Sonic 1
Best Level: Scrap Brain (great music, level design and art)
Worst Level: Marble Zone (not a bad zone as such, just not as fun as the others)

Sonic 2
Best Level: Aquatic Ruin (great mix of high level areas, cleverly designed badniks and tricky underwater sections)
Worst Level: Emerald Hill (too much of a Green Hill clone)

Sonic 3
Best Level: Ice Cap (that snowboarding section, DEM TUNES)
Worst Level: Carnival Night (not a bad level but loses points for not being the most original)

Sonic & Knuckles
Best Level: Lava Reef (huge, varied level with great graphics and music)
Worst Level: Mushroom Hill (not a bad level, just a bit standard. Great background art though)

>Sonic 2 Best Level
>Hill Top
Why Hill Top? It always seemed totally average to me. Average level design, average music, average level gimmicks, average selection of badniks, below average boss. There's nothing horribly wrong with it, but there's nothing great about it either as far as I can see. I really don't see the appeal.
Plus, it has the unfortunate distinction of being the only full zone in the game that's just a recolor of another zone.

>>1442552
Sonic is easy, I beat most of the games without even getting hit, much less dying, unless I'm intentionally doing risky stuff to save a second here and there.
I just find Labyrinth Zone incredibly dull since you're underwater most of the time and it's very, VERY slow paced.
The pinball physics that put Sonic on the map have no chance to shine here either, since the level is completely devoid of slopes (aside from those water slides which you automatically slide down) and there is no room to build up any speed.

>> No.1442591

I thought Hill Top combined the best parts of Emerald Hill and Marble Zone, with high speed platforming blended well with slow, methodical platforming. It also has my favorite color scheme in the game.

This is something I can't agree with at all. There's no pinball or slot machines or any of that that was so characteristic of Casino Night, and the level design is quite a bit different.
The only thing it really has in common is being bright and flashy, taking place at night/late in the day, and having a bunch of shit that bounces you all around, all of which Spring Yard and Collision Chaos did as well. It's a series standard.

I don't really like any of the special stages in the classics very much.
The ones in Knuckles' Chaotix and the Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast are pretty good, and there's some in the handheld games that I think are fine, but other than that they're all pretty much garbage to me.

>>1446523
1. Jumping appears to work. If you jump half decently you can almost make it.
2. You rarely use up and down at all aside from tapping it at speed when you want to roll into a ball, and holding it and mashing jump when you want to spindash.
3. Pushing up and down to move a barrel doesn't make any sense. It isn't intuitive in the slightest.
4. The effect of simply pressing up or down is basically unnoticeable, especially if the barrel is already moving when you press those directions, and there's no real visual or aural signal that anything is being done. You have to HOLD up or down to see any real effect, and if you've pressed up or down and didn't see anything happen, why would you think to hold them?
5. Pretty much everyone is stumped by the barrel for some amount of time unless they knew about it ahead of time. It took me a few minutes. Some people were stuck for days or even years. I'm sure you were stuck for a while as well. "It only took ME a few minutes" as an excuse is a stupid thing to say. This is a series where some entire zones can be beaten in less than two minutes. That a single simple obstacle should take anyone more than a few seconds to figure out is retarded.

Also, it being the only time you encounter a barrel that must be operated in this way to proceed makes the puzzle even more tricky. At least in previous Sonic games, they would introduce mechanics and then apply them to situations that would require greater skill. The up/down barrel is just kinda there....

>> No.1446761

Another thing is the first time you run in to one of those sorts of barrels, no matter what, you're either going to be jumping, falling, or running onto it, and it'll react accordingly when you do, seemingly telling you that its movement is based on physics.

I'm flabbergasted that the majority in this thread actually think Marble Zone is worse than Labyrinth. Marble Zone is a genuinely good level; it's more of a linear obstacle course than most Sonic levels, but it adds a sense of pacing and most of the design elements work really well. There are a few frustrating parts where you have to wait for slow platforms to move, but people act like that's the entire level -- I don't get it. Labyrinth Zone on the other hand is a complete mess. It has a few redeeming features to be sure, but they do NOT make up for how the majority of your time is spent as you play through it. It's long, hard, repetitive, and not fun; it's full of parts that are painstaking, claustrophobic, and slow. Half the time when I get to Labyrinth Zone I just quit a few screens in because I know what an unenjoyable slog it's going to be, and the first half of the game is satisfying enough.

I always thought it was a worldwide consensus that Labyrinth Zone was the big black mark on the game and everything else was good. Apparently not.

I didn't put Labyrinth because it was hard, I put Labyrinth because it was boring! I mean, shit, it's sandwiched between Spring Yard and Star Light, which are two of the speediest levels in the game and play like pinball powered roller coasters. It's awkward! Had Labyrinth been after Marble Zone and before Spring Yard, the pacing would have been a bit better. Though I suppose the 'speed as a reward' formula is more effective when you go Marble (slow) -> Spring (fast) -> Labyrinth (slow) -> Star (fast).

>>1442591

Hill Top is alright but some of the badnik placement pisses me off. Especially that fucking purple dinosaur thing that you're supposed to use as a platform, I always lose rings there.

>>1442614

Well it's got the cannons! Oil Ocean can be pretty okay if you shoot for the high path.

>>1444865

For me it's the weakest casino level in the series. I mean, it's a trope, I expect it in the game, but the level layout is kinda meh. There's some good branching paths that almost are fun but then they loop around or act like a giant ring collection u-turn. The level needs a high path that bypasses any of the unnecessary water sections, shitty forced barrel puzzles, or weird showy bits (the giant cylinder things?).

I think almost every zone in the game has one or two parts that make use of the rolling mechanic, however subtly. Star Light is one of the better examples, but Spring Yard on the other hand is the only one that actually has half-pipes. I really like rolling through the half-pipes with the spike-ball hazards; they're not hard to avoid and it's more fun than jumping on the platform. And you can build up a lot of height just by rolling through a half-pipe over and over -- Newton and Galileo would be pissed.

The first act isn't bad, but that plane switching gimmick was so half baked, and that second act with all the tube sections and that big Robotnik room where you just get bounced around semi-randomly is pretty much complete shit.

Sonic 1
- Best: Labyrinth Zone
- Worst: Spring Yard Zone
Marble Garden is a contender for worst, Scrap Brain for best. Sonic 1 has a pretty middling quality of levels overall but still might be my favorite due to it being the only one with challenging levels. It's honestly hard not to pick these based on music because there aren't really any stage gimmicks outside of Labyrinth having water.

Sonic 2
- Best: Mystic Cave Zone
- Worst: Casino Night Zone
Metropolis, Oil Ocean and Sky Chase (if it counts) are also weak. There's a theme -- in the first two Sonic games, the casino levels stink. The levels are far more distinguishable in Sonic 2, however, and all of the ones that aren't misses (or near misses) are really great.

Sonic 3
- Best: Ice Cap Zone
- Worst: Launch Base Zone
I honestly think that these are a pretty weak set of levels outside of Ice Cap and Carnival Night. Angel Island is just alright; the rest are just too large and cumbersome.

Sonic and Knuckles
- Best: Lava Reef Zone
- Worst: Death Egg Zone
These zones are much better than Sonic 3's, but they're still fairly burdened by their size. I honestly don't know why they decided to make all the levels huge, when Metropolis -- the largest up until Sonic 3 -- was one of the low points of Sonic 2. Regardless, I like Lava Reef, especially its ending.

The music is fine, and Act 1 and 2 are distinct enough in visuals, level design, gimmicks, and so on to not feel at all like a waste of time.
The problem is Act 2 lasts too long. It's pretty much the longest single act in all of classic Sonic. The only thing that comes close is Launch Base Act 2 specifically in JUST Sonic 3 alone, where there's 3 back to back boss fights and the timer isn't frozen during that lengthy cutscene where Sonic takes the Egg Mobile.

Flying Battery I came to realize I detest because it gives you an ice cream and then slams you in the face with a 2x4 while you're taking the first bite.

So the level starts, got this great music thumping; you step into a contraption that sends you flying; you get a loop; you get a weird barrel thing; you're doing break-neck speed and BAM into a fucking wall. Oh, and this platform is going to go down whenever the fuck it feels like it. Lava Reef? Steps. In a Sonic game.

It's a problem I have with S3K. They've got this basic game engine that features acceleration and momentum, yet constantly force the player to push stuff, to use pulleys, handrails and whatever the fuck pic related is, because at one point in the development phase someone went "Hey, wouldn't it be cool...".

What levels I like? In s3k? Beats me. Generally speaking, Aquatic and Chemical are the two I think are best. Why? Because you find your route (yes, there's more than 1, inorite!?), you figure out how to do it fast, get really proud of yourself and the go on YT and watch some fucker halve your time like it's no big deal; noobs get lost and take 4 minutes, good players have a couple of tricks and take 1 minute, pros do it in less than 30 seconds. In S3K, noobs take 6 minutes, good players take 4 minutes and pros take 3:30 and a 1000 (!) time bonus. That you even have time bonus in there is like a third tit in a hot broad when you only got 2 hands.

In essence it's a mixture of "wouldn't it be cool...", flawed design principles and one of the first instances of "I spent time designing it, you can be damn sure I'm going to force you to see it" I know of. It's like arguing Thiaf's levels are better than Thief's because they have better cutscenes or scripted sequences. That's not why I would want to play Thief.

Whatever, I don't really like the whole speedrunning thing in Sonic -- it's lame. I'd rather explore the levels and take my time; the levels are there to be experienced. To me the real reward with Sonic is to play it gracefully, not just fast, and the idea that one route is better than another by some absolute standard such as the number of seconds it took is unfathomable to me.

I agree with some of your criticisms of S3K -- the levels are too long, and some of them don't give the player much of a feeling of freedom of movement. But some of them are really good, and they definitely manage to capture something Sonic 2 just doesn't. Carnival Night Act 1 does multiple routes really well -- you can basically make your own way through the level and play it in style, and sustain a flow state the whole way through.

>Speedrunning is lame
And I'd agree. Except we're not talking about speedrunning a RPG or a visual novel, we're talking about knowing the faster route and being adept at executing it (and mostly for the kicks) in a game that, rewards you (heartily) for doing so, that keeps track of your time and that kills you if you're too slow. Why you'd want to do the opposite in a game with limited jump control and such slow acceleration is beyond me.

And please don't act like I just kicked the baby jesus. You asked me what levels I liked (I assume because I pointed out I didn't like one level you did) and I answered. No skin off my back that you like s3k better than 2.

However...
>explore the levels
In a 20 year old linear platformer?
>levels are there to be experienced
>to play it gracefully
>routes are subjective
>sustain a flow state

Son, are you high?
