Lets get some Toriyama talk happening.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Super Saiya Densetsu. Back when DBZ first aired in Canada I downloaded some japanese roms and forced myself to figure out how to play. For the longest time I didn't even know the stars on the dragonballs represented attack & defense power.

OP here with an exploit for Super Saiya Densetsu that allows for Goku to become extremely overpowered at the start of the game.

You can do this on emulator as well as cartridge as it doesn't rely on savestates.

When fighting Raditz in stage 1, have Goku grapple with Raditz and avoid attacking with Piccolo. Instead push X when selecting characters to attack and it will cut to Goku and Raditz grappling, causing only Goku (not Raditz) to take damage. Repeat until Goku dies (and start over) OR reaches 5hp or below, in which case you can use a Kame card to refill his health and gain him a level up. This can be done many many times during the battle with Raditz, to the point where Goku has a power level surpassing Vegeta.

Here's my super Goku about to 1 shot Vegeta.

It took a while, but I figured out how to play and beat the game after a lot of frustration. It is also the very thing that sparked my DBZ autism.

Use a Piccolo for maximum devastation. Now that I think about it, 18000 sounds right. A level-Z kaioken'd put you at, what, 54000 or so? I just wasn't seeing any ki technique cards in your hand, and BP 20000 isn't Broly enough to beat him to death with just one non-ki card.

There was one on the SNES. It covered DBZ from Raditz to Freeza. You could alter stuff around pretty neatly - have Tenshin, Yamcha, etc. all alive on Namek (I think Piccolo was the only one forced to die), have Ginyu swap bodies with someone and then keep Ginyus body - and then swap bodies with Freeza for lulz. Also you could kill Freeza without going SS, Goku will only transform if someone from your crew dies to him. Also, if you had Goku go SS and Vegita surviving, you got a secret final fight against SS Vegita.

SS Gohan can also be unlocked with a cheat device.

>best dragonball role playing game?
I'll admit, I never played any DB RPG in its enterity, I only played DBZ III which I own as a pirate cart for a Famiclone, I liked it but since it was in japanese, I couldn't advance much, anyway the card system seemed fun, I should play some translated version some time.
>best dragonball fighting game?
Super Butoden 2, no contest.
>fond memories?
All Dragon Ball vidya bring back good memories from my childhood, Super Butoden 2, DBZ Legends, Final Bout (although I always thought it sucks, the intro movie is still awesome), Ultimate Battle 22 (It also sucks, but at the time it had the biggest roster of any DB game), Buu yuu retsuden, and the aforementioned DBZ III. I also vaguely remember emulatin some other DB vidya back in the year 2000, one of the SNES RPGs (Leyend of Saiyans, probably), it seemed really good, and I also emulated the first GBA game, but didn't got past the beginning, never was too fond of playing emulators.
Overall, the one with the best memories for me is Super Butoden 2, I used to rent it all the time when I was a kid in a nearby video store. I remember not knowing who the fuck were all these characters (only Dragon Ball was airing on TV at the time here, I knew about DBZ, but I wasn't familiar with the characters, the fact you can't use Goku in the game unless you enter a cheatcode also made it more confusing for me, and of course it was in Japanese), but that mysterious feel was also awesome, I remember getting a chill down my spine during the Cell cutscene with that music... basically, that game was the first time I experienced the Cell Game, and it was awesome.

I know the game was officially released in france back in the day.
There were also plans to release it in America, under the name "Dragon Ball" (yup, plain and simple), and it was in english, but it was cancelled due to the poor repercution Dragon Ball had in the states back then (the very first DB episodes that got broadcasted, and had the wrong names, Goku was called Zero, and Yamcha Redacki, I believe it was done by Harmony Gold).

As much as I don't like it, "Vegerot" is at least somewhat understandable. It's alright, I mean you are entitled to your opinion but... annoying soundtrack? really? it's in fact one of my favorite soundtracks in any game, even more the arranged versions.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3aGWhuzI8M

Anyway, Hyper Dimension is fine, really good spritework, but as somebody else said, it's just a Street Fighter clone, whereas Super Butoden does its own thing with the split-screen and fast-paced gameplay.

I agree the backgrounds are generic - but Dragon Ball has always had generic green hills backgrounds during fights, it has to represent the Cell Game after all. And anyway it has some iconic locations during the story mode part where you can visit Bulma in the city, Goku's house, etc.

Anyway, I admit nostalgia may be a big factor, but I honestly haven't enjoyed any other 2D DBZ fighting game more than Butoden 2. I tried Super Butoden 1 and 3 and they are nice, but not as good as 2, Ultimate Battle 22 is shit, Legends can't be considered a proper fighting game, it's more like its own thing, and Bu yuu retsuden is good but still not as good as the butoden games. Hyper Butoden as I said is good, but boring because it's just a normal fighting game, where are the amazing air and fast paced battles DBZ is known for? And I haven't tried Shin Butoden for Saturn, I heard the gameplay is actually pretty good, plays just like a Butoden, but has these ugly sprites from Ultimate Battle which is a shame.

Nah, it was because they probably thought they'd confuse american kids if they released it with the title "Dragon Ball Z", back then they were trying to promote Dragon Ball in the US, as I said there was an awful localization handled by Harmony Gold (which changed Goku's name to Zero, among other things), and Ban Dai even released some toys of Goku, Krilin and Yamcha (they actually got the names right for the toys though, probably due to Ban Dai), check the font of the title "Dragon Ball" in pic related, it's the same used in that screenshot in the magazine. But in the end DB didn't take off in the US and I guess Ban Dai cancelled the release of the game.

>> No.1473440

There were two "failed" English dubs of Dragon Ball. The one you mentioned, the 1989 Harmony Gold one (And really isn't all that bad barring the name changes. The voice acting is very good and the scripts, while not accurate, are no worse than what FUNimation was going to do later, lame jokes and all.). Then the second dub was in 1995 by FUNimation and that's where that line of action figures came from (That logo in particular was FUNi's during that era -- interesting that the same logo is used in that supposed English version of Butoden 2). Neither dub got very far. Harmony Gold did a few episodes and dubbed movies 1 and 3 and FUNi dubbed the first 13 episodes and movie 1 before scrapping it for DBZ in 1996, then ultimately went back to it with their in-house cast in 1999 with movie 2 and 3 then finally redoing the whole series from scratch in 2001.
