The other day I saw a thread about Sailor Moon games here that made me ponder: what are some good, average and plain bad anime games on retro consoles?

Are they better when they do their own thing (like in Sailor Moon Another Story) or follow the anime's plot, or it just doesn't matter as long as it plays well?

Pic related. They say it's good, but I haven't seen it for myself.

The big rule for retro games for me is that if it plays well, it's good. I guess it's not bad if they also capture the feeling of what they're based on though.

This is a favorite of mine. Really, really solid fighting game on the Super Famicom developed by Natsume.

Eva 64's a pretty weird game. You have a few battles here and there, with most missions being a series of QTEs, more or less. If you're a fan of the anime, it's worth checking out.

The Teyandee/Pizza Cats platformer on the Famicom was pretty good. It's basically Ninja Gaiden Decaf, being made by Tecmo no less. Lots of cutscenes, and overall does a good job of capturing the tone of the source material.

It has an OVA series, but it's irrelevant since this game is a platforming masterpiece while the source material looks like generic ecchi crap.

Yu Yu Hakusho Sunset Fighters for the Genesis. Its really kickass and treasure made it. An easier version of Fatal Fury with awesome background, graphics, and the music. I hear its an awesome party game as well even if you don't know/like the show. Its the prototype of Guardian Heroes and Bleach DS fightan games made by them as well.

Eva 64 is not what I'd call a "good game", but it's not awful either.
The battle missions are kind of similar to the Ultraman game for SNES, except slower and clunkier (which gives it some sort of "realism" I guess, since you're moving a giant robot/thing), you have various commands, and various special attacks you can perform when you throw the enemy away, the outcome of your special attack depends on your synchro ratio (which depends on your performance). It's not that complicated, it can be a bit fun, but ONLY if you like the series, since you can basically fight the angels in the most realistic way possible, it's the only Eva game that lets you do this, because all the other games are date sims, RPGs, or the Smash-clone on PS2 which is interesting, but not realistic at all, it just plays like smash. Eva 64 provides a rather accurate experience of the battles in the series. So, think of it as a way to experience the series interactively, or the closest you will get.
While the controls are weird in most levels, they vary a lot, so it never feels too repetitive.
And the best thing about it are the graphics, it looks stunning for a N64 game, they really got the 3D models right. Once you get the hang of it, it can be fun, I like to smash Eva series in the mission 12.5.

As for games based on anime, I can reccommend Ghost in the Shell for PS1, that game is AWESOME. Even if it wasn't a licensed game, I'd still like it all the same, it's got incredibly good controls and physics, and it's just a lot of fun, great soundtrack too.
Another of my favorites is DBZ Super Butoden 2 on SNES. It's the best of the 2D split-screen DBZ fighting games, great gameplay, pretty fast (you can select a turbo mode), and the soundtrack for this one is also great, one of my favorites. It's even better if you have a friend who knows how to play this.

I had so much fun with this game. The 32-bit era was great for games based on anime. There was also a lot of games that got the "anime" look down so well that you'd swear they were based on a series if you didn't know any better, like Evil Zone and Tail Concerto.

Vampire Hunter D.

An action game using tank controls, pre rendered 2D cameras and some survival horror like puzzle elements.

This game is basically like Onimusha except before Onimusha and on PSX. If you like this sort of game (I'm a HUGE fan of the Onimusha trilogy) don't miss on this one. The only problem is that some puzzle solving can be irritating, at some point I got lost and had no idea where to go, but otherwise it's a really solid game with great atmosphere, solid action and good classic PS1 voice acting.

Not sure if you consider the PS2 "retro" but Oni was a good game. Not really an anime game I guess since it follows it's own story, but it's inspired by Ghost in the Shell.

Too bad Bungie will never make a sequel, but the modding community for it is still active.

No other control type (existing at the time) would have been better considering the camera angles.

I consider the PS2 retro, despite the retarded cut off date bullshit employed here. It's two generations out of date now, how is that not retro by anybodies standards?

>> No.1464167

>>1464098
I believe it's to divide the major generational gap there is on 4chan. While most of /v/ is 17 and experienced their childhood through the early 00s, most people in here spend their childhood in the 90s, Dreamcast was so short-lived, you may as well consider it part of the 5th gen, by the time the GC and PS2 released, DC was dying.

>> No.1464219

>Retro gaming means consoles, computer games ... on platforms launched in 1999 and earlier.

Windows 98 and Mac OS 9 are platforms that qualify, and Oni was on both of them, so it's a /vr/ safe title.

>> No.1464229

>>1464098
The games on the PS2 are the exact same thing as games today, but in lower resolution. How the hell is that retro? Just the other day, actually, I booted up a guilty pleasure PS2 game featuring an animal mascot with boomerangs and was shocked to realize it was released in 2002. It might as well have been released in 2010, as far as the graphics and gameplay go.

>> No.1464246

>>1464219
While I won't call your reasoning on that account very good, I will agree that certain PC/Mac games are retro despite being past the cutoff date.

Consoles are nice and easy since they have distinct generations, with PC, it gets messy as hell. A lot of games can run on Win98. The other idea was to go by engine, but then things get fuzzy when you ask about sourceports and mods made recently for old engines.

>> No.1464538

I always like a decent JRPG, so if they do their own thing with an IP, I'm usually really happy. If it's a kid's game or just shorter, I don't mind if it follows teh sourcec material to a T. If it's a new story within the universe with extra characters and the like (see the Oppositio senshi in SuperS).

Mermanoid is a nice, long one for the PSX (It's about as long as Legend of Legaia)
Galaxy Fraulein Yuna is another good set (even though the kindago back and forth between "OVA based off game" and "game based off OVA")

Slayers for life.

Did I not mention Devilman?

It's a PSX Jap exclusive game. First part is survival horror where all you can do is run, hide, push objects (like SH Shattered Memories except much before), then it turns into 3D beat em up in a 2nd part sadly with not so good hit detection. There is a third part apparently but only if you get a good score at the first two.
