>I wonder if there's actually anything in the empty spaces?
No, the game will fill the empty space with whatever the blank area object is for that area is if you get near it. So if you're in a forest and you noclip near the edge you will just see more trees since that's what the blank area object is for that specific area. Actually walking into the blank space will crash the game though. Although it is possible to traverse these areas without crashing using some crazy glitches.

Part of it has to do with how little you see at one time. You process 15 tiles at a time out of 2000, and combined with your character speed, it seems like a lot more than it is. It's amazing how big even Pokemon Red and Blue feel walking compared to biking/running (in FRLG)

>> No.1466130

Also the fact that you're constantly being stopped by random battles, trainer battles, little obstacles that you have to do a sidequest to pass, the gyms, etc.

Imagine using a cheat code to disable random battles, and bicycling around the world in Pokemon Red. It probably wouldn't even take ten minutes to cover all the ground in the game.

Or to use a non-retro example, Yume Nikki. You could spend hours exploring every little nook and cranny of that game, but once you know where everything is, it can be beaten in about twenty minutes.

When I was a kid I used to play this Korean MMORPG called Kingdom of the Winds; surprisingly quite a few people still play it.

The ending is a cool bonus for when you've found all the effects, but really Yume Nikki and its clones aren't meant to be played with the mindset that you're supposed to "beat" it. You just walk around and look at all the cool weird stuff like it's a virtual museum.

It's probably not stored to look like that in the files.
Basically, when you change route, you're being warped to another area.
So really, there is nothing between the tiles, because stirred in the memory, it doesn't make a coherent map.

Separate. Pic related.

And for Ultima 6, I agree to an extent; I still think it's a lot of fun to wander off and get lost in that game, but I can't see myself exploring every nook and cranny because it was one of the first open world, high interactivity games and compared to everything after it a lot of areas seem boring.

Ultima 7, which is a lot denser in terms of content and has a fuck ton of things you can do and interact with in the game world for no reason, holds up a lot better in my opinion. And the game world is smaller than U6 but still fucking huge, I'm playing that game casually right now, been playing for a couple of weeks and it still feels like there's loads out there I haven't seen and something new around every corner.

Dereth, the land of the MMO Asheron's Call (1998-present). It is a giant land mass on the world Auberean, and populated by many races and species of demihumans who were magically pulled from their own worlds. Each pixel is somewhere around 20 square meters, the game world is said to be 1,300 square kilometers (~500 square miles). It is one large contiguous world, with no zone boundaries or forced gating.

Dereth map upscaled to 2x (and split into 4 images) to allow for annotations. The world is filled with countless towns, caves, dungeons, houses, towers, forts, etc, all with their own little bits of lore scattered about. While NPCs provide tips, rumors, and chatter, they don't generally stand around handing out quests, instead the players are expected to seek them out by exploring the world and its many dungeons.

Fast travel, for those who don't wish to run through the miles of wilderness or along its roads, is accomplished by multiple complex networks of portals scattered around the world. Many towns are connected by "loops" of portals for easier access, though there are multiple loops such that you sometimes have to take a short hike to get on a different circuit. Portals to other places of interest are sometimes hidden atop mountains, inside dungeons, etc. Player magic users can also bind themselves to portals and summon them to allow their party to travel en masse. Portals feature heavily in the lore of the game, as it was out of control portal magic that was responsible for pulling the many varied unique races from their own worlds into Dereth.

The eastern regions of Dereth contain many player settlements dotting the wilderness, non-instanced, where houses, villas, and mansions, once acquired, allow you to mount various trophies and items on your walls and over the doors (with messages inscribed on them) for wanderers to view.

The NPC-run shops in the various towns have dynamic economies, and loot items you sell become purchasable by other players who visit that shop, which benefits lower level players who cluster in the towns near where the higher levels are adventuring, like excited commoners waiting to see what haul the city's heroes have brought back from the dungeon that day. For players who desire more advanced trading, the developers have actually authorized the creation and use of complex scripted unattended tradebots that gather in communal marketplace areas and allow players to buy items from the owners' stocks.

The large southwest portion of the continent is referred to as the Direlands and many different unique styles of geography, as well as the most dangerous varieties of monsters and some of the most difficult dungeons. Many people stepping through their first portal into the Dires meet a quick demise.

The game features a living storyline that changes the world across monthly updates to a degree that puts certain modern MMOs to shame. Past events have involved the abduction and attempted indoctrination of prominent guild leaders, the permanent destruction of the most player-populated city in the game, and an official monument of recognition dedicated to a group of players who actually subverted one month's planned story outcome with sheer determination, grit, and a lot of player killing. Oh, and the seasons change, too.

Amazingly the game is still running today, though unfortunately is quite difficult to pick up and play in today's era due to its massively dated graphics (they were fairly crude even during its initial release), ancient engine, and overall complexity and progression curve.

Some of the overland areas in VII were a bit too cramped for me, notably the initial path from Trinsic to Britain via Paws. Dungeons were too restricted by the mountains

I liked the scale in Ultima IX. There were things to discover off the roads and the towns were well spaced. It's a shame they didn't let you roam as freely as before. The engine was wasted with the needless segregation.

Is there, uh, any way to play Asheron's Call on a private server or something similar? I have a thing for playing MMOs alone.

It's high enough resolution that you could get a nice A3 print done. Wouldn't cost that much

Then you could get it framed.
