Are any of you into console modding?

Done anything interesting recently?

Not my picture, but I'm thinking of modding an N64 I have lying around to output RGB (If I can, I don't know if it's compatible).

>> No.1464804

Most NUS 001 N64s are capable of RGB mods. I hear it looks great! http://atariage.com/forums/topic/222002-yurkies-n64-nes-rgb-mod-service-nesrgb-distributor/ If you don't want to do it yourself am getting done with this guy. Price seems fair to me, just got my tax return so am using it to RGB mod my Nintendos, Scart cables for Genesis, Saturn and maybe PS1, getting the Hanzo VGA box and non /vr/ but getting pot tweak adjustment for my 360. If you have a SNES mini you want RGB restore I know someone who can do that too I can post link for those who want it.

>> No.1464819

I guess I am into it, though just for usefulness purposes, not to do ridiculous stuff or as a service. I've RGB-modded my SNES Mini, N64, and AV Famicom (with NESRGB), and a small mod to my MD to help remove RGB jailbars.

As for N64 RGB, it looks OK I guess. I haven't compared it to composite or S-Video, but I will say after doing the mod I wasn't terribly impressed, in part probably because of the filters that the N64 apparently applies that still leaves some games looking a bit dirty or fuzzy, for lack of better words. I would imagine that it still looks better than any other video output from the system, but I didn't get quite the same "holy shit" feeling I did from RGB-ing my Famicom.

I'm saving up some money to get Gametech to RGB mod my NES. I seen the results on my Component wii which has NES emulator and its pretty good as a preview of the future. I'm really excited for my SNES though, the N64 I've seen photos online looks good but not as WOW like you said as the NES or SNES. I

The NESRGB is definitely worth it, especially since you can still use the default NES palette. It can be fun to look at the different palette options in each game, though. While generally poor, the PC-10 in SMB3 is kinda fun with the lemon-yellow skies in some levels.

If you do decide to get someone to mod it for you, you might also inquire about adding expansion audio support to the NES. This is an absolute must if you plan on playing FDS games, be it with the proper hardware or a flash cart.

S-video mod for my genesis, looks pretty sharp.
Internal VGA mod for my dreamcast, pic related.
I'm currently working on a GBASP backlit screen into a original GBA. I didn't want to order that cable for the easy adaption so i'm going with a ridiculous soldering job. Probably a few hours left on it.

I've been looking for a RGB capable N64 to mod, but I'm still looking into RGB>Component converters, anyone have experience?

I just got the SCART to component minus the audio which I will purchase very soon. When I get my N64 back from the guy, I can post results and what I think about the SCART -> Component. Try the original Black N64s. I've had this N64 since I was a kid.

I have a CSY-2100 which I added a 3.5mm TRS stereo jack to. Works great and I get excellent video quality out of the thing going to either my CRT PVM or into my Yamaha AV Receiver then over to my LCD with HDMI. It honestly was a steal for the $60 I payed for it.

Added a region switch to a model 1 Genesis last night. Only technical. I'm absolutely not interested to make any changes to plastic cases, so i always seem to find a way to avoid it. Like removing that dumb RF modulator from the SNES to make room for a 3 position switch wired as 50hz/auto/60hz . (auto comes from the SuperCIC)

Sorry for the delayed reply. I think there was a thread somewhere that talked about it, but basically the AV Famicom has expansion audio that is way too loud relative to the regular audio. When connecting up expansion audio to the NESRGB you will either connect it with a 47kohm resistor if using the EverDrive or whatever it is called apparently, or something around 95kohm (see here for the specifics: http://www.sega-16.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-22640.html)) if using original Famicom games or Disk System games.

There is a long thread about the NESRGB on the shmups forum (http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=47617)) that covers a lot of stuff about the board, including the information about incorporating expansion audio from the AV Fami into the NESRGB's sound section.

>> No.1467484

>>1467463
I guess I should note that if you just use an EverDrive with stock AV Famicom audio balancing, it might sound just fine. I do know that when using it with an FDS it sounds like ass, with the expansion audio blaring out on top of otherwise normal volume sound.

Thanks for the links! Some of those posters seem a bit autistic about the sound, but there does seem to be a minor balance issue with the AV Famicom. Whenever I get around to doing an NESRGB mod, I'll have to experiment with the audio.

I RGB modded my snes mini, and added a lockout switch. For the genesis i added stereo jacks, s-video out and overclocked it and hooked that up to a switch.

Just recently I replaced some of my 64 joysticks with gamecube style ones, and also put in some custom joystick pcbs to fix the sensitivity issues you otherwise get. If anyone is interested in replacing their 64 joysticks i'd highly recommend this

>which is better? composite or s-video?

SVideo. It has more bandwidth because color (chroma) and brightness (luma) signals are separate and given their own sets of wires.

Composite is aptly named because it's a composite of the two chroma/luma signals on one wire. The signals have to share the bandwidth of that single wire and can induce some interference in each other.

RGB and component run over three wires and have even more video bandwidth than Svideo and cleaner signal separation.

RF not only puts composite video on one wire but also the audio, and on top of that it's very prone to interference because the transmission is at radio frequencies in the first place.

Is it just me or is there no way to line the screen up to the window perfectly? The best I could manage was shifted about half a mm to the left.

I guess this isn't exactly a console mod but I'm modifying a Dreamcast controller to frontlight the VMU screen. For now it's going to be a set brightness but eventually I'm going to add a potentiometer so I can adjust it easily depending on lighting.

This is one of my old projects from maybe a year or two ago. Don't use this one any more because I have a GB Boy Colour (Backlit GBC Clone), and the screen is a lot easier on the eyes.
