Played this while tripping balls recently and the perfect purity of the gameplay (especially gun feel) and level design brought me to tears.

Will there ever be a Doom title that tops this?

This is a great 'take' on Doom. Lot's of split views on this game. I think it's great personally. This was a game that really creeped me the fuck out in '97!

It doesn't have music, just ambiance. I think it fits perfectly IMO.

Doom 64EX is a perfect port as far as I can tell.
Playing the game with a keyboard and mouse feels leagues better than the original controller layout.
Haven't encountered a single glitch and its wonderful.

The game itself does have great moody atmosphere though.
Tons of modern games try to be gritty and dark but most still fall short of being this good.

I just downloaded Doom 64EX about an hour ago, and i've been playing it since. I think it's great, and I haven't found anything wrong with it either.

I think Doom 64 has the most consistent maps of any Doom game, barring E1. The highs may not be as high but damn near every one is solid and well-balanced from a pistol start, as well as designed with no mid-level saving in mind (which means they're never too long, either).

There are community wads I like better but it's my favorite vanilla Doom.

Does using a mouse make it really easy? I mean, it was a pretty sluggish game on the n64 and obviously designed to be played with a gamepad.

I played it on acid some 10 years ago and hated it for some reason. I played it sober recently and found it to be a little better. Still the worst installment of the series and I'd never want to play it again, which is a shame since Doom is my favorite game.

Never understood what people see in this one.

The one thing it does have is atmosphere. But it's still not very atmospheric in the grand scheme of things and the lack of speed and some cramped levels make it less fun to revisit than the original game and 2.

the thing is:
the level design in Doom 64 is more like Quake than Doom.

Christ even Doom 3 is better to you than Doom 64?

I'm not seeing it. Like Quake, it has fewer open outdoor areas and that's about it.

[sploiler]I like Doom 64 and Doom 3 better than Doom II and Final Doom.[/spoiler]

The level design also has has a lot more detail, pillars and such that can get in the way of movement, like they do in Quake. It's not necessarily bad, but it doesn't really fit the more arcadey, fast-paced nature of Doom style controls and combat.

Just played this for a bit after reading this.

Scared me just as much as it did years ago. It's the creepiest, most unsettling Doom.

Pretty much every other Doom game, really.

Am I paranoid, or am I seeing potential for the next Zelda 2 argument in this?
