I recently picked up a Sega 6-PAK and gave this game a play. I remember liking it as a kid.

Am I wrong in thinking that this game hasn't aged well? Or that it's just bad? Seems like the gameplay revolves around spamming your jumping or charging attacks.

Enemies charge you at a distance constantly and there's no reliable way to get them away from you if you get surrounded.

Streets of Rage is also on the 6-PAK and it's absolutely incredible. Is that just a product of a company having two more years of experience with beat 'em ups by the time it was released?

Were Golden Axe 2 and 3 better?

Am I just playing it wrong?

>> No.1465737

Nah man, this was legit my second favourite game on my old atari st (gauntlet 2 was my fave). The graphics, the locations, the enemies, the music and... I now realise... that super simple gameplay that my 5 year old self could handle.

It has not aged that well, but I still love it, despite it not being that fun compared to good beat-em-ups like SOR2.

Oh and golden axe 2 and 3 aren't better, but I have heard good things about the arcade game.

I played this on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection and didn't find that good at all. Thought the movements were too way stiff.

Golden Axe 3 is one of the best beat'em ups I've ever played.

I don't know what kind of fuck started calling it the black sheep of the series, but most of the reviews you see online keep parroting the same nonsense almost word for word, so I can't help but think it can be traced to the same source. If I ever meet this guy, I'll punch him right in his stupid dick.

>4 characters, 2 of them brand new (one of them is a fucking werepanther guy, how radical is that shit?)
>the amount of options and moves you have in combat is second only to Bare Knuckle 3
>unique 2-player specials and combo magic in co-op
>branching paths and alternate routes
>multiple endings
>some of the best music to ever come out of the Mega Drive soundchip:

It boggles my mind how anybody could conceivably say that GA3 is worse than the previous games in the series. The only reason it's not the pinnacle of the entire franchise is because GA:TRODA exists.

Dude SOR2 is a masterpiece of a game. The sound track alone makes it one of the best games on the system. Also Death Adder is more of the same just looks pretty on that model 3 hardware.

This. I like both 1 and 2, but I enjoyed 3 the most, especially when playing with my uncle (who bought the game to begin with).
When we found out about the co-op attacks and magic we were considerably surprised. It added a lot of enjoyment.
And yeah, dat music. Vast Field and Death Mountain were my favorites.

Non-playable Gilius (or Axe dwarf, as we called him back then) was a bit of a letdown, though.

I didn't really care for GA but SoR games were/are pretty good. My favourite Beat'em Ups, though, are TMNT:tAG, Simpsons, DJ Boy and the very best one ever: RCR (or Street Gangs as I knew it).

Someone in another thread compared a top-down A/A jRPG to the brawler genre, which I liked: Beyond Oasis. Pretty decent game, that.

I like the original Streets of Rage a whole lot too. The soundtrack is similarly masterful.

It's pretty different too. It's a surprisingly deep game, plays great, and you have to play in different ways than other beat 'em ups. There's no 'use it whenever' get off me move so you have to learn to properly use throws and jumping attacks in specific ways.

Won't say it's better than SoR2, but...fuck, it's good. I'd say it goes along with Sonic the Hedgehog as the two best games on the 6-PAK.

Super Hang-On is pretty awesome too.

Considering this came out in '91? Fuck me, it's amazing.

I thought the same when I replayed the game recently. Hadn't played it since the early 90s and remembered it being way better. Give it, and especially 2, another chance. The cool music and conan vibe will sink in and you'll start enjoying it.

I got mine a few years ago from some dude from Singapore or whatever. He had like 15 of them and was selling them for 20$ a pop. Check eBay, he might still be around. Shouldn't be too expensive.

You will need a MegaKey if you want to play it on your Genesis, though.

That's the TMSS you're talking about. If you put GA3 in a Genesis, you'll get an error message (this is programmed into the game, not the console).
Get a Mega Key as >>1465848 said, or search for a Mega Drive.
There's also a region mod you can do, but you'll need to open the system and work a bit.

Buddy, the Sega vs. Nintendo war has been over for more than a decade now. You can stop.

I think most of us can agree that both platforms have their perks. When I want to play Saturday Day Slam Masters with three of my pals, I'm going SNES.

When I wanna play Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, I'm going Genesis.

>> No.1466251

One thing you might not be aware of is that you can press jump and attack and your character will attack behind. Whenever I try to use it though I usually just end up doing my normal attack or jumping. You have to like, press both buttons at exactly the same moment; if you are even a tiny bit off then it won't work, which renders the move pretty much useless since you can't rely on it. Also, for some reason, if you press jump while running then you'll do a super-jump. Half of the game is broken or just bad: enemies walk off cliffs, if you have the high or low ground then you're completely invincible, bosses take way too many hits to kill and at the same time are easily disposed of by repeated use of the charge attack, enemies gradually spawn in which means that you're just going to inch the screen forward so that you only have to deal with them one at a time, lack of variety in enemies, stupid ai, enemies that do nothing until you attack them, enemies from offscreen taking cheap shots. About the only above average thing going for it is the music. And don't bother trying to kill the skeletons that surround Death Bringer -- for some reason these are super-skeletons, which really sucks because they don't look any different than regular skeletons, which means that you're gonna die trying to dispose of them first(and it doesn't help that the boss is cheap as fuck with his magic attacks.) Also half the time the Bizzarians are more hurt than help.

Golden Axe 2 and 3 didn't exactly capture the spirit of the original games (at least in my opinion) and felt more like bare-bone re-skins of the later Streets Of Rage Games

Streets Of Rage on the other hand got progressively better as a lot of people on here cite 2 and the Japanese version of 3 as their favorites.

And while I like the original Streets Of Rage, it was really difficult for me to go back and play it after the fan remake and Bare Knuckle III due to how limited the moves are

golden axe didnt age well at -all-, its clunky and repetitive and a product of its time. i still enjoy it nostalgia-wise however

>> No.1466345

You're right in that it hasn't aged well. The music is still tremendous (Wilderness, such epic) but the game itself, not so much.

Enemy movement s ridiculous. You have the exact same speed and they -always- use the same fucking tactic. One on each side of you but just a TINY bit lower/higher than you so they can hit you and you can't hit them back. So when you correct the height you get instantly hit (since the animation's so simple) and there's fuck all you can do. How they -always- know to avoid the jump, down+B attack, how move priorities are all over the place, how everyone has more range than you, how the enemies just walk into pits, how the one move (B+C) that could be useful against mobs is ludicrously hard to pull off, controls are generally sluggish (GA2 improved on this a lot)... it just forces you to be cheap and repetitive in order to beat it.

But it can afford that. It's an important first step into sidescroller beat em up territory ('89, man, that's a fucklong time ago) and a lot of games I think would owe a lot to it.

As for the sequels, 2 is the one I still play- controls are much better, music is just as good (this is probably the best song in the whole series http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zl9TRTxKLtE)) but it has all the problems of the first one; 3, like >>1465751 points out was really poorly received and is certainly underrated, but it's certainly not great; there was a 1-on-1 fighter in the Saturn I thought was forgettable to the extreme; RoDA I tend to think has the opposite problem of 3 in that it's overrated because it looks tremendous but has that coin-op problem in that it soon becomes butt-clenchingly cheap and hard, but I have limited experience with it; beast rider can fuck right off- the girl might be hot but she's just not Tyris Flare.

On the whole, it's a shame but I thought the whole series could've been a lot better.
