I've been trying to decide ever since I played both of these on my SNES when I was young (all I had was the All Stars version at the time).

I'd have to say that certain parts of each game do something better. (incoming tl;dr)

Super Mario world has stronger basic gameplay and a very fluid overworld (traveling to older worlds is no problem at all), with tons of secrets along the way. It's graphically superior and has much more memorable boss fights. The skill curve is also less steep, making it more accessible to newcomers not looking for a challenge, but also has very hard bonus levels and endgame levels for gamers that want a challenge.

Super Mario Bros 3 has a very memorable soundtrack with more detailed levels that you will always remember, whether you liked them or not. It also contained some of the most fun to use powers in the entire franchise. The skill curve in this game is much more steep, and is a genuine challenge for gamers of any skill. especially because of the last few worlds.

Overall, both of them are extremely enjoyable games for both very similar and very different reasons. It's absolutely impossible for me to chose a favorite between the two.

This game is shit, plain and simple.

Oh, let's all get the warp whistle and warp to "big world"! Too bad big world isn't fucking fun, like the rest of this game. The entire thing is designed to anger and frustrate you. Oh, you get Kuribo's shoe on one fucking level! Wow, pardon me while I make the universal motion for a handjob. Kuribo's shoe fucking sucked. What did it do, exactly? It let you JUMP ON THINGS, something you were able to do the entire fucking game. Oh, also you looked gay.

There are some interesting power-ups in the game, such as Tanookie Mario, Hammer Mario, and Frog Mario. But guess what? You can get them on like 2 levels total, and if you fuck up and get hit ONCE, you lose them, FOREVER. Wow, that's fun! I love games that demand I play perfectly or have no fun, because I'm a fucking jap who strives for absolute perfection in gaming otherwise I kill myself.

Mario 3 may have been interesting or fun at one time, but the game is a worthless piece of shit in today's day and age. It's horribly flawed and full of punch-in-the-dick moments, much more so than it has moments that are just fun to play.

Super Mario World. I spent so long exploring all the levels and finding all the secrets. Finally completing Star Road felt great. I know it's not as challenging, but when you're riding Yoshi, does that really matter all that much?

Whoever says SMW is easy has never played the water levels (cunt sleeper fish that pursue Mario indefinitely & whom he can't kill unaided — stop for more than a couple seconds, and the half-dozen fish who've been shadowing Mario all close in for the kill), the forest levels, the star-world levels, or the God-forsaken black-screen levels. Or dodged green bubbles and swarms of ghosts in the ghost levels, or played the dungeons. One of the dungeons has a fucking wizard who follows Mario around, can't be killed, and casts spells & shit which Mario can't defend — and if you manage to dodge them, then they take out the blocks lining the floor over molten lava or spikes. Speaking of spikes, ever tried avoiding them falling on you while on a tiny platform, as in SMW? Or avoiding falling spikes while underwater (with Mario's maneuverability slowed considerably)? Didn't think so.

I had more trouble with 21st century Mario games than SMW. You tell me another Mario game that let's you take a fucking cape or blue Yoshi to nearly every level in the game. You tell me a Mario game where you have an ability to bounce off nearly every enemy in the game. ML2 is the Mario game that is easier than SMW and it's not even an actual Mario game by the series standards.

You know what is really missing? Yoshi ereader cards & alternative characters to play as. Having the ereader unlock SMB2 Peach & Toad and Yoshis would have really added a twist to SMB3. Thou I guess they're a little too game breaker-ish. Well, not like a lot of extras are not anyway.

More doesn't mean better. The Racoon and Frog were cool especially the latter. They should have just made all water levels with the frog suit since they're shit with normal mario

>> No.1470284

Wow, I disagree with you on a lot of things. Both games had pretty bad autoscrolling stages. The ones in 3 were actually very obnoxious IMO. The airships are fucking terrible and boring, and the other autoscrolling stages suck. I don't find the game particularly difficult either.

Also do you think "stages are more concise" is a good thing? To me the problem was they were too short which makes them feel gimmicky. They end so abruptly and seem to have little flow or momentum. It makes doing the levels on the world map tedious because it's constantly start/stop.

I do hate auto scrolling so much. They're only good when they're hard and have a shitload of stuff to avoid like in World 8. I even consider theat one stage in SMW, where you ride on the lava, to be auto scrolling even though its techically not. Why do games make you wait, especially if its easy and slow as shit? Thats one thing the original SMB didnt have.

>> No.1470316

I don't think the basic swimming animations would be much of a problem, nor adding a tail, etc to existing pixels. The real issue is having to design complete alternative character sets for suits like the hammer bros & tanooki suits.

>You tell me another Mario game that let's you take a fucking cape or blue Yoshi to nearly every level in the game.
Not true of SMW, moron. (Good luck flying over any World 3 level, or any dungeon for that matter).

>You tell me a Mario game where you have an ability to bounce off nearly every enemy in the game
What an oddly particular point, presented entirely without evidence or citation. Like your previous point, it smells of bullshit, considering SMW has enemies like disk saws, ghosts, snap-dragons, green bubbles, and spike-top cactus segments. It also adds a lot more complexity, which probably confused you: you can jump on the caterpillars without incurring direct damage, but then they become super-aggressive.
