A sundowner (folk etymology from Spanish zonda, 'Foehn wind') is an offshore northerly Foehn wind in Santa Barbara, California. It occurs when a region of high pressure is directly north of the area, the coast of which trends east–west. This contrasts with the more typical onshore flow. The winds blow with greatest force when the pressure gradient is perpendicular to the axis of the Santa Ynez Mountains, which rise directly behind Santa Barbara. These winds often precede Santa Ana events by a day or two, as it is normal for high-pressure areas to migrate east, causing the pressure gradients to shift to the northeast.

i would like the option to force you to start with only a pistol every level. id's philosophy was that every level should be able to be beaten with a pistol start since that's all you respawn with.

>> No.1451974

You shouldn't...enforce pistol start though. You do it if you die, sure. It's a punishment. But you get to keep all your gear if you beat the level.

Don't want to respawn with all your shit? Turn off auto saves.

The only time not pistol starting would ever be a problem is on a poorly designed megawad or community project that didn't think shit through, eg putting a BFG at the end of one level so the next level you're way oberpowered

It's pretty much all 16 bit sounds for Blaz, each character will have a theme for sounds, music, and a HUD

Blaz is SNES/Arcade
Kuros will be NES
and Samson will be Sega Genesis

Reward for successfully completing the previous map. There are plenty of Doom 2 levels that I wouldn't dream of going in with a pistol start for; they're insane.

>>1451987
> you're handicapping yourself by going into a map fully loaded on ammo, guns, armor, and health buffs.

I don't think that's true. I think instead, a pistol start is more difficult than if you have your previous equipment.

If pistol start should be enforced, why is there always, in just about any "map design for dummies" guide, a tip to throw a stimpack or something in the first room of any given map? The only reason that stuff would be there would be if the player finished the last level with sub-100% health. If you enforce pistol start, they'd have 100% health. The game doesn't refill your health between levels, so you're intended to continue on.

Every level in Super Mario Bros. is possible to beat without being Super Mario or having a Fire Flower; however, when you beat the previous level, you retain whatever powerups you had at the end. If you die, you lose those powerups and have to start the level over. How is this concept not identical to the concept of pistol start?

You want fast monsters? Open the console and put in "sv_fastmonsters 1" and you now have fastmonsters.

>>1452613
> Oh well, I guess I just won't use a monster randomizer.

Look up Scaliano's R667 Shuffle.
But more importantly, don't be such a whiny faggot. FKER has weapons? Remove them! It takes five minutes in SLADE.

If it's a WAD, find all the weapon sprites and delete them. Open up the DECORATE file, delete any actors that relate to the weapons. (They'll be named stuff like "FKER_Shotgun" ideally.)

If it's a PK3, even better! All you need to do is delete the weapons in the "actors" folder and the weapon sprites in the "sprites" folder (which will probably have a "weapons" subfolder).

Learn to do these things. The Doom community appreciates people who at least understand what they're fucking doing; if you want to do something, it's better to do it yourself.

But you know what, fuck it, you fag, I'll just post my own old monster randomizer.

It's understandable to not know what 16-bit refers to when you're not familiar with the arbitrary colloquialisms of the retro community:

The Super Nintendo's audio processing unit is 8-bit, like the NES, yet has 16-bit depth digital audio output. Now the system has a 16-bit CPU but you or the other anon were referring to the sound. People don't refer to bit-depth when they say 8-bit in the context of chiptunes, they refer to the 8-bit processor of the system. However the Super Nintendo brings up a problem, the CPU is 16-bit but the audio processing unit in charge of music and sounds is 8-bit.

of course it's more difficult, but when a mapper TESTS a map, they do it with a pistol start. you're going in with a head start on equipment. now that's fine if you need it, but some of us don't want a head start.

>If pistol start should be enforced, why is there always, in just about any "map design for dummies" guide, a tip to throw a stimpack or something in the first room of any given map?

sure, but the mapper spends far more time creating a gradual acquisition of weapons and armor to accommodate those starting with only a pistol. a player also has the option of saving whenever they want, so most will probably never bother with a pistol start. those players are missing out on how the mapper designed the map to be played, and i'm guessing you're one of them.

>Every level in Super Mario Bros. is possible to beat without being Super Mario or having a Fire Flower; however, when you beat the previous level, you retain whatever powerups you had at the end. How is this concept not identical to the concept of pistol start?

similar concept, different game. i just think the whole idea of the pistol start is flawed since you're allowed to carry your equipment over and SAVE whenever you want. do you actually not use saves, and take it like a man when you lose all your shit? i doubt it. death would feel a lot less punishing if every map, you didn't have shit to begin with, and the game would be more rewarding as a result. i can't believe zdoom defaults to fucking autosave at the beginning of every level. I REPEAT, YOU ARE MISSING OUT, FELLOW DOOMERS.

>What are you looking to get done with this Sprite Offsets program

What am I looking to get done? How about how I wouldn't get done! Do you have any idea about how many people will thank whoever does that? SLADE is a fine-ass program as of now (and the beta, while unstable as fuck, it promises to be the next big thing), but the offset utility in it is complete ass. A more handy offset program wouldn't hurt at all

The same goes with that one program Donald was developing which basically was a handy, idiot-proof, monster DECORATE helper program, he posted an early alpha of it a long time ago. I wonder if he kept working on it

Someone in Doomworld developed a texture lump dumping program too, it read whatever map name you specified, and it delivered a full text list containing the textures used inside that map; I didn't had any idea I would've ended up using that program a few months ago for a small project.

Excuse me for what I'm about to say, but I personally find that thing trivial at best, ZDL does the job for me already, and what would be the point of having an iTunes-like program for Doom if you're going to end up playing the same things with little to no changes? It's like those people who have the entire arcade MAME collection but they play nothing but Metal Slug

Yeah that'd be pretty good

You mean the program would look at the offset for the sprite in one frame, and the offset in another, and create a new frame between them with offsets that put it between the two points?

If you handle your offsets in Textures and keep your weapon sprites in /patches and just use the Textures sprites you can create new sprites with new offsets without duplicating images, that's what I do and it's great. I'm not suggesting you do this instead of strive for the program you've described, just a thought.

Also to note that there's self damage because of the green cloud.

Made it feel gimmicky and useless.
I also don't touch the Super Shotgun but that's because the regular shotgun is now so reliable and has the same damage potential thanks to the pellet change.

The fastest pistol speed puts it at 4 tics, same as chaingun's constant speed. Chaingun also has a higher damage which brought it to a DPS about 9 higher than the pistol which is useful for sustained fire into crowds / hordes

>> No.1454001

>>1453997
It's only a little stronger? My bad.

9 DPS is pretty underwhelming when the old chaingun was double the DPS of the original pistol.

And dat burst fire.

Pistol is more accurate too.
If you want to do accurate shooting with the chaingun for whatever reason you have to wait longer between shots.
Even moreso because it's not a single tap for two 100% accurate shots.

Getting a chaingun didn't really impress me, but I dig the sounds and screenshake.
Same for the Plasma rifle. It even made the Doom 3 pew pew sound effect not sound like shit.

Whoops, I just found out that despite shooting 60 rays over 4 tics, I had the damage setting at 4, compared to the default 15. I upped the damage setting to 12.
Also, radiation cloud will no longer deal damage.

While the Shotgun has a accuracy boost and deals slightly more damage, the SSG still wins in the damage-per-shell department. Its extra damage is more close-range oriented though, as the additional pellets have a limited range. I may change that though.

>>1453997

Exactly that. Another thing is that with the Alt-fire on, not only is the wind-up and wind-down time removed, the first-shot pinpoint accuracy is still easily achievable. The pistol, on the other hand, is not pinpoint on first shot; however, it still is very accurate on the first shot and when holding down the fire button.

I did not notice this.

Personally I prefer shotguns with range either way.
I didn't feel that the super shotgun was weaker, but I like the regular shotgun more.

>Also, radiation cloud will no longer deal damage.
I feel that the BFG shouldn't do self damage because it's made to be a close range weapon.
I view it as an upgraded Super Shotgun rather than a long range explosion weapon.

I never played Doom when it was originally out because I'm too young, but a good friend of mine and I got the game on the Xbox 360 arcade when it came out a while ago and played the shit out of it as well as Doom II. I love the graphics and I think it easily competes with games today in terms of fun, and even aside from the gameplay I think it looks cool and the enemies are really interesting. The pixelly graphics can somehow make the game creepier as well. Been making our way through Doom 64 recently.

But I feel the average modern gamer is looking for really high end graphics. I'm not sure though, there are still tons of people I know whom love old games with outdated graphics and lots of old gamers who miss them.

That and it's -got- to have a bullshit multiplayer with EXP and unlocks and all that gay shit, because it's more important to have a game everyone will clamor over just long enough for them to buy DLC and get ready for the next release.

Deimos is really fucking small. Like, far too small for the levels to actually fit on it, but thats another issue.

A moon this small would have next to no gravity, so the gravity is either generated by the UAC facilities through science or, since you're within rappelling distance of hell, it's just hell's gravity. Either way you could definitely walk to the edge and find that "down" isn't pulling towards the center of the moon.

i'd love it if people kept on moving forward with the gameplay of old school shooters without making it OMG SO RETRO

earth defence force and cave shooters are good examples of what i'm talking about. they continue the old school gameplay without being self consciously retro- taking the old school game mechanics and taking them to their logical conclusion, and not just throwing a bunch of retro signifiers together and expecting that to take the place of a good game

there's no reason to remake doom, but if you can make something cool that continues the 2.5d fps tradition go ahead. if its good im sure someone will play it

Doom on a Wii is fucking awful. Your aiming and turning are not separate with the Wiimote. You try to adjust your aim slightly, and you're spinning all over the place. You can use a Gamecube controller, but only if you walk the whole time. Running is hardcoded out.

I was very disappointed when I tried to introduce my little bro to Doom this way.

To elaborate on the aiming difficulty: imagine if your mouse had to be perfectly centered on your mouse pad to stand still. Your character constantly turns at a speed proportionate to your mouse's distance from the center of the mouse pad. Say you need to aim at something slightly to the right - with normal controls, you just nudge the mouse to the right a bit and leave it there, and you're on target, but in this case, you have to nudge the mouse to the right and IMMEDIATELY pull it back to the center of the mousepad, or your character will keep spinning clockwise indefinitely. That's what Doom on a Wiimote is like.

That's the idea, it's a magic ballistics weapon strapped to this guy's wrist, which fires etheral slugs and mega buster shots for a primary, and various etheral rockets and bombs for a secondary.

Basically I'm just going to give the ruby wand a fresh coat of paint, remove a few spells, and make new projectiles, just making it beefier in general to match Blaz, plus it'd probably encourage players to use it more

That being said the new Doom is going to suck, it's in Zenimax's hands and all of the good people left id years ago. we can only pray they don't give it the same treatment Devil May Cry, Thief, and Metroid got.

Ya, this is what I meant. Monster closets everywhere didn't happen THAT much in the originals (a lot of the time they were just corner-monsters) but I feel a lot of people will bitch about it. As long as it doesn't get Doom 3 levels of "spawn things behind you" it's gonna be fine.
And I kinda liked the new Thief. Custom difficulty a best.
