It would be awesome if someone could assemble a complete retro FPS package. Every few years I pull out my Quake, Doom and Duke Nukem CDs and then waste time getting everything running, installing engines, trying custom maps, etc. Would be nice to have everything in a single download, maybe even with the best custom mods and content added.

Here is what I am thinking:

Package 1 – 20-30 or of the best FPS games, everything setup for portable use and configured using the best engines.

Package 2 – All the best mods and additional content for the vanilla Package 1.

Would anyone be interested in this?

Also which games would you include?

Wolfenstein 3D
Doom, Doom II, Final Doom
Duke Nukem 3D
Blood
Quake, Quake II
Unreal
Half Life

...but everyone knew that.

Yes I'd be interested, OP. Quite an ambitious project though.

Yes I'd be interested, OP. Quite an ambitious project though in regard to the mods. Some of that stuff can be tricky... like Blood mods for instance with DOSBox. Finicky stuff with the conf files, BMOUSE.exe, etc. If you actually do manage to pull this off I'd be impressed.

Just make this one CD
Wolfenstein 3d
Blake Stone Planet Strike
Blake Stone Aliens of Gold
Rise of the Triad
Doom
Doom 2
Heretic Shadow of the Serpent Riders
Hexen + Deathkings
Chex Quest
Strife
Duke Nukem 3d
Shadow Warrior
Blood
Star Wars Dark Forces

Then another disc could be
Quake
Quake 2
Unreal
Half-Life + Opfor and blueshift
Hexen 2
Dark Forces 2

Someone, in the doom thread, a while back made a "Retro First Person Shooter Compilation"

There's no mods added but it's got a nice amount of FPS games.

When this was made, the point was to compile as many different first person shooters ("perspective" was probably more appropriate) together into one package, without quality assurance.

These are, despite the efforts put into creating it, not all worth playing.

I also regret a lot of the decisions I had made in this, as I was not too familiar with the content I was dealing with, and really need to start updating and filling in the flaws I had created.

For one, I had bundled incomplete ports (JonoF's Shadow Warrior Port), I had bundled extremely outdated ports for some games due to misunderstandings (The Elder Scrolls, Rise of the Triad, et cetera), I had forgotten many official add-ons (Namely Doom Master Levels, probably more), I had neglected to include unofficial modifications that were largely considered beneficial (bmouse for Blood to name one), I believe I had even included a demo of a freeware game, and included games that I couldn't get working myself (fucking Assassin 2015)(but don't expect me to fix that).

I might soon get around to adding more games (although I believe I may have even said this multiple times within the past year), and fixing many other mistakes, while also striving to make all the games run by opening up a simple shortcut. In hindsight, this would have just been easier than writing out directions for each one.

Expect an update, but don't expect a date, and if you do make that mistake, expect it to be late.

Best is very subjective. Unless you include multiple options, this is a poor idea. At the very least a purist option and a graphicsfag option for each game.

Oh, and include the original DOS executables in all cases. I've downloaded shitty releases of Shadow Warrior and Duke3D that had ports ONLY and that didn't do me any good when I wanted to play them on my DOS machine, did it? Not to mention the SW ports were useless and wouldn't even play the game properly. I'm not sure if it was the pack done by this "Megafaggot" chap or not, but not providing the original game executables would make one live up to such a name.

>>1432136
Best is subjective, so the most popular ports were included instead.

>>1432149
I was aiming for modern convenience on the Windows 7 platform (for the most part), and low memory footprint whenever possible (ports usually work more efficiently than emulation through DOSBox). Most of the games are the original DOS executables, as most games had not had their sourcecode released, but this excludes some of the most popular games. You cannot please everyone, that much is clear. I encourage you to create your own torrent providing these files, or alternatively to alter my torrent to your own specifications and even upload it if you were all too inclined, as I have no intentions to include various ways to run each game on multiple platforms.

The memory footprint of dosbox isn't awful. The CPU requirement however is. You're looking at 550MB for the most part. Even machines from 1998 could net you that. But you do need a fairly powerful modern CPU to play the high end mid-late 90s titles well.

Please do this. I haven't played many FPSs and would love to join the genre in such a convenient way. I also trust that the /vr/ troopers in this thread have good taste and will pick quality gems, both popular and obscure.

Thanks for the info on the torrent.

I'd grab the essentials off 3DSL and compile a torrent myself, but my upload speed is capped at 70kbs and I'm sure no one wants to deal with that. Plus it's already easy enough to grab everything off 3DSL anyway.

You shouldn't.

I used the word 'port' very loosely. I just meant the installer hosted on The Elder Scrolls official website. I had bundled an extremely outdated version of this installer.
