Everything I've read about this thing says it's quite the bag of horse shit.

That true? Any of you own one?

>> No.1481493

No, but you can see footage online. Screen tearing and bad picture quality all over the place.

>> No.1481527

My friends and I had one that we played with. I didn't really think it was all that bad. He left town a bit after though and I never got my own. Months later I'd read about the company taking shit for bad quality or something -but in what I don't know.

The article at that time just said the company was told to not produce it anymore.

Handheld part is okay (aside from widescreen display), arcade stick is decent (little flimsy), the console part is utter trash (tearing, distorted sound, washed out colours). Not worth the money unless you can get it for less than 50 bucks. In that case get it, use the handheld standalone and the arcade stick for emulation on PC.

>> No.1482023

The handheld portion is really kick-ass because of the clicky microswitch joystick. Beats the hell out of playing on a PSP. Screen quality is good. It doesn't match native resolution so you can find little v-sync problems if you really look for them but you will never notice during actual gameplay. I like it a lot. The "console" portion really is trash, though. If you find one at a price that works for you, I'd recommend it.

My damn god man, you really reccomend this biased guy, he thinks that insulting make his opinions more trustworthy and factuals.

At least search for real reviewers that do retrogaming for living

Any real retrogamer say that because the NeoGeo x Gold is basically and emulator with sound issues. and those kind of people like the real deal and make a big fuss with minuscule issues

>>1482049
Yeah.

And it takes a little effort but you can put together a supergun and MVS and will get better results without spending much more.

I mean why not just get a Wii or an Xbox if you're going to emulate?

This thread's been up all night and no one's told OP about the NGX having been cracked? It now runs most retro games from rom images (and iso). I believe it is the only handheld emulator that uses a "clicky" microswitch based joystick so if you're looking for a reason to get one, that's the reason. Otherwise get a Dingoo, JXD or Xperia Play.

You might as well get an actual Neo Geo with the 150-in-1 cartridge.

i own one
and it's pretty bad

the emulation is poor
so is build quality

if you connect it to a tv the image quality will suck too
the build quality of the sticks nowhere near the originals
raster effects flicker like a motherfucker - eye straining in games, that use a lot of them

you could argue, that it is not as fetus-sacrificing-to-satan-bad as ppl make it out to be, but it's nowhere near worth the price tag

snk was right to pull it of the market - it does sully the brand name

>> No.1482569

It also VERY expensive for what it has to offer (dingux-based handled running a copy of Final Burn alpha emulator) but apparently many fools were happy to throw in lot of cash as long as there is a SNK logo on the box.

It is also not an official product anymore since SNK decided to break the deal they had with the company making these thing, so it's just another clone product, like those ATGames crap

>> No.1482579

Ashens illustrates its pretty well.

Its just an outdated version of finalburn running pretty sloppily. And the handheld just plugs into the console so they aren't even really different devices.

Basically its like all the other knockoff console emulators, just made by the company that released the original good one. I guess the problem is that rom carts and special hardware doesn't always get cheaper with time.

>> No.1482581

>>1482249
IIRC the specs are pretty equivalent, although the PSX's Neo Geo emulation is a lot better than the NGX's Playstation emulation and (nonexistent) PSP emulation. Both can struggle with some SNES games and most N64 games so if it's between a PSP and an NGX, the only reason to go NGX is for the clicky d-stick and maybe that it's smaller. If TV Out is important to you be sure to get a PSP that has it.

SNK needs to release a Neo Geo X2.

>- original CPU (you can still buy the 68000) and video
>- 4:3 screen
>- no dock. HDMI and sticks plug directly into the handheld or a break-out adapter.
>- nearest neighbor integer scaling done by hardware on the HDMI output. also has component output transcoded directly from the internal RGB
>- wireless multiplayer and netplay lobby handled by ARM chip
>- every neo geo game built-in, it essentially boots to a 150-in-1. all MVS mode, select button acts as coin insert.

It would definitely sell for $400. And it would completely crash the AES/MVS reseller scene. In fact, it seems like a nice project to do.

I had one and sold it for a GCW-Zero which emulates neo-geo games waay better and on a screen with the proper resolution, but I do miss that thumbstick and buttons. The build quality on the NGX was nice. The software was worse than terrible and specs were lower than what was needed to properly emulate. I might buy another NGX just to dissect and see if I can mod those controls on something else.

>> No.1486445

I remember when /v/ was hyping this thing up. Saying it was going to start a new wave of neo geo games. Ha.

Well to be fair it LOOKS amazing. Just look at the design, it's tasteful and stylish as fuck.

The problems begin when you get one in-hand and realise the build quality's shit and it's an underpowered Linux box running a ratty old emulator.
