Well, they're technically freelance police, but it feels like a detective game.

Both /vr/ and your pic related, Philip Marlowe: Private Eye is actually rather fun. Based on Raymond Chandler's novel The Little Sister.

Let me add to what this guy's saying that even though the best version of these games for US gamers to play are on the DS, they're remakes of some of the very earliest Japanese detective games and have extremely high retro power levels.

Also, if I had an iOS device I'd be playing Manhattan Requiem since I still don't have a Laseractive.

This. Déjà Vu should've been the first answer. It seems like last year there was a small surge in its popularity on /vr/ but I guess it died off.

The third game especially. It looks like shit but really makes you feel like you're doing detective work (eavesdropping, taking prints, stalking people). Great use of 3D too, you occasionally have to look at objects from multiple angles to find drawers and switches.
Start with the first game, though.

Mikagura Shoujo Tanteidan and Zoku Mikagura Shoujo Tanteidan. It's an adventure game with mechanics kinda similar to the ones in Phoenix Wrights game, you have to find the contradictions and evidence in some characters speech. The game also features some QTE's. It was rereleased on PC on 2003, the game is japanese only, but the PS1 version features furigana for those interested (can be a good learning tool).

I was so disappointed about the Bladerunner PC game. Just for being nice to all the characters, they turn you into a pedophile and you run off with some 12 year old girl at the end as your reploid waifu.

It made me feel sleazy and disgusted at the developer.

Hey, you're the one who chose to do that. You don't have to run off with her; you can go with the whole gang all together.

It's not much of a game in general, although the ZOOM AND ENHANCE tool is fun.

>Manhattan Requiem

Actually, the iOS version of Manhattan Requiem is the same as the DS version, which was also a port from the mobile phone java remake, the only difference is that they used assets with higher res.

Blue Chicago Blues it's in english with japanese subtitles in the iOS version, unlike the japanese console version which were all dubbed in japanese without subtitles.

Any Sherlock Holmes iteration.

you know what's funny? Zojoi (Infinite Ventures back then) wanted to make a Sherlock Holmes game with the help of Kickstarter and nobody fucking cared. They wanted to do something Deja Vu as well. But they figured they'd rather play their ace (which is Shadowgate) straight away out of desperation because nothing would have been possible on kickstarter otherwise.

My nigger of all niggers. The world needs more like you.

I love pretty much everything Chandler ever wrote. The game is very fun and will not dissapoint you.

There also various on NES, that were released in DS as Jake Hunter: Detective Story.

But the NES versions now have english translations, you might look at that too.
