Advance SP has a great, backlit screen.

>> No.1484189

My go-to is an original GBA modded with a GBA SP's screen. All it needed was the screen light and now it's perfect. One of the major reasons for using the GBA is that it can run on AAs.

Because fuck lithium-ion batteries. Seriously. Every li-ion battery is a different shape and the stupid things irreversibly decay even when you're not using them.

>> No.1484207

>>1483704
You'd be better off with an early-model GBA SP, with the light turned off it'll last even longer than a Gameboy Pocket.

>> No.1484775

>>1484189
how'd you go about modding that?

did you buy it prebuilt?

i'm working on the project now, but i didn't want to buy the adapter cable so i'm painstakingly soldering the connections myself onto the ribbon cable. thank jeebus i have a steady hand and love smd projects.
i probably have another two hours of work time left to finish it :(

>> No.1484956

my personal fav is the gb pocket, mainly cause of nostalgia.

but objectively i think the perfect gb is a regular advance with that sd cart that emulates gbc.

>> No.1484979

I'd recommend the gb original. The screen isn't that bad! Honest!

Plus, 40+hour battery life off 4 batteries

>> No.1485019

>>1484979
eh, I think the gbp has better screen quality.

I might swing by my parents house and see if I can find my old gbc before buying a gbp.

definitely interested in playing the old games though

>> No.1485026

>>1484956
>but objectively i think the perfect gb is a regular advance

No. The GBA screen was awful, go for an SP. Preferably a front-lit one

>> No.1485035

>>1485019
Oh no question, but the original GB has a couple of things to recommend it.

1. Durability. These things have survived bomb blasts. You're not going to break it. And if you do? I picked mine up for £7. Not a huge loss.

2. Comfort. The gb is very comfortable to hold and play. More so than the gb pocket if you're a full grown adult with full grown adult hands. I find the pocket to be a bit squashed.

3. Battery life. Like I said, over 40 hours. You will never match that off two AAA batteries. And if you run out of battery life, pull them out of some nearby tv controllers!

4. Cool factor. I used the GB every day on my train commute to and from work for about 6 months. I had a lot of people go "holy crap is that a gb? Do you have 'tetris'?" Hell yeah bitch I got tetris it's a muthafuckin gb. But I'm playing lemmings so...

5. Nope, that's about it. I have said my piece. I would say though that I believe there is no such thing as a bad Gameboy.

The SP was awful, especially the front-lit ones.

The best GBA is an original with a backlit SP's screen modded in.

I only had the original brick gameboy, and I agree with most of the things you said except the comfort part. My hands would always go partially numb after playing it for more than an hour or so.

>> No.1485047

>>1485026

I hated the SP, human hands are not meant to hold squares for extended periods. The original GBA's ergonomic wings made it much more comfortable to hold for games like the Metroids and Gunstar Future Heroes. I tended to find a place to sit and get comfy for those, anyway, so making sure it had decent lighting wasn't enough of a problem to make me put up with an SP's shape.

>> No.1485150

even if it won't be in color, I still recommend my all-time favorite game based on a game based on a game, the based Pokemon TCG for GB.

Also, Donkey Kong 94, Kirby's Dream Land 2, Wario Land 2, Game and Watch Gallery 1+2, Metroid 2 (be ready to map), Pokemon Pinball, Final Fantasy Adventure (aka Seiken Densetsu) and Final Fantasy Legend 2 (aka SaGa 2). Just off the top of my head, those are games I like that you can play on a GBP.

You have tiny hands like little girly-man. I laugh at your puny hands. Bwhahahahaha.

No but seriously I haven't had this problem but I have huge hands. GB Pocket gives me this instead.

>>1485151
Yeah I was totally stunned. My brother got me it for my birthday a few years back and after a few weeks of playing it on my commute I noticed the batteries were just NOT DYING. It took over 2 months for me to kill it, which I worked out to be around 43-47 hours (rough guess). Off supermarket alkalines. Became a running gag at work. "Batteries dead yet?" "Nope". I didn't say it was a funny gag, just a gag.

I bought a GBP a few weeks ago. I am in love with it. I like its size, its shape, but I agree with everyone and say its only downfall is no lit screen. I think I'm going to buy this:

I get these for $5 with a few games/accessories so that's what they're worth to me. Your mileage may vary. For features and price an SP is hands down the best deal.

>>1483760
The NGPC is awesome. I still find them cheap. They're about $8 in the fleamarket $15-$20 at resellers here. I wish I could find a decent way to add a backlight though.

>>1483767
1000's are pretty crap. They play GB fine, but why play on that. I only paid $10 for mine.

Why do people feel like the gbp lacks a lit screen? Im sure those of you who feel that are the ones who started or continued gaming after the psx, cause i stopped there, and got myself a pocket recently and it feels totally ok. I mean, yeah the light would make it better, but it would be a plus, an addition and not something to complete it as if it were incomplete.

If you want light get yourself pic related, cause things like >>1487272 look terrible.

Don't let those rose-colored lenses distract you from the original GameBoy's shortcomings:

- LOW battery life. It was never practical as a portable console for this reason alone. You'll get 40 minutes of playtime tops, even out of brand name batteries like Duracell.

- Nothing to protect the screen (or rather, the plastic cover above the actual LCD screen) from scratches, and scratches *will* eventually become so numerous that it begins to interrupt gameplay. We're talking about a handheld that doesn't have a backlight, which means screen damage is that much more noticeable. On the other hand, replacement screen covers probably aren't that expensive. You could get one and then throw a film screen protector on top of it.

- The shoddy internal speaker is notorious for its technical problems and sudden death. Go on eBay and try to find an original GB model that still has a working speaker. Most don't.

You're better off getting an original GBA if you don't mind not having a backlight. They should be around USD $30 used, bearing in mind that they're backward-compatible with GB/C. Personally, I would go for a brighter backlit GBA SP since not only will you be able to see what you're playing, but the clamshell design will keep the screen protected.

You's trollin. The originals could easily manage four hours on most Alkalines. Cutting out the battery light makes them even better. The Pockets are known for being just as efficient, if not better.

My original GB has very few screen scratches, a working speaker, and the battery cover. Oh, and i get plenty of time out of AA's. Also have the rechargeable pack, but i haven't used it in a while so i dont know how well it will hold a charge now.

On the other hand, a few of the LCD lines are broken, which is kind of odd.
