Discuss: Levels that gave you PTSD. I'll start with Castlevania 64 - Castle Center.

Fuck everything about carrying that god damn nitro. It may not have been difficult to pass the obstacles, but carrying that shit made me super stressed out, even when walking through the gears.

Yeah, and fuck those guys too! I thought skeletons on motorcycles was going to be extremely silly, but jesus christ, they're the scariest enemies in the game right next to texas chainsaw massacre.

They should've called this game Pitfall: The Castlevania Adventure. So many stressful leaps of faith on the first level.

This was the last regular level i got 100 points in. All because of this fucking part right here. It's slow autoscrolling with no checkpoints even at that point. You have to get on the rock to reach the door. The rock drops in from above and is fast. Since the screen doesn't move with you, it's very easy to get pushed of the rock by it should you actually manage to get on it. Mess up and it's back to the beginning of the level.

I still remember falling through the fake floor and landing in the jail cell with the tentacle horror for the first time.

This was the only real difficult part of the whole run because they were at the very end and they could move unpredictably. Usually I'd just run past and try to keep a column between myself and them. Actually trying to fight them, especially as Reinhardt, is too risky.

The game itself deserves more praise. No other Castlevania game will fill you with as much dread as CV64 did with the hedge maze and magical nitro.

I've never beaten this game without passwords. Between the constant stress of the air meter, Ecco's manic screams, the crabs that jump out of nowhere and that fucking octopus, this game just stresses me out too much.

>> No.1458117

Perfect Dark. The goddamn Attack Ship on perfect agent, an endless source of tears. Absolutely no way to recover health and no shields. Scare ammo. Predator aliens that won't die. Elvis failing the mission because I accidentally shot his huge goddamn head. That final wave of reinforcements at the last objective. All at ~15 FPS, with a half-broken analog stick. But I did it, and it only cost me my sanity.

The hedge maze was also fucked up. Going through that on consecutive tries is stressful, but going in there the first time is so unnerving. Especially if you didn't have prior knowledge of Frankenstein's chainsaw monster. Chasing Malus around in there sucked too.

>> No.1458206

>>1458163
Even worse in Legacy of Darkness. Henry follows you instead of you following Malus, and Henry actually has a lifebar which means he can (and very likely will in your first run) die.

Ghosts n goblins, level 2 (and every level thereafter). Fuck that horrible hit/collision detection and inability to look/fire upwards or diagonally.

Honestly, if you consider the first "ending" to be a level, then throw that in there as well.

Oh, and the "bad" endings to Mystery Quest and Bubble Bobble. Shit the bed over those.

Tomb Raider 2. Fucking moray eels.

>> No.1458785

In the first tomb raider game, that fucking t-rex coming out of the darkness fucking startled me every damn time and still does.
I knew it would come out when you reached a certain spot, so I would ease forward step-by-step trying to get it to come out and be prepared. It still makes me jump and gasp every damn time, maybe I'm just really nervous.
It's the same with all those Tomb raider games whenever you're in silence and suddenly you hear a roar or something. Startles the shit out of me, maybe it's just the atmosphere of the game.

It's not even a real choice. You either have a piece of shit melee ranged whip or long ranged, infinite homing magic. It's like using axes or crosses without actually aiming.

The skedar planet level is worse. I've been playing the XBLA port nowadays so it's 60 fps, but it's still challenging. It's mostly because you don't have enough ammo. Every enemy takes so many shots to kill that even if you don't waste a single bullet, you're out of pistol ammo after maybe 4 or 5 enemies. After that you have to use the shitty Reaper for awhile. It's also a really long level. And of course the dark parts are annoying

Ninja Gaiden - Stage 6-1, 6-2- 6-3. To this day, I don't know why Tecmo thought it was a good idea to send you back over to 6-3 if you die in any of the boss fights, of which you have three in a row

Q: Ninja Ryuukenden 1 is (in)famous for its extreme difficulty. Especially after losing against the last boss, and having to start at the beginning of the whole chapter, a lot of gamers were faced with despair. At that time, was it your conscious aim to create such a hard game?

A: Mr. Yoshizawa directed the action part for the first game, but that was actually something a programmer had implemented this way accidentally. However, it wasn't tried to fix it. They were like "hey, that's not bad, either". *laughs*

The boss phases stay dead after you beat them. Each of them also has a special weapon weakness that takes no skill to exploit. Additionally 6-1 and 6-2 are two minute autopilot levels after managing to beat 6-3.
