Go into setup.

IWADs are core Doom files like DOOM, DOOM2, HERETIC, HEXEN
PWAD are mods like TSP, MSX, Scythe, Unloved and anything custom made by the community.
Source ports are like Doomsday, ZDoom, GZDoom

Just match these names to the categories I listed

It's worth setting up because after the first time it's very easy to just pick what you want to play.

Okay, first open ZDL.
Then look for the options menu.

Then put the IWADS I listed to where I said to put them.

Then put your source ports(Doomsday, ZDoom, GZDoom) where it asks for it.

Then that's it. You're done.

Load PWADs when you want them to.

No, I'm referring to the processing exclusively. I have plenty of source material. The issue is getting it to have a similar timbre. Just downsampling to 11025 8-bit isn't good enough, there's more to it. A certain flavour of distortion, a compressor, all sorts of things.

Like constant -26db noise, possibly a tiny bit of aliasing folding under the nyquist (it's hard to tell since it's mostly the noisy ones that have enough high-frequencies to cause it and it's masked by all the noise).

I'm thinking that some go through a heavy compressor, then they all get overdriven a bit, some get clipped, but the character of these elements is elusive.

If I knew anything about the equipment I could look up its specs and mimic it, or perhaps locate a software emulation.

The switch was really easy to do and now I got all the weapons in place.

Didn't know the crossbow used the rocket launcher pickup sprite though, that's the only funky thing about it.

Replaced Bullet boxes with AK47 ammo pickups since it doesn't share revolver ammo.
Will probably replace small cell packs with spikes too.

Replaced the Super shotgun with the Crossbow since I wasn't a fan of the Autoshotgun mechanics + reloading at all

Other than that it works like a charm, thanks again mate.

Basically it covers the entire life of id software up until, roughly, the release of Quake 3 and shortly up to the leadup to Doom 3, although it primarily focuses on the time period between 1993 (when they were developing Doom) to 1996 (when Quake 1 came out).

There's a few short chapters about their days at Softdisk, and then working on Commander Keen and Wolfenstein 3D, and then it jumps headlong into the development process of Doom.

It's not a technical bible or anything--it's a narrative. So it's more about what these guys were doing and what their lives were like at that time. If I were to compare it to a movie, it's that kind of biopic-"based on a true story" movie like The Social Network was.

If all you care about is the game, you might not give a shit, but Doom is VERY much a product of the personalities who made it--because, unlike modern games, there were maybe six guys who made the entire game. (The two Johns, Adrian Carmack, Kevin Cloud, Sandy Peterson, and Bobby Prince, if I'm not wrong.)

The later chapters talk primarily about Romero leaving, the development of Daikatana vs. Quake 3, and so forth. These aren't as Doom-focused as the early chapters (obviously) but like I said, the book is really about how Romero and Carmack were best friends and then suddenly they fucking weren't anymore.

It's a pretty short read (about 200 pages; I read it over the course of a few lunch breaks at work on my phone) but it's a good one. You can find the pdf in ten seconds with Google.

I think it was a question of Romero not being as useful to the company as he was supposed to be. He wasn't focused; the fame and money probably went to his head a little bit. I mean, just look at what happened with Ion Storm.

Now neither of them work for the company they founded. Carmack is doing, well, Oculus Rift, and Romero is doing iPhone games (with Tom Hall, incidentally). They both seem to be doing well enough for themselves.

Maybe one day after Doom 4 comes out, and they see how bad it is, they'll get back together and do one more game. With four other dudes in a lakehouse.

I felt really stupid at the time, around two and a half years ago when I discovered them, and went on a spree raiding the doomworld archives.

To date I've played a fraction of what I downloaded and I downloaded maybe half or two thirds at best of the contents on the site that I determined(through a mix of the ratings, the comments, and my personal hunches)were worth checking out.

All of Doom 1's monsters attack in a linear fashion.

Doom 2 brings up Revenants, Mancubi and Archviles.

I'm trying to think of other things to make the wand more appealing to people, I don't want to nerf the damage of the sword because that would be gay. So I've been very steadily toning the range down of a lot of the sword attacks and subweapons, the lance will stay long range, but the dagger is going to get a slight range nerf.

The hatchet I'll leave alone as well because it arcs and that's fun

I have a talent for expanding out rooms with ideas--it's getting the rooms down in the first place that's always a problem.

Don't make square rooms. Maybe make them square when you first build them, and leave a few in for variety, but large or important rooms should have weird, unique shapes.

Use nukage a little more than you think you should. Every techbase should have a little nukage. Barrels too.

Don't just throw monsters at the player and call it challenge. Evaluate what weapons the player will have at this point, and what difficulty monsters you should throw at him and expect him to survive. If you just gave him a rocket launcher, Hellknights or Revenants are a great opponent.

I played NOVA when it was still in alpha and some levels weren't that much detailed or balanced out. There was this nasty map entry in the middle of the wad which broke the pace completely but in the final release it got moved out to a more decent place (MAP24). It's worth the try, honestly; custom music, different skies, you name it.

Now, Doom 2 In Name Only is an interesting project. You often see those silly threads in /v/ where they criticize a game for not being extremely literate (i.e. "you don't craft stars in Starcraft" and shit like that). Since the purpose of the project is to create maps based on the name of the original Doom 2 maps, then you will be *really* playing in Catacombs, or Waste Tunnels, for example.

It is still being worked on (it's in Beta status) but man, some of the entries are really good. The secret maps are really something you might want to "idclev" to check 'em out, I won't spoil why.

The downside of this is that you potentially waste ammo if you reload too soon. Bullet-based is probably what you're familiar with, your ammo is in a "pool" and reloading just means you fill your mag up without discarding any bullets currently in the mag. This is pretty unrealistic but it's what I personally feel people have come to expect.

I think my first exposure to doom was through a version I downloaded of it modified to replace all the enemies with simpsons characters. The Krusty the Clown lost souls scared me. At some point I ended up beating both Doom 1 and Doom 2... I just can't remember what on or when, after that I didn't really touch doom again for awhile.

I remember getting the full version disks from friend of my sister's. It was pretty painful since it was running on a 386SX (the SX stands for sucks).

Didn't really have the ability to really get into it until the 486DX/2 came around. Then yeah, it was awesome, smooth framerates, playing on Too Young To Die with cheats and had fun, picked up Doom II retail, played it keyboard only, good times. Eventually I decided to try playing on harder difficulties, having gone through the levels already really helped a lot. Still never did a Nightmare run, though.

Only really played a few WADs from those hilarious compilation collections, none of those megawads or whatnot. Later I stuck Doom95 on a Pentium machine and loaded up Doom II once in awhile.

How about you turn it into a kind of invisible wall like what I see some reflector weapons/items use and have it set to slam enemies that touch it?

To give an example, one of the weapons in Russian Overkill has a shield mode that lets you put up a shield.

Or you could instead set up the tackle to set out a shockwave type of deal(Think Deflection Discs) at the end of a tackle to launch things and have a point blank hit in front of you that just deals huge damage.

Fuckin tell me about it. I'm kinda tempted to remove some of blaz's spells and save them for the mage, Blaz can have the explodey punchy spells.

The problem is if I do this, I want to replace the ruby wand/staff with a gauntlet mounted shooter that morphs into a mega buster thing. It'd still shoot orbs and spikeballs and all that, just look beefier to suit blaz.

I got no one to make sprites for that though.

Here's what I'm thinking: take the gravity swirl and lightning spells out, save them for the mage. Get rid of the chakram because it's too situational. Give Blaz a new look for his secondary weapon, and a new utility function for the unpowered version, the force wave can go to the mage as well, he's gonna be fragile anyways so shoving shit back would be ideal for him.

There's still the matter of fucking with item drops though, I'll need to learn how to adjust them accordingly depending on what character you're playing as. Also from the looks of things, this is how it's gonna work, and I hope it's possible:

Blaz: Most subweapons, few spells
Kuros: equal number of subweapons and support items
Samson (mage): few subweapons, most spells.

Samson will be the one I give the wild spells to, shit like heat-seekers, big fuck-off beams, a BFG tier attack is gonna get in there somewhere too.

If I have half or even most of a magazine left, I wouldn't chuck the thing unless there was an emergency, but even then, I'd go back to pick it up, no sense in wasting magazines, I mean, what if I find ammo later, but I don't have a magazine to put it in? That'll leave me with a clunky single-shot weapon and that's less than ideal.

I figure refilling empty/half filled magazines is something Doomguy would be doing between levels, or idly, when there's no monsters around.
Say he ducks in to a room, to switch the magazine in his gun, or switch to another weapon, he picks up a health-kit, and look, there's a paper-box of cartridges on that counter, lets fill up that magazine and put any remaining rounds in your pocket or backpack. Press down rounds into the mag, tap it against a wall a bit and then toss it in the pack.
