what was the hardest world/stage for you when you beat this game

>> No.1471468

7-4 all day errday.

>> No.1471480

had a freind who cant get past 5-3 . took him 90 minutes LOL....

>> No.1471493

Compared to the rest of the game, even the last stage, 8-3 is pretty hellish.

Relatively speaking. It's not the worst I've ever seen in a video game, but I would be lying if I said 8-3 didn't function as a speedbump of sorts.

>> No.1471505

yea still not as crazy as smb3 by far

>> No.1471509

I've got to the point where I can speedrun, but the most annoying stage to me is a tie between 8-2, 7-2, or 7-3

>> No.1471679

8-3. Almost a dozen Hammer Brothers in one stage. Fitting for guarding the final castle, but still painful.

>> No.1471681

Vs. 6-3

>> No.1471694

8-3 was fairly easy to be honest.

That last Hammer Bro before Bowser though.....

>> No.1471729

7-4. I played SMB all day every day when I was younger (5 then, I'm 29 now).

I had excellent technical skills and execution, but my child brain simply could not understand how level 7-4 worked. It was a constant roadblock, though I could easily complete the game with a warp to 8-1.

I can't believe SMB2(J) was never released here. I would have loved it as a child. It was just SMB but harder. Perfect.

>> No.1471732

8-3 was pretty hard tbh

>> No.1471741

>>1471732
I agree my strategy was always get the fire power in this stage and keep it till the end.

>> No.1471749

And what's the sequence for 7-4, anyway?

>> No.1471761

>>1471749

>> No.1471881

does anyone here actually go all the way thru or do you all use warp zones?

>> No.1471896

>>1471881

I always go all the way through. I am fucking shocked that it seems like most people use warp zones.

>> No.1472062

7-4 and 8-3 were always the worst.

>> No.1472154

>>1471729
you can play it in mario all-stars, which is the version of mario games i grew up with. its on snes but still

>>1471729
the lost levels on all stars, the reason cheap shit is awesome. hidden blocks before pits if you jump too early, parts before large pits where you instinctively slow down for an enemy and can't regain speed in time. so many little things where if you mess up a little you are died. my buddy and I sent hours on it laughing art every unexpected death

These fucking assholes right here.

>> No.1472574

>>1471442
It used to be 8-3 until I found the second power-up box. Now I think it's 8-2. Fuck that stage. I've beaten the game numerous times but that stage still fucks me. The whole world 8 does really, but it's gotten better with time.

>getting there with no fire balls or at the very least non-manlet Mario

Anyway I don't remember a lot about the game, but wasn't there a mindfuck Inception style level in the end at some point?

>> No.1472583

>>1472576
You mean 8-4? It loops from the beginning unless you get the exact pattern down. There's also a warp pipe you need to use, and an underwater segment. It fucks with you quite a bit until you realize what's going on.

>> No.1472591

>>1472583
Is there any way to discover the pattern without just trial & error? I don't remember there being any indication of "Take this route" in that stage.

The logic I use for castle levels in any given mario game is "follow the most bullshit route". If you see a floating pipe out of your way with an invisible block leading up to it, it's PROBABLY the way to go. Otherwise, trial and error. Newer games (I remember NSMB doing it) also have sound clues when you're going the wrong way.

>> No.1472608

In 8-3 if you're small Mario just jump as soon as you see a Hammer Bro. You can actually jump over them quite easily if you know what you're doing

alternativly, stand right next to them until they jump.

>> No.1472615

>>1472591
Normally just "whatever route you don't want to take." Sucks but that's how they programmed it.
If you have no idea what you are doing 8-4. It's still annoying doing it because one wrong path and you have to do it all over.
I personally found >>1472570 to be a fucking bastard of a level. I've seen people just run and jump and can do the whole thing with no problem but for some reason I seem to get stuck there more than any other level.

The best way to get through 8-3 is to get the mushroom and fire flower (if you didn't know, the level has two powerups). They're both in the sections where there are two hammer bros at once on the brick layers. It's pretty easy to kill them if you know how. Just take it slow, bump them from under and get the powerups.

>> No.1472636

>>1472632
Holy shit that's a helpful map.

>> No.1472663

>>1472608
You can tease them. Stand all the way to the left, as far from them as possible, and jump in place a tonne of times. Eventually, they'll start walking towards you, still throwing hammers. You can get a running start and jump right over them between gaps of hammerthrows.
Do most people not know about teasing the hammer brothers?

>> No.1472675

Every time I play Super Mario Bros. I am astounded at how well programmed the Hammer Bros. are. They don't seem to have any obvious, discernible pattern and they are genuinely difficult and require precise movement to get around. Even running under them is tough since they jump very quickly.

How did they do it? They are a very sophisticated enemy. Fantastic original. For some reason they never had the same "oomph" to me in Mario 3.

My love for this game it's something so ingrained in me that it's a part of who I am, it formed a part of the basis of the relationship between me and my mom. Super Mario Bros was the first video game I played ever, but beyond that it was my mom who played it with me; thought me how to play it. My mom had it on her NES when she was a kid and when I was a kid in the mid-90's only about 3 years old I got a plug in and play version of it for christmas. Me and my mom would just sit there in the sitting room for hours(for her sometimes days) on end just playing Mario, it was days like these I think that gave me my true love for gaming not just as a hobby but as something that brings people together. They have also probably formed a part of the great respect that I have for my mom. My mom is so good at this game that she can play through the first world with her eyes closed. I still remember two years ago at Christmas when we weere having the whole family over for dinner me and my aunt (moms younger sister who also loves this game) found my plugin and play version again and played it in the sitting room. We both got stuck on the last level so I went out to the Kitchen to ask my mom what the pattern in the castle was and before I finished asking the question she'd already answered it, despite not having played the game in over a decade. God I love this game.

Fond memories of playing this game in 1990 on a small black and white portable tv. The sound was broken, and I was stuck for days at the maze-like puzzles in the -4 stages.

Any level with those fucking springs. I hate them.

>> No.1475753

>>1473529
yeah fuck springs. the green ones in Lost Levels are actually easier to deal with because they shoot you right off the screen where nothing can hurt you and i personally find it easier to land after that. all you have to do with those is remember how the screen follows Mario.

most people don't know about that, no. But you don't have to jump in place, it's just that once they've been on-screen for about 65 or 70 seconds they start walking toward you
