One page newspapers like that get distributed when there's a big event (women's soccer team winning the World Cup, etc), and as advertisements. They're passing them out to promote the movie.

It says:

"Could Chief Arino be at Risk of Retiring?!"

Can't make out the first horizontal text.

"Will he get a game over as he is?"

"Is it okay for him to be visiting the theaters?"

It's just an ad, don't worry about it.

To be honest, it makes me amused or down, bipolar disorder sucks, not angry. I bet a penny that it's our resident troll(s) who spammed past generals with classics like: "Zari-gani (the person who translated most episodes of the show to English) is a cunt.", "JD (check the archives for that one) = PATHETIC FAGGOT", "What is this show about?" and "Arino rapes little boys.". I'm pretty sure the book could count as an autobiography, seeing as it's about a kid named Masamichi (Kibe's name? Masayuki), who live in an affordable living housing complex in Gunma (Kibe's home prefecture) with his younger brother, mother and father (Kibe in a recent episode "We were pretty poor growing up") who wants a Famicom like all his friends, but due to his mother's mistake, ends up "some white console called I've never seen called a Sega".

It feels pretty nostalgic book so far, with a lot of what you see in TamaGe sections (arcades, candy stores, kids swapping games secrets, etc). I can definitely see how he might have written it in response to Kan wanting a nostalgic movie for the Famicom generation.

Sounds interesting. Bit disappointed in that half of the movie is just clips from both challenges of Mighty Bomb Jack.

Then again, it'll probably be a lot more easier for SAGCCX to make a fansub of once the DVD/Blu-Ray is released considering they already subbed the original challenge for the Retro Game Master DVD and released the Live Challenge online.

GCCX is the only show I've watched among all the variety (talk) shows where AD participation is a actual part of the main content. Generally ADs just carry props around and do other menial off-camera labor and only get camera focus when they make mistakes and/or the main cast wants to make fun of them or something.

If you want to compare Japanese ADs to something on American television, Conan and his interns come probably pretty close.

So you have no idea how building an overseas fanbase actually works? Without the subs, there would be fucking nobody overseas that knows about GCCX because of the language barrier. It was only through the efforts of subbing teams that awareness of the show was raised in areas that aren't Japan, which led to the KOTAK releases and eventually the Diskotek DVD release because the team behind the show realized there was now a market for the show overseas.

It's the same reason Retro Game Challenge sold like shit in the USA - there was no market yet in 2009, as it would only start to build in 2011 with the beginning of the SA team's subbing efforts and the KOTAK releases.

If all of this "piracy" was squashed in its infancy, GCCX would still be pretty much entirely unknown outside of Japan, the show would not have been better off in any way and worse off in some ways.

Congratulations, you know Japanese and could already watch and understand GCCX before it started being subbed. Guess what? You're not the majority. THE INTERNET isn't going to magically teach people Japanese. THE INTERNET doesn't just magically breach the language barrier that prevents the vast majority of the overseas market from enjoying content that never ended up localized. Because of that, the knowledge spread about these things is vastly reduced. Translations breach the language barrier and allow for more people to learn and understand foreign things, leading to a larger market for the product involved.

I bought the subbed DVD set. I bought the soundtrack CD. I bought the DS game. I'm planning on importing the second DS game once the translation hits. But sure, keep on projecting about me never supporting the show. Or should I be buying all the Japanese DVD sets I can not understand or even play in order to be a TRUE supporter or something?

"full-fledged fan who will be buying the DVD's" ahaha. There isn't going to be any more DVDs. 90% of all the episodes have now been illegally subtitled and released for free without permission from any of the creators or corporations involved with GCCX. And they are well aware of this. Releasing any DVD's in America would be a complete waste of time and money as most people would simply download them for free. And SA removing them from their site isn't going to matter at that point. The episodes are all over the net and they're going to stay there. So enjoy living in your little fantasy pirate world. Oh, and keep telling yourself I'm wrong. It's cute.

Not that guy but you should seriously calm your tits.

We are not the target audience, not even close. GCCX doesn't do anything to make GCCX for us available, they just simply don't give a shit about us. As a not targeted fanbase, we must live with compromises. Personally, I don't give a shit about pirating and I don't give a shit about the people who do. I'm glad GCCX is translated, I wouldn't have ever watched a single episode if it wasn't. I can't speak japanese because I really don't care about the language, I'd rather learn something useful.

You also pirated episodes, even if it were the raws. There is really no difference. Either you pirate the raw or the translated episode. You're just a filthy pirate like the rest of us. You depended on the kindness of other people to get your GCCX episodes. It doesn't really matter if you imported any DVDs afterwards, stop making yourself feel good by insulting other people and throwing around your standards.

If you're in any form an exception, you're exactly that, an exception, not the rule.

Arino - I really enjoy filming overseas. In both Los Angeles and France, everyone chants "Kacho! Kacho!". I'm never gonna get a promotion now (laughs). I'd at least like to make division manager.

Interviewer - Being famous worldwide, do you think the show can continue for another ten or twenty years?

Arino - I don't think so, but as long as there are games I think we can keep going. It's really up to (Company) President Kan. It's kind of scary, the other day when I was cleaning up, I found the letter he put in the Wii they gave me as a present. It said "In ten years, I expect you to challenge these as retro games, so take care of them." That "ten years later" for the Wii isn't too far off! (laughs).

Kotaku had their own translators and SAGCCX removed their own versions since those episodes were officially licensed by Kotaku and they would've been (even more) illegal. Don't think they had subbed all of them at that point though, I only remember Solomon's Key, Mystery of Atlantis and Clock Tower for certain.

Discotek Media licensed the KOTAK episodes afterwards and got zari-gani as their translator which led to the western DVD.

Regardless, the episodes that got pulled down were because of Kotaku's licensing long before the DVD was even a concept.

fuck the shiren the wanderer episodes, took me about 2 weeks to watch them, I don't know what it is about those 2 episodes, but everytime I watched them they put me to sleep, or at least part 2.

I remember I passed out multiple times over the course of a week each night. I would always start the episode where I last remember. One time I checked from where I began last and the last scene I remember before passing out and only 6~ minutes passed.

Two things:

- Kibe's book is selling so well that it got a second printing, which is pretty rare for first time novelists.

- Another interesting quote from the movie program from the interview with Kan:
"One of big reasons we wanted to do a movie was so we could take it overseas. I think that if we can give the opportunity for a lot of people to see it at film festivals and the like, it'll be connected to our next big development."

The big thing people seem to forget is that you're trying to get into show business and learn how to direct your own show and what the ADs are doing are internships. Hense why they called assistant Directors. They just happen to work for Game Center CX, as opposed to any other shows that are part of the same internship program.

This is why ADs 'graduate' because they complete their course work for the program they're apart of.

Ok, following up on the things I was saying at >>1459136 and >>1459102.

I was asking if someone wanted to translate TokiMemo to it's own language(Like german if you're german). That's because I timed the whole episode myself. There's a catch though. I timed to translate it to PT-BR. And I did some small changes so if you want to understand and fully translate everything, there are some parts you might need to use google translate.

Of course, I could always put it in english to help you, but it's a whooping 1704 lines (without translating the dates and locations of the game how SA-GCCX translated). Of course, a pretty big part of it is things like screen text like the phone that repeats itself all the time, but it's still a lot of lines, at least 1400.

So if you have the will to translate all that, go right ahead: https://mega.co.nz/#!OYdFXJaL!NGmdqup_pA0zg8gQRRBU6ICQUFUuzhuI4JkrqzYD1r8

Kan being in frequent touch with the person that's pretty much responsible for fansubbing 100+ episodes of his show makes an interesting situation. You'd think because of the connection that more effort to sell SA's subs would be made, but he's well aware of her subbing and that the fans of the show here already have 100+ subs and wouldn't bother. I know there was that attempt to get them on streaming services too, but I'd personally buy any new official sub's they'd sell me, for video quality reasons mainly. I just always hoped that her working for them meant good things for more US activity, don't look that way lately...

Eh, even the Japanese only get one DVD per year so time will tell how it goes. KOTAK originally purchased the licenses to the bunch we see on the western DVD and they're probably not going to do more considering how poorly they handled it so it's up to Discotek or some other company to spend their money. It's not exactly a risk-free investment since the concept of the show is never going to work as well in the West as it does in the console-crazy Japan.

As an outsider it's pretty difficult to say how much effort or money is or isn't put into things at the moment as well.

Yeah, the Tom Sawyer one wasn't exactly classic gold. SMW was a good one, although you might end up despairing in the face of Arino's incompetence. My personal favorite for a new guy is Go By Train! (or Densha De Go!, depending on which title is used, that seems to vary). It's got Japanese quirkyness, an interesting game and staff interaction, which are all great things to have in a challenge. If you want tension up the ass and an epic challenge, I'd instead recommend the Mighty Bomb Jack trilogy, although you'd have to look around a bit more to find the DVD cuts, or maybe the Lemmings trilogy if you don't want to look around.

No, you don't lose ALL your levels. They all go back down to whichever level the lowest stat of the 3 is at. So if you have Life-8 Magic-4 Attack-5 and get game over they would all go back down to 4 since that was the lowest level you had.

That still sucks. Has Arino ever played an overseas version of a game for a challenge before?

I actually think the VN ADV episodes are great, especially the mystery ones.

Check out the sweet business card they're giving out at Kibe's book signing on the 30th.

Just watched the Budokan special. God, that was awesome, I could feel the hype right through my TV. Even Kan seemed excited at some points, I can't even try to understand how awesome it should've been being there in person. And the Kacho Fighter song was perfect to finish it.

Is it just me that thinks Nakayama would make a great singer? Watanabe on the other hand, her voice was so different from the studio version.

I just finished watching the Paris trip episode. Seeing how much people liked him over there was awesome.

Wired editor says that the new 3DS game is bad:

>I just wanted to let you know that Game Center CX 3 for the Nintendo 3DS is very bad.

>If you have no idea what Game Center CX is, then you were in no danger of buying this Japan-only Nintendo 3DS game anyway. But in case you’re still reading, it’s a famous Japanese television program about a comedian named Shinya Arino who plays classic videogames, mostly badly.

>It has spawned a series of videogames, the first of which was released in the U.S. under the name Retro Game Challenge. And it was pretty awesome: You played a series of games that were newly created, but designed to look and feel exactly like the retro games of the past. Shooters, platformers, even a retro RPG. The whole experience was trimmed with callbacks to the 80′s — each game had classic box art and a manual that you could read through, and you got more information about the new games by reading classic game magazines that hid tricks and tips.

>As good as the first game was, the sequel was even better, with much more varied game types: It parodied Jordan Mechner’s Karateka, introduced a text adventure, and the RPG design was modeled after the Game Boy Color. It was one of the most brilliant games on the platform, and so of course even though every crappy shovelware piece of lazy trash from here to eternity was released on the Nintendo DS in America, nobody ever brought Game Center CX 2 out of Japan.

>Five years later, the third game in the series finally emerges. The original developer indieszero has kept itself quite busy in the meantime, producing the music game Theatrhythm Final Fantasy for Square Enix and NES Remix for Nintendo, but it didn’t do this game. Instead, Bandai Namco contracted shooter developer G.rev to handle it, and it sure did made a dog’s breakfast of it.

>Superficially, it looks like they nailed all the elements: Eight retro-styled games across a variety of genres. But the humor, the attention to detail, the passion of the two previous games is completely gone. There’s no heart in any of these games, none of the tangible love for the classics that popped out of every pixel in the last ones. They’re not charming parodies, they’re just by-the-numbers games with pixel art.

>The level design is bland and haphazard, the controls janky and unresponsive. The missions that you’re given for each game are unimaginative, but insofar as nothing really happens in any of these games anyway, maybe there was no way an imaginative mission structure was possible anyway. The role-playing game doesn’t feel like an NES game or a Game Boy game or anything identifiable, other than feeling like a crappo feature phone game. The only thing Game Center CX 3 will make you nostalgic for is the N-Gage.

>In fact, the mission designs often go beyond “unimaginative” into “hellish,” forcing you to replay long, boring stretches of these craptastic games over and over. Thankfully, the developers must have taken pity on people who actually had to play this game and dropped in numerous opportunities for you to just skip over annoying sections after you’ve tried them a few times.

>I kept playing in the hopes the games would get better. They got worse. Significantly worse. It went from a passable Mario Bros. clone to a boring platformer to a hateful Pong variant.

>All of the adoring, intricately detailed wrappers, the box art and manuals and magazines, are gone. In their place is an ugly small town made up of buildings that you can tap on to watch your character talk to other characters and get hints, tips and new games.

>You cannot use the buttons to navigate, so you have to keep pulling the touch pen out and putting it back. Also, you can’t check the goal you’re supposed to be pursuing while you’re playing the game. Many, many bad design decisions like this pile up to make it an experience of infinite microfrustrations.

>While I was complaining about this game on Twitter, a follower alerted me to the fact that someone is close to finishing a fan translation of the unreleased, fantastic Game Center CX 2. So if you’re thinking about importing this 3DS game — don’t. Buy the second game instead and jump through whatever hoops you have to to get it into English, if you don’t read Japanese (seriously — there’s a text adventure).

>And we’ll just pretend this one doesn’t exist.

About GCCX3.

G.rev was formed from Taito's arcade shump unit, the guys almost never did home work and did not any home stuff until the PS1 era (home ports were done by other units or were outsourced to other companies like NEC Avenue), during the 8 & 16 bit gens, most of Taito's non-port games for home systems like their Hanna Barbera games were outsourced to companies like Natsume & Sting and sold other companies games like Little Samson, with G.rev they only know how to make shumps, other types of games, G.rev may or may not have any idea how to make.

As for hardware, Taito's made for NES games/not-ports was not up to snuff to the likes of Capcom's & Konami's made for NES games/not-ports on the NES in the 80s and their 90s efforts were either other companies games (Little Samson) or were made by other companies (Power Blade 1 & 2), and since the unit of Taito that became G.rev only did arcade hardware at that time, they were lost when they were told to work on NES hardware and have said games running on a emulator, even with the MMC5 chip doing most of the effort & the Namco 163 chip used for music cutting off the MMC5's sound bus, G.rev was lost and only made 1 or 2 games with the NES hardware (the one I do know that uses NES hardware uses the MMC1 chip, I don't know about the Mario Bros clone G.rev did, it's mostly stays to NES standers, but may be to color and might of been made with PC-Engine hardware), up scaled of course, most of the games were made with Super Grafx hardware (close to NES hardware, but with less limits like more colors, faster, lager banks (512KB vs the NES' 32KB) and that extra PPU the SGX has, Namco could of also redid the Namco163 chip to fit the PC Engine's standers like running in stereo, the shump thats in GCCX3 uses this hardware) but some games use the Super NES' hardware (the RPG in GCCX3, I don't know if it uses the SA-1 or either SuperFX chips, but it uses one of them).

If GCCX4 is ever made, please use a company that has used NES hardware all the time in it's hay day like Comcept, Inti Creates (Ex-Capcom, when MM9 & 10 had post emulator effects, they know NES hardware & need to give the MMC5 chip more love), Good Feel, Treasure (Ex-Konami, we need some MSX efforts, especially using the MSX Turbo-R, GFX9000 & MoonSound, but at lease they know how to make NES games) & M2, they know hot to make retro console games, G.rev really only did arcade shumps.

And it's it a NintendoXBandaiNamco effort, give it to HAL Labs or Intelligent Systems, they know what to do, they worked with the NES, HAL even did a MMC5 game (no, it's not Kirby, thats a MMC3 game).

There was an April Fool sub of the first hour and a subbed wrap up of the live special in Bonk's Adventure right after it happened. The sa-gccx page for Bonk says it but you'd have no way of knowing from their list.

There's more detail on the subbing in here.
