I didn't even like the 2D water stages. Except in Super Mario Bros 3 when you had the frog, then you could fucking dash through them.

I remember when he wore the correct red overalls/blue shirt combo and was pleasantly plump before Nintendo went PC on his ass. His main squeeze was named Toadstool, which makes sense since she ruled the MUSHROOM Kingdom. People who support the Peach name obviously do because they come from the Fruit Kingdom.

>> No.1437379

>>1437318
I thought everyone accepted her name as Peach Toadstool?

As for the blue overalls, I guess it makes more sense because jeans overalls are pretty common, but eh.

>> No.1437387

The one thing I've never understood about the Peach/Toadstool thing is why they only bothered fixing Peach and not King Koopa. I get it, you change Toadstool back to Peach for consistency with the Japanese version, but why keep Koopa as Bowser? Hell, people were already familiar with calling him Koopa what with the cartoons and the movie, anyway, so it would've been an even easier thing to change. Not that I mind any name, I just thought it was kind that they fixed one name but not the other.

>> No.1437412

>>1437387

yeah i specifically remember "king koopa" in super mario world

what is the reasoning behind "bowser" anyway? what does bowser mean?

>> No.1437414

>>1437412
"King Koopa" was trademarked by a small toy company ("Koopa" itself wasn't) and NOA couldn't legally use the name. The company is defunct and the trademark has lapsed, but it's too late now. They don't want to pull a Sega with their Eggman/Robotnik bullshit either, that's just embarrasing.

Paper Mario is awesome, I'm playing through it again right now. My favorite partners are Goombario (because I am addicted to Tattle) and Bombette (because so much damage).
Also this might just be me but I like how low the damage/HP scale is in this game. Like, every other RPG has that scale into the stratosphere just to look impressive or some shit, but here the damage stays in the single digits for a good long time. It's strangely refreshing.

I always only played with Bombette in Paper Mario. I think she was my first waifu.

>> No.1438480

Not really nostalgia, but since we're on the subject of Mario nomenclature, apparently Kamek is the Japanese word for Magikoopa. Which means that the individual magikoopa named Kamek only has a unique name in the West. In Japan he has the same name-species deal as Toad and Yoshi.

Just thought that was kinda interesting, and doesn't seem too well known.

>>1437432
Paper Mario is fucking amazing. Watt was always my favorite partner when I was a kid because of the defense pierce. I tend to focus on using a different partner or two every play through though, so I've grown to like all of them a lot. Except Kooper, nigger needs to learn how to attack enemies that fly.

Isn't that the case in the DiC cartoons?

I always thought the fact that the grunts kept Koopa in their name when their leader didn't was kind of odd.

They probably intended to keep Bowser's name as Koopa and named the Koopa Troopas knowing that, but then they found out they had to change Bowser's name because of what >>1437414 said, but then they didn't think to change the name of the Koopa Troopas because they just didn't care or something.

Luigi was the mysterious one. Mario was always there, but but when Mario couldn't handle the job, Luigi was right there hiding in the shadows until you needed him. Personally, I like that explanation more than "he's a coward".

When you file for a trademark, it's for a type of product. Presumably, video games were at the time considered under the "toys" classification of the time.

It's also where there's a maker of kitchen equipment named "Optimus". They aren't selling toys, so they have no conflict with the robot action figure of the same name.
