Hey /vr/, I love retro racing games. Particularly arcade games like Daytona USA and such. What are some of your favorite racing games, whether they be obscure/popular arcadey, realistic, futuristic, goofy, kart racers, or whatever else we can talk about.
Let's give this thread a good, ROLLING STAAAAAAAAAAAAAART!!!

Diddy Kong Racing all day.

Gotta love that hub world, those solid kart racing mechanics, and at the time it was amazing aesthetically and grafix wise for its time. The variety of cart, planes, and boats took it a step above the other cart racers of its time.

My friends and I had many hours of enjoyment with that game.

Op again, looking good so far. Anyway, might as well bring up pic related since it was going to be the original op image until I decided to create a racing general altogether. It's a pretty interesting racing game for the ps1 that reminded me of initial d since you can drive a trueno like in the show/manga. Seemed pretty fun but for it to have its own thread seemed unnecessary.

Do yourself a favour
Boot up that SSF emulator and play Sega Rally
It's a very small racing game 3 tracks + 2 cars (discarding the hidden stage and stratos) however the stages are carefully constructed and mastering them requires a lot of practice
Don't just dismiss it on your first try, it takes a while to get used to it, but it's very rewarding when you manage to control the dirt slides

And you say you like the daytona usa music? Same composer, the great takenobu mitsuyoshi, also from shenmue fame.

I've recently discovered the Touge Max series for PS1 and apparently Saturn, though I can't find any info on Saturn releases.

The second game seems best since it has a ton of Japanese cars from the mid to late 80s all the way up to when the game was released.

There's an emphasis on drifting but I'm kind of terrible at the game currently. Seems pretty cool, though.

I bought TOCA 2 again recently, remembering it from my childhood and I was really impressed. The handling is pretty darn good, and the oversteer physics are way ahead of contemporary sims like GT2 (this is coming from a massive GT fan). The cockpit views and ability to glance left and right (including working mirrors) are fantastic. The only problem the game has is that when you start a touring car race from the back with a full grid, there is a bit of slowdown away from the line until the number of cars on screen reduces a little. Slowdown isn't an issue at any point other than the start of some races, though.

Another thing that really impressed me about TOCA2 is that if you enter the cheat codes for the hidden tracks and cars, there are fucking loads of them, including a great country road around a loch in Scotland where I had great fun driving the Grinall Scorpion. There's as much non-touring car content as there is the licensed stuff - it's crazy. I recommend TOCA2 to anyone who likes old racing sims

It looks great, yeah, but you'll need some serious nostalgia to enjoy that piece of trash. Possibly one of the most soulless and boring cart racers ever made, and it doesn't even have music in multiplayer mode. In single race or whatever, highlight the track you want and press circle for the JM1 track. For example, pressing circle on Nebulous will change it to Nightmare.

I think the increase in turning is just slower. Not delayed. Technically speaking. But ya, it gets down to the same effect.
I found out by accident, that playing it on MAME I can modify that turning speed on the ROM's options. Making it control as easy like the 3DS/GBA-pack versions.

Not that guy, but it doesn't. Genesis version's music is inferior to the Arcade's. But GBA is even worse than Genesis.
Hard Road for instance, is so butchered that it's melody practically isn't there.
Super Hang-On is inside SEGA Arcade Gallery 4-pack for GBA, if you want to check it yourself.

One very positive aspect about GBA is that visuals are much more fluid compared to the Genesis. But the sprites were scaled down.

All that above makes the Arcade and 3DS versions the best ones. And maybe the PSN/XBLA(?) too, but I never test those myself.

Can't really comment on the Saturn version as I haven't played it. I'd imagine that it came out toward the end of the Saturn's life seeing as how that'd probably have been around '98-'00 or so. I used to play the arcade games all the time while I was in Japan. Particularly Version 4 and 5. The PS2 ports play a lot like the arcade versions (i.e. not really like a real car whatsoever, but still fun).

A couple Saturn games that I'd really love to get my hands on are "Touge: The Spirits" 1 and 2. The first one was released under the name "High Velocity Mountain Racing Challenge" in North America. Touge The Spirits 2 expanded a lot on the original, and should be a deeper game than the first. I really like games that have me doing the same thing I enjoy doing for recreation in real life. It gives me a safe place to do it when I can't because of money problems. ;_;

They hold up very well. Shutokou Battle 01/ Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3 was my favorite of the series. In that one, you weren't just running the Tokyo Shutokou, but also Nagoya and the Kansai Hanshin expressways. Unfortunately, no Honda license, so no Hondas. The ladt of the series that actually was a true Shutokou Battle game (not the mobile phone card game) was Shutokou Battle X/Import Tuner Challenge. It unfortunately seemed more like it was about street ricing than street racing, unfortunately.

California Speed for the N64 is actually a pretty fun game, mostly for how ridiculous it is. The tracks have you race on rollercoasters, through a volcano, through a giant computer, and on top of the San Fransisco bridge (on top of the bridge, not on it, as in you're driving on the red parts hanging above the bridge's sides).

Each car has a few different color sliders, so you can make any of the cars into just about any color you want, which is something you don't see in many racing games from back then (or even today, as far as I know).

My favorite car is the golf cart, because it's hilarious that it is given the speed and acceleration needed to pass sports cars. And also because it fills the role of super-fast-car-that-controls-like-shit and for this kind of game that just adds to the fun.

The game is by no means technically impressive, but it's the kind of game that's a lot of fun even if it isn't actually too well designed, if that makes any sense.

I always thought it would be cool to have a thread where people play Gran Turismo 1. It's so fun starting out and actually having to race and save up to buy parts for your first car. And then satisfying to finally buy a better one and start tuning it to compete in a different series. The more recent installments have really missed that feeling of starting out small and working your way up as funds permit, and the sense of attachment you get to the cars as a result. There's a lot to discuss, I think. License test techniques for gold awards, lap times, car setups, the cars themselves..

I could totally play again if a few of you fellows fancy it

I loved MSR. One of my favorite things to do was wander the empty streets on free roam hen I finished the game. They made the environments as photo realistic as they could (at least until licensing became an issue, then they had to change it up a bit). I have a demo of the game from ODCM, which had a beta version on it. It hass everything unchanged the way it was back in 98' or so (Kool cigarette ads, Coca-Cola, et cetera). It's really something to see.

I loved being able to just wander around the environments and see the small shit like the Pepsi logo on a shop's storefront that they forgot to edit out in Pacific Heights, San Fransisco.

The soundtrack was also awesome, I had the thing on my Zune until it took a shit. It was nice being able to listen to things like "Club Paris" "Heartland" "Live Your Life" and "Passion" in the comfort of my Miata.

That game changed a lot before it was ever finally released, I remember it having Hondas in it in the Beta versions as well. Seems like earlier it was supposed to be more of a street racing game than it was, with wild paintjobs and more "Boy Racer" kinda stuff in it. It's a damn shame the Japanese never got it.

Truly excellent game.

In terms of 'brand advertising' games though, Viper Racing was my favourite

Viper Racing. Man, that takes me back.
Anyone else remember that fan site where you could download beer-related skins for Viper Racing: ViproAngelo's?

I found the flash intro to their site in my old backups:

Also the time limits in this game seem...very unfair.

Let's just say that I haven't heard particularly favorable things about it.

And the PS2 version, while having absolutely drool worthy graphics, is very shoddy in the controls department

It also made it to the Sega CD. I have a copy, but it need to go into a disc scratch doctor.

>>1463114
It was definitely fun, but in my opinion, just wasn't deep enough. Needed some real-world tracks and more western cars. The PC version expanded on it a bit, but I haven't played it. The Carrozzeria was pretty cool I liked the idea of being able to make my own cars. The physics seemed like the facory-spec cars were a bit floatier than in real life. Also, if you knew nothing about cars and just through parts at it without any real tuning (hard racing stabilizer bars, anyone?), you could easily make your car undrivable.

But yeah; it is a great game, I just wouldn't put it ahead of the Grand Turismo series. I also loved the later iterations on the XBOX (Sega GT 2002 and Sega GT Online) which greatly improved on the real-world feel of the cars, but not necessarily where tuning was concerned (Max camber =/=max traction in all circumstances; tuning is a balancing act as anyone who'd set up a racecar can testify to).

I did love the amount of tuning in Sega GT, but you really had to know what you were doing (as in on a real car) to make the most out of your settings, and even then, it wasn't really close enough to real life...but this was way before Forza and better sims were available.

I have both Saturn and 32X, but I haven't played them very in-depth. I will say that the flat-shaded polygons of the Saturn seemed to make the game faster and smoother (framerate) than most other Saturn racers.

<A bit of a departure from the norm, but a pretty solid racer. Over quickly for 100% completion, but so are most Saturn games. A shame Sega didn't use this graphics engine for the Xtreme project.

I always preferred the PS1 version. It felt like an entirely new game and not just Hot Pursuit with new cars and tracks. Sure, you don't get as much content, but the overall product feels a lot more polished.

Also the car models on PS1 were WAY better looking. The 911 and Camaro especially looked awful on PC.

Kaido Battle, it was sold here as Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Drift.

The Shutokou Battle games were also old as "Tokyo Highway Battle" (PSX), "Highway 2000" (Sega Saturn)

You can also import the older games, the series goes all the way back to the Super Famicom (Shutokou Battle'94)
