Why was this game hated again? My only complaint is the music.

Not muh Resident Evil. That is all it amounts to. If you ignore it doesn't play like a Resident Evil, you will have lots of fun with it. It is not without its fault but it is better than a lot of RPG's for the system

Yes, especially video gamers who are quick to judge a game based on title. There are several games that would have been better received if they were not "part" of another series

Isn't that the whole point of "gaiden" though? Maybe I'm just a weaboo.

That fucking tubular bells riff over and over again.

It was alright, I remember being hyped for that failed gameboy color remake of the first game. I wanted to know if they would work the hunters in somehow.

The gun mechanic in Gaiden was enjoyable for what it was. Instead of worrying about graphics, they made very encounter intense... until you learned how to fuck em up with a knife.

It doesn't matter whether or not it's RE--The game isn't all that great period. Don't come up with excuses to why other people don't like games just to discredit them.

It has some neat features, though (I like the combat)

Not retro but Umbrella Chronicles fits well in this description.

Back in the day, I was a hard-on Sony fanboy and was angered by the fact there was a Resident Evil game on the Game boy (no, I wasn't aware RE1 was also on Saturn, always assumed it was a Sony exclusive).

So I never really played it, worth it?

It's a decent game, it has tons of excellent and original gameplay ideas, the problem is that they aren't executed properly.

- EXCELLENT graphics and artstyle, have ever seen shading THAT good in a GBC game?
- the 'avoiding zombies' system is great. Let's see a zombie is on your path and you want to avoid the battle. You have to aim at a zombie to make him walk towards you, and then stop aiming and run. It's pretty tense and well done as if you fail, aim for too long for example, it triggers a fight you didn't want and in which you start more unbalanced than if you had shot the zombie. Really well done for such a persective with limited view and controls.
- makes good survival horror gameplay on handled with top down perspective
- the 'interactive music' that changes depending on whether there are enemies close is a good idea on paper, but in execution it's terrible. The music constantly keep switching back&forth and it quickly becomes a mess, plus it ruins any sense of suprise you would have gotten from a zombie you haven't seen yet.
- some game progression ideas are just terrible design : for examples, after some point, KEY items and precious ammo for strong weapons randomly appear in places you have ALREADY visited! You would NEVER think of going to check again places you already have checked for things that would have 'magically' appeared, this is a common law of video games they have broken right here and it's pretty dumb.
- the fight system for bosses is just awful and the worst flaw of the game. Chances are, you're waste TONS of precious and precious ammo before figuring it out how it really works and then get stuck on a later boss because of that. Also, that system makes you require tons of ammo to succeed, and ammo is by definition scarce.

>> No.1484604

and finally
- The drop system from dead enemies is flawed too. Some enemies drop ammo, some don't; The thing is, it's not random, it's always the same enemies who drop ammo so basically in order to succeed (in order to save up enough ammo for the later bosses...) you have to learn which zombies you should kill and which you should avoid. Now, that drop system renders ammo management anti survival horror.
- Finally the story is shit, but it is worth noting the effort they did in terms of storytelling and cutscenes in a GBC game.

To conclude, only THIS game and Metal Gear Solid Ghost Babel took the GBC and applied more modern story-based action-adventure mechanics to it. MGS succeeded, RE Gaiden didn't, but NOT due to the more modern criterias (the graphics and the storytelling are well done) but due to some really dumb gameplay choices. The game wanted to be too original or groundbreaking for its own good, all of its experimentations are interesting, but most of them also failed miserably.

If the game:
- completely changed the way bosses worked
- get rid of the zombies dropping ammo and instead put more hidden ammo to find in rooms
- get rid of important items spawning in already isited areas
- put a more traditional music system

The game would be really good. That are the 4 main flaws of the game.

Thank you for the detailed analysis. This is the first time I have played it but I instantly thought of Ghost Babel when I played the first half hour. I have noticed that so far the game is quite generous with the ammo.

The graphics actually come out pretty good for a GBC game.

My problems are as follows:

-Certain Weapons don't spawn until a certain point in the game, even though you can reach the areas they would be found in.

-There is no onscreen indication there is an item nearby until you are standing on top of the thing, with the exception of... files.

-There is no indication what keys go to which doors. Its vaguely hinted at, but until you run up to the door, open the menu, navigate to the key, and use it, you have no concrete idea.

-combat is terrible. Time the bouncing icon against a bar. They could have gone with combat similar to Metal Gear, or had the first person combat let you control the Icon and either swing it quickly and overshoot the center of the bar, or move it slowly and risk having a zombie get close, instead its a crummy timing minigame.

-The game more or less implies Leon is dead or MIA. This was before RE4 came out, and the ending is a shitty cliffhanger that will never be addressed.

If you were to compare Metal Gear to Metal Gear Solid, you can see they are fundamentally the same game: same mechanics, same stealthy approach, same tone. One just had better technology.

Compare RE:Gaiden to RE, and the only things similar are the IP.
