And this, my friends, was the first /doom/ thread ever in /vr/, well, not *quite* the very first one, but it was the one where most people posted when the board was made (literally minutes after).

A bit of backstory: We all moved from /vg/ when we got the news about /vr/ being made, we were in our 2nd /vg/ thread since some of us moved from /v/* and it took me really off-guard since I wasn't sure about where should I keep posting. But yeah, Doom catched on and made /vr/ its home in less than a week.

*: (Almost all of us came from /v/, really; the thing was that we were having frequent Doom threads in /v/ at the beginning of 2013 and I suddenly felt the urge of joining in and fixing that one "Recommended WADs" pic -though I ended up fucking it up real bad with unnecessary tryhardness, anyway; I'll fix it one day, pinky promise!- and one day someone told me people decided to create a Doom general at /vg/, we lasted like, what, week and a half in /vg/?)

I'd hoped to put the next big stepping-stone build of Metroid out today, but nope. To preemptively counter any incoming shitposts asking about TSP, remember I stated I wouldn't hype up a release until it was done, which is why today was a "vague" estimate of when I wanted it to get done and never set in stone.

For me, one thing that Eriance has is a grasp of anatomy and actual drawing ability. My artist ability is shit and I'm probably one of the worst well-known sprite artists in the Doom community (imo), but he has artistic skill while I scramble and cobble things together that look vaguely okay.

That's because Doom isn't true 3d, but rather stretched and scaled 2d and the renderer isn't designed for you to look in those directions. Using hardware renderers that convert it to an OpenGl engine like Gzdoom fixes this.

I quite liked quake 1 and didn't mind quake 2, mind you it's been years since playing.

I just feel like he (Vaecrius) does not have much range/tolerance for different doom experiences and seems to think there's something wrong with playing a different style in doom and will make sure you know about it.

Eg: I've enjoyed Unloved but also Hell Revealed type mapsets, linear levels and non-linear levels and gameplay mods to boot. There is no be all end all experience for me, just different variations done well from a more technical POV.
It's why I could play the later levels of Alien Vendetta but then a few hours later be sneaking around cheeki breeki'ing people in a modded S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

The idea that "your map not only sucks, it sucks balls :D" if it will not play as a deathmath level just defies belief. Monsters fight differently to players, even if you make the level with only 1 player spawn and no objects for multiplayer, this apparently does not sink in. Fuel Devourer (from last cacowards) was great fun, but way too huge to be a good deathmatch level.

That said, some levels that function well as deathmatch maps are fun, but to imply it's a requirement for objective quality, as if.

I must have played the ending at just the right time for me as I quite liked it, though from a mapping POV I can see why people dislike it.
Maybe the author was a bit worried of thinking people would not like it all having the tone from earlier so thought "I have to have this big fight somewhere".

It reminds me of game publishers being like "add an [x] section" to devs thus throwing off the focus.

Unloved II does the opposite though and where you finish it (it's incomplete) you're left wanting to see how it pans out.

You HAVE to load an iwad. EVERY PWAD requires a copy of the game (an iwad) to run.

If you're playing a map set like Hellbound, run Doom 2. If you see nothing new, try it in Doom 1.

If its a gameplay mod like project MSX or Russian Overkill, run it in whatever levels you want, it'll work.

There's also the M44, a somewhat later carbine model, with a built in folding bayonet.

You'd reload the rifle with stripper-clips, but like any bolt-action rifle, there's no reason you can't individually load the rounds by hand.

I'm probably thinking using the first few DOOM books before it went apeshit with the demons not being demons, and the acctual game/plot progression.

From a technical standpoint, you'd need more than one character. I'm thinking these:

Doomguy - GEE I WONDER?
Crash - I am completely serious here. Dunno what role she'd fill.
Chubbs - Here too. Could likely be the Fat-Kid of the UAC marines. too useless for anything but guard duty, And killing demons.

For the UAC, it was originally their biomedical lab--as Mars became populated and people started taking part in the terraforming process, the new environments required a constant foray into new medical technology. Superserums, biofoam, medical kits, and more made it the hot topic for chemists and biologists to impress the world with. And, of course, when the teleportation experiments went wrong, it found extra use in holding a shitload of medikits.
John "Reaper" Grimm grit his teeth as he hung against the wall of the corridor just outside a doorway. Inside was the hospital mess hall, filled with the sounds of the wailing of the damned--all thanks to another portal. Another fucking portal. The teleporter to access the medical supply cabinet had been rerouted to Hell, and by the second more Lost Souls poured through.
John lifted up his G36, looking at the ammo display. 32 rounds, a little under half a magazine. He ran a hand over his holster, trying to count how many were left.

And with Buddy's opening, John charged in and started to follow suit. The room became filled with a chorus of screams, of the Lost Souls now aware of this new aggressor, of John's as he swapped to full auto and started emptying bullets, and of Buddy's rocket launcher as he continued firing massive missiles at clusters of demons.

Such noise would not go ignored, however, and the portal started to shimmer again to herald the arrival of another crew of demons.
John clicked dry on his magazine, promptly ejecting it and booting away a Lost Soul to cover his reload. "Where are the others?! I thought you said they'd be here!"
"I said they're coming!" Buddy backed up against John, letting another rocket load into the barrel as he keeps a firm aim on the portal, letting his compatriot handle the legions of angry flying skulls.

With a quick movement, he whipped the 12-gauge pump-action death dealer out, bringing it to bear with the rocket launcher and giving it a sharp yank, letting the pump shuck itself before it fired in tandem with its explosive brother.
"Easy for you to say!" John punctuated with another five rounds from his G36 before quickly ejecting the magazine and jamming it into the mouth of another skull, giving it another boot away. His hand once again yanked back down to his holster, feeling for magazines--wait, what? Nothing? "I'm dry!" He yelled out and holstered his gun, swinging his fist up to slug a Lost Soul in the jaw, savoring the feeling of its bone breaking under his knuckles.

The only ones were soulspheres, and they were basically like another alien race/artifact of another alien race placed down to subvert the demon-aliens' goals by helping the goodguys seekretly. They burts like bubbles and cover you in blue goop that quickly evaporates. There is one that literally floats up to Fly, crashing into him without warning, as he is all wounded up and shit and wary of it. Later he throws Arlene onto one and apparently it is very painful to her, but she was ripped open by a demon.

Invulnerability spheres were never in the books to my knowledge, and the berserk pack was only featured in one scene and it was basically exactly the same as the scene in the doom movie.

My take on Doom would be something a bit different, a play on expectations I suppose. We can start out the movie as a "military fuck yeah!" sort've thing. Our protagonist is a newbie in one of the UAC-supported military teams, with a pretty decent reputation in one of Earth's world wars. We see the Union Aerospace Military division kicking all kinds of ass in human conflicts, while getting the sense that these guys are really amazing at what they do.

So when the thinkable happens on Mars, then Phobos, our team of awesome military dudes is sent in to take back the base from the demon invasion. Our team encounters zombies, who are slaughtered effortlessly, and it's looking like things are going rather well. But then they start to encounter Imps, demons, even a mighty Hell Knight or two, and the ranks start thinning and thinning. Our protagonist, a strong, silent-type, starts rightfully losing his mind, the carnage the otherworldly beasts have brought is unthinkable, and it's clear that the demons are playing mindgames with our hero. Our standard "fuck yeah!" action movie is taking a bit of a horror dive as we see the protagonist lose himself, slowly but surely.

After watching demons brutally torture and mock a helpless civilian, our hero completely snaps. This entire conflict he had been fighting demons with his human training, holding on to that last bastion of sanity, that tiny hopeless sense of justice. If he wanted to come out of this alive, he had to let his humanity go, and fight unhinged. Immerse himself in the carnage and maybe even become a demon himself (figuratively speaking of course)

So now our hero is more like a toned Doom comic guy, kicking ass and clearly enjoying it, maybe a bit too much. I figure the last fight would be a 1v2, with the bruiser brothers versus our hero who is on some crazy berserker rage. Of course, we end with E1M8's ending of our hero dying, but finding himself somewhere else...?

I think you could pull a lot of ideas from the old novels, yeah.

As hokey as they were, Fly and Arlene kind of grew on me. The first book I'd say is definitively a fun read and you could take details and plot elements from there (besides the demons turning out to be aliens thing, which, while not inherently poorly presented, just isn't Doom).

Could add a bunch of gunplay and gun porn, show characters reloading, show a couple of angles of ejection-ports, show some shots through the sights of the gun, show pulsing muzzle-flashes, lighting up dark areas, the loud noise of a gun fired inside of a concrete/metal bunker being incredibly deafening.

The Spider Mastermind with the 20mm Gatling canon, the SIGCOW, the pistols, the shotguns, the chainsaw.

License a bunch of 90's rock, metal and grunge for the soundtrack.

Okay, allow me to give an example.

Since last July I've been working on a wad based on a dream I once had in 2010. Being a three year old dream, it's terribly hard to remember details or even remotely get myself into the correct mindset of the dream.

Now, if I didn't really give that much of a shit about the authenticity of the recreation, I could simply make it up as I go along, finishing it at the pace of any other wad. But that would defeat the entire purpose of the project in the first place; to recreate an accurate interactive version of a dream.

I do work on it. I do "force" myself to open the wad up in DB2 and go through my brain trying to recall the dream. It's not the motivation I lack, but the ability to stop, sit back, and really think about how I'm gonna do this the right way.

My entire life revolves around my projects for the most part, never force yourself to work on one thing if you're just not into it. Your apathy bleeds through and it starts to show. Not him, but I enjoy modding/mapping when I'm "inspired" to mod/map. There are always things involved in that that aren't creative, and are just work, but a lot of it is creative work. What that anon probably meant is that you're confusing this with a profession or job.

I do this for fun in my spare time, it's a hobby/pastime. I don't see the point of forcing myself to work to push out maps or mods that are sub par just so I can be constantly mapping/modding. If I'm not going to create anything above "acceptable" for others to play, and it will be a grind creating that "acceptable" content, then what's the fucking point?

If anything that makes it less likely for a project to be finished than taking one's time; if you hate it midway through it, it's unlikely that it will ever be finished.

I am making my first serious map, and I have some questions:
Is possible to tweak the IA in such way that a city map is actually playable without fighting a thousand monsters at the same time?
Is there any good sniper rifle arround? I found very few of them and the quality is overall low.
How big/complex can a map be before the performance starts suffering on low end machines?
Would people play a free-way map where there are six or seven on each key in different places?
Can I set up something like a "Crow invasion" that happends each hour or so and cleans any gibs and drops from the floor, but leaves any item that was put in the map by the map editor?

Partially this. I make maps and weapons and crap, but right now Doom is a side hobby while I work on my main shit which is music. I obviously have a mapset in the works, but I'm not going to actively force myself to work on maps if I don't want to work on maps today. Because today I want to work on music. (Also, I've announced deadlines for the music projects, but the doom stuff is just "when it's done.")

That said, there are plenty of times where I sit there and I have to go "I need to start this song today/start this map/start doing this monster." I've found that it's often very easy to get going with a project when you just HAVE SOMETHING STARTED. A blank page (be it paper, a DAW, or a map editor) is THE most daunting fucking thing ever. Once I have a handful of rooms started, or a scratch drum and vocal track and some basslines, then the whole thing will start to come together and Become A Thing.

If you don't feel like mapping, just open up your editor and start making random shapes and rooms. They don't have to STAY there--it's important to know what to cut and what you can fix up later.

Once I made a map that I planned to have a big area with the yellow key in it, but I didn't know what to put there yet. I did know what to put in the area the yellow key would open. So I just made a room and plopped a yellow key in it, and then went and made that thing. Once I had that yellow area established, I knew what I could get away with in the area the key was in. (I put Mancubuses in the other room, so I figured the player should have a rocket launcher, so I put one in that room, etc.)

The only thing that bugs me a lil' is that the Hell Dame's first firing frame has her face directly looking at you, when the original bruisers have their heads slightly to their right while still looking at you, but other than that it's fine.

Probably I should try to fix that frame, nothing too big. Also a suggestion: I would've personally included a shooting trigger hidden behind one of Descartes' pics to reveal a soul/megasphere or even an Invulnsphere to trip some balls a little.

Go create a tribute to Plutonia's Map 11, using ONLY revenants; the map should be shaped as if it were referencing something skeleton-related. Vanilla Doom 2 textures only. Wikipedia argues that the human skeleton is formed by 206 bones, so be sure to add NO MORE and NO LESS than 206 revenants through the map
