While we wait for the arrival of "Garage", we can continue to discuss and share obscure and rare games. A long time ago thanks to / vr / I've found "The Book of Watermarks" for ps1 downloading the iso from a torrent almost dead. Today I decided to put it on my mediafire account for all of you

Zero 4 Champ series (PC Engine). It's a drag racing game, kinda similar to the old Hot Rod on PC, you can custom your car and the game also offers a small storyline and some minigames. All the games are in japanese, but the first game is mostly in hiragana, so if you can deal with that you can play the game.

The second game is much more expansive and it has you travelling all over the US, it features even more minigames and more cars, this one isn't that straight forward as the first one, so it requires some reading comprehension in order to play.

Yeah it's a pretty neat Myst clone albeit short. No Japanese required either since it's English audio.

Mistmare is a roleplaying game from 2003 which, on it's release, suffered from several crippling bugs and terrible camera controls.
Most of this was fixed by patches but the damage had already been done.

After several very negative reviews (3/10 by IGN, for example) it was already forgotten by the time it had become playable.

The game however isn't actually that bad.
It's just very mediocre compared to other similar games like The Summoner, Neverwinter Nights or Vampire Redemption.

Still, the world is interesting enough to at least give it a try,
if you can find a copy, that is.

This was a game that I got as a gift when I was a lot younger, and ever since then I haven't heard a thing about it.
I don't remember much about it, other than it being a point-and-click adventure game in the same vein of Myst, but I remember it being extremely interesting.

It was slightly edutainment, though in the sense that it made simple science into full-blown puzzles, and I remember it working decently enough, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere since.

Nemesis: The Wizardry Adventure

I tried to find a decent download for this particular adventure game which supposedly consists of 5 CDs. Some idiots though it would be great to make a seperate torrent for every CD-ROM there is. If somebody has a decent download link, it would be great. it's pretty much the only Wizardry game I haven't played yet and I think it's rare these days too since I don't know where to find it.

The only download I found for this is so slow that it would take two weeks to download this game and I'm not even sure how save the site is.

speaking of adventure games in general.

Did anybody on /vr/ ever played Master of Dimensions? I did as a teen and I would like to run it again but I couldn't do so via dosbox. It was published by Eidos Interactive as far as I recall and is quite interesting because it focuses, as the name says, on dimension travel so you have different and varied settings. I bet this game is hard to find but I'm not exactly sure about it. Downloads are avaible though. Getting it to run on a modern OS is the bigger issue.

http://www.reddit.com/r/gamecollecting/comments/pr1tl/fotw_found_master_of_dimensions_a_rare_pc_big_box/

More than rare, this would be something people doesnt know about a specific game. Imperial Prince on PC-FX was made by the same people that made Sorcerian, Kaze no Densetsu Xanadu and other Falcom games up to 1993. And it has lot's of gameplay elements from those games.

You aren't trying to enter on the invitation of an idiot are you?
Don't enter on an invitation from an idiot. Get your invitation from a different personality. The personalities are the different seahorses, sipping tea, wearing a buffalo, etc.. Apparently they're all idiots except Butts the "where did I put my cigarettes" guy

Also the "demo over" screen I put in the screen shots was what I got right after passing the face and getting the explanation about the book. When I tried again I didn't get the demo over screen but was taken outside to a cone that lead to a tunnel and bridge that looked like DNA molecules. There's more to the demo than I was originally able to reach.

Well, OP only asked for Rare/Obscure games. I mean, chances are the reason a game is rare is either because a.) the game sold so well that it's hard to find physical copies of today (which cancels out the obscure category) or b.) the game sold so poorly that it was not very mass-produced. That being said, a good 90% of obscure/rare games out there are going to be bland, dull or uninteresting. Of course, that's really based off opinion more than anything. One man's Myst rip-off can be another man's holy grail of obscure gaming.

"rare and obscure" doesn't necessarily imply that. Learn to read. I think your comment is pretty insulting to everybody who posted something. it's rare if you can't find it anywhere or in very few places and it's obscure because nobody knows much about it, barely ever talks about it or is just nothing more than a cover for most people with a completely unknown game behind it.

Thirteen years ago Horse was 23, the author of two books, on his way to being named Scotland's author of the year - and in desperate need of money. Getting published (and paid) would have taken too long. His solution: create an ancient-looking, lavishly illustrated, "lost" manuscript about the days after the destruction of Atlantis, then attempt to convince an antiquarian book dealer it was genuine. It worked beyond his expectations: Christie's appraised it at $20,000 and the dealer approached a publisher.

"He thought he'd found the next H.G. Wells or Jules Verne," Horse says. "The book not only had accounts of secret ancient societies but also had startlingly accurate references to World Wars I, II and III, plus nuclear fission and the equation for relativity." But the hoax soon unraveled. By chance the dealer went to Horse's publisher, who immediately recognized his illustration style. Horne talked his way out of jail and promised never to publish the material in the book.

That would have been the end of the story, had Horse not seen two breakthrough CD-ROMs - Myst and 7th Guest - 10 years later, in 1993. "I thought, 'I can do that.' They combined my interest in puzzles and cryptograms with my illustration, writing, and story-telling skills." Horse chose to break his promise. "It wasn't worth the paper it was written on," he says. "I was only 23 then and quite frightened about going to jail."

Horse and Algy Williams, who has a background in TV production, have assembled an eclectic team: another illustrator, a sculptor, a designer of "fiendishly difficult" puzzles featured in the London Times, a graphics and programming team from Epic Multimedia, and two musicians who go by the name of Miasma. "The graphics are photo-realistic and the audio and sound effects are stunning," says Williams.

I'll be uploading this in 4 parts: The 3 Isos, and some extras (a patch needed to play, the scanned manual, box art, etc)

https://www.mediafire.com/?adfb1pb2rlxytdd

Some game backstory:

The Bible and Darwin were both wrong.

That is the premise of Drowned God, a point-and-click, hi-res graphic adventure that will rattle a few cages and get plenty of ink. "It's obviously a contentious subject," says the game's producer, Algy Williams. "If we piss off a few zealots, so much the better."

The game purports that many thousands of years ago an alien race from Orion not only genetically engineered humans but also guided their social and scientific development. Then along came the great flood, erasing much of that work and concealing the world's greatest artifacts: the Rod of Osiris (the Egyptian god of the dead), the Holy Grail, the Philosopher's Stone, and the Ark of the Covenant.

Your challenge is to visit the four earthly and spiritual realms in which these items can be found, unlock a labyrinth of puzzles, and complete several tasks to gather them one by one. Sound like your basic treasure hunt? It's not - far from it.

"We are aiming for a totally immersive experience, a quest for knowledge," says Williams. "Basically you are uncovering a huge government and church conspiracy that has seriously altered human history."

Conspiracy theorists and other denizens of the alt.alien.conspiracy newsgroup will recognize many of the ideas presented in Drowned God: the Philadelphia Experiment, the Roswell alien autopsy, the alien race known as the "Greys," and pyramids on Mars. The game also disputes public perceptions about the Kennedy assassination, Leonardo da Vinci's inventions, and how Einstein formulated the theory of relativity.

From what someone said it doesn't run on a virtual drive, but he might not have had the patch installed. I'd just burn it anyway because CDs are like 6 bucks a pack.

hg101 just put a new article on the tong nou games. and they gave us a shoutout
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/chuteng/chuteng.htm

>Well, that's what fans thought before some guys from 4chan's /vr/ board - who can do great stuff when they don't spend their time insulting each other - decided they would put their hand on this game, whatever the costs. After having turned the Internet upside down, experiencing a frustrating refusal to rip the game from the only Japanese collector known to own it and getting the word from Sato himself that the game was so damn rare that even he didn't have a copy, it seemed like a lost cause. And it would have been, if not for a sudden and unbelievable stroke of luck. As the gang of anons was scrutinizing every corner of the Internet, some guy came out of nowhere claiming a copy of the game was lying around somewhere in his attic. Very few people were convinced that this was the truth. Yet, what seemed like a tease proved to be entirely true. So, that is the story of how Chu-Teng was brought back to civilization - technically, by a random guy who happened to be browsing 4chan at the right time. So, now this game is finally available to mankind, what is there to say of it?

Moon Cradle, it's a sci-fi FMV adventure game released originally on 3DO, and it was later ported to Sega Saturn.

The main character is a detective and he has to investigate the dissapearence of a woman. Unlike most japanese adventure games, Moon Cradle uses isometric camera with 2D graphics and FMV for the actions. It has a pretty nasty mechanic, since the ending you'll get has a relation with a score meter that you can't see until the end of the game. Still, it's a pretty short game.

I saw a game called Monster Racers for DS and was intrigued by it, and found out the game had several Japan-only iterations.
The DS game is similar to Pokemon but instead of fight, you race in a 2D platformer "hold right to win" style.
The older games look less interactive and the monsters look more simplistic, but still sort of interesting.

full motion video, a lot of games did it cheaply by having the video files split into low quality, high compression JPEG images, usually with a 22khz sound file accompanying it. The frame rates were low, the quality was poor, and the codecs even poorer. But full motion video in a game was exciting at the time and some developers really took advantages of the possibilities. Looking Glass Studios for example, flourished in it with their magnum opus, Thief the Dark Project.

Others' efforts ranged from abstract, experimental, faithful, corny, silly, and generally fun.

Some creepy, intentionally at times, not always however.

>Poinie's Poin

I discovered this game a few years ago and imported it for my girlfriend. She loved every minute of it, especially the eclair animals you chase around to gobble up and restore health and that little bakery store that has a hundred of them running around inside. The gameplay is surprisingly solid despite appearances. The dub is pretty hilarious too, especially for the Poinie Tail whose VA did a surprisingly solid job of Cartman. He's a western actor in Japan who speaks English and Japanese fluently and who also I believe translated the game and wrote the English script which is flagrantly non-PG. It has a ton of bizarre terms and crazy language, guaranteed to catch you off guard, something that could only fly in early 2000s Japan.

Anyways, it's not retro but I approve of an ISO dump because this game is rare as shit and impossible to find on the net except on the occasional Yahoo Japan auction. I hope your friend succeeds.

BUT, i did find out that installing just patch 4 seems to be enough for the game to start,

L'autre est espagnol. Aucun collectionneur même parmi les plus gros

C'est une superbe pièce car tout le package, le manuel, le poster ont été

not-so-retro by the rules (2001), but i'll post it here anyway

Original War!

A very unique strategic gem, which rather than massing units like in C&C focuses more on smaller squads, each of your soldier with his own personality. Good tactical combat, cool rpg elements, neat story. I can't recommend this game enough.

This game is pretty hard. This is as far as I've got if anyone wants to share more.

Clicking a certain ball in the conduit room lets you teleport to certain areas, one being this bridge that appears only when you do this. There is a ketchup bottle in an outhouse, and after going through the director project the little squares lead to you getting another book.. On the right there is a building of teleport types after clicking a box with only one pathway working bringing you back to where you started.

Other than that, click the right place in the dome to get a book, and copy the music from what you see, and get it right the first time and you got 2 books. The cauldron puts the books back.

Anyone get further feel free to share. Theres a gun which has three angles and colours, and another shape which gives out a sonic boom thing i have no idea.

The Private Edition site has a detailed compatibility chart. Basically, it wants Win 95-98 or Mac 8.0-8.6, in either case with Japanese language support. Anything outside of that narrow band is buggy, crashes, or just isn't guaranteed.

Windows XP (Home / Pro) bug that can not start the game alert "This program requires the available virtual storage device of at least 3MB" and is out with have gained memory above a certain level in the but has been reported , please try the following manner who this alert is out.

I open the [Control Panel] from [Start].

I open the [Advanced Settings] from [system].

Press the Setup button on the [performance] to open the [Advanced Settings].

Press the SET button of [virtual memory].

To reduce the value of the initial and maximum size after selecting the [Custom Size].
I think that there are such people, which is also the D drive and people drive C only (boot disk) is (drive, but it does not seem mind these two hard drives. But also report that could not be improved if there is only only boot disk there.)

In Settings] button → [OK] button, to close the window and hold down the OK to order the rest, and then restart the computer.
Because it depends on the memory you have gained for values to actually set, we will decrease the value further by repeating the above steps if you do not go well.

Technical Note of Macromedia

Yeah this is what i got in XP seems theres a fix.

Youre going to have to rip the game to a mac volume, as its a hybrid it might take some time to do that if no one has a mac handy, and mounting CDs through basilisk or sheepshaver is impossible. But the more friendly XP/98 option should be fine until then.

Scratch that, you don't need to change them all to Japanese. Here's how I got it to work:

-Install Windows XP SP1 in VirtualBox
-Go to Control Panel > Regional and Language Options
-Click the Languages tab
-Tick "Install Files for East Asian Languages
-Click Details under Text Services and Input Languages
-Click advanced then tick "Extend Support of Advanced Text Services to all Programs"
-Click OK
-Click the advanced tab of the Regional and Language Options window
-Change "Language for non-unicode Programs to Japanese.
-Hit apply and restart.

The game should now work (still throws up a weird error on launch, but works perfectly after dismissing the message, no more #getaProp errors). Some of these steps are probably not needed, but I can't be assed figuring out which ones do and don't need to be enabled; this is how I got it working.

Well, this a really complex game...

How to progress in the game 1

Gage reference (Fig 1)

1. Meter
It shows the time in this world. (How to progress in the game -> Time display)

2. ID Gage
It shows your adaptability degree (How to progress in the game -> Adaptability display)

3. Fuel gage
It shows how much fuel you have. (How to progress in the game -> Fuel display)

4. Tool button
It shows the "tool window" with the tools in your possession. (How to progress in the game -> Tool display)

5. Status button
It shows the "status windows" with your current situation.

Time (Fig 2)

Even in this world the time flows. Every character moves accordingly with their
schedule. The characters you can meet depends on their schedule. When you can't
enter to a certain character home it will show their schedule, the portion in
red is when you can find them at home. Take in mind that you can't meet them always,
like you they will go fishing, or go to replenish their adaptability degree.

Conversation (Fig 3)

This is an adventure game where you progress by talking with different characters.
The story is divided in several chapters, when you get to a new chapter it will be displayed
on the upper part of the screen and the dialogue from the characters in the game will change.
The chapter that you are playing will be shown in the status window.
Also, the dialogue might change even in the same chapter try talking to them to find out more
stuff (things not related to the main story).

Fuel (Fig 4)

To talk with the different characters you'll need to move to other locations. When you move
you'll use a fuel called white gas (白瓦斯), every time you use move the meter will go down.
If you run out of gas you'll be unable to move, mourning in darkness forever (Game Over).
You can get more White gas in the White Gas Store (白瓦斯屋).

How to progress in the game 2

Adapation degree (Fig 5)
When the story begins you'll be in a state called [otonuke]. Whoever you try to talk to
wont understand what your saying. This is something that happens when your adaptation degree
get's so low.
This actually shows up how much in control of yourself you are. If you run out of this it will
be game over.
You can replenish this is stat in the Adaptation Temple 順応堂. If you want to know more
you can ask to the machine in charge of the reception of the Temple.

White Gas Stamp (Fig 6)
It's the currency used in this world. You will use it to replenish your Adaptation degree, your fuel or
to buy things.
To get stamps you can sell the crabs you got fishing in the bindou and take them
to shiga's store.
You can check how many stamps you have in the Status Screen.

Saving (Fig 7)
You can save your game using the typewritter in your room, but take in mind that if your
adaptation levels or fuel levels are too low you wont be able to save. Make good use of your
resources and the information you get.
