Found a 5 screw Gyromite today, and decided to make a famicom converter.

Ghetto rigging general?

>> No.1424673

Is there any way to do this with SMS and Genesis?

Or do you NEED the converter? Isn't the converter mostly just for the Hu Cards?

>> No.1424686

>>1424673
Whoa slow down there you're asking a lot of questions at once.

SMS and Mark 3 are compatible but require a converter

Mega Drive and Genesis are directly interchangeable except for cart shape and some games are region locked. Game Genie works great for that

HUcards are region locked. You could get an adapter but a PC-Engine won't cost much more than the adapter.

HuCards are for Turbografx, what you're thinking of are simply called "Sega cards" or "MyCards" in some instances. Though sega card was more common.

And the converter mushroom thing for the model 1 that you're probably thinking of is indeed just a pass through device if wikipedia is correct.

>As the cartridge slot is of a different shape, Sega released the Power Base Converter, a separate device that sits between a Master System cartridge and the Mega Drive's cartridge slot. The Power Base Converter does not contain any Master System components, instead functioning as a pass-through device, and consisting almost entirely of passive circuitry. The converter contains a top slot for cartridge-based games along with a front slot for card-based games, as well as the 3-D glasses adapter. When a Master System game is inserted, the system puts the Z80 in control, leaving the Mega Drive's main 68000 processor idle.

>>1424686
idk what this mark 3 thing is, cant comment there.
The bit on the MD/Genesis is correct though. Some of the later games are region locked though the software, but there are actually game genie codes you can use to get around this (lel).

The Hucards bit is also correct, but [probably] unrelated to what he was actually talking about.
though it usually holds up for the genesis/master system converter as well. The only converters I've seen have been about $60, which is what master systems go for.

On an related note, check out this auction.

No, it clearly has a shell. While it looks like it would fit into a Genesis based on the picture it would be foolish to say an obscure version of a 3rd party device would do something it doesn't claim to without more information.

While I'm not really one to talk since I did exactly this, Wouldn't it be much easier and cheaper to do what he's already done, modify your NES for expansion sound, and import games as necessary?

The only real advantages you get from a Famicom are the use of NSF player cartridges and the the add-ons, which are expensive as fuck and mostly useless anyway with the exception of the FDS, and mine failed after just a month.

My TV doesn't tune to 95 and I don't want to put a VCR on my entertainment center wasting space. I already have 8 systems.

>> No.1429319

>>1428683
Okay.... Let me really spell this out for you... The only difference in a "Master System to Mega Drive" adapter and a"Master System to Genesis" adapter is the shape of the cartridge shell. The PCB design, pin licationsetc are all exactly the same so you plug it into a Genesis the same way you plug it into a Mega Drive, in the cartridge slot. To make it fit you can do any number of extremely simple things:
>Remove the PCB from the shell completely and just plug the naked PCB in
>Cut away the plastic on the cartridge shell that keeps it from fitting in the slot
>Cut away the plastic on the slot that keeps the cartridge from fitting
>Swap shells with a worthless Genesis game and cut a hole in the top for the master system slot to stick out of
>Use a riser like a Mega Drive to Genesis adapter or a Game Genie
Do you understand how simple this is yet?

The hassle is actually finding one for sale.

>> No.1429446

>>1429319
You don't have to spell anything out for me. You seem intent on arguing a point that no one is arguing. Let me spell it out for you.
Some guy speculated that an adapter that said it was for a mega drive might not not work on a Genesis and asked for advice.
I told him most like it do but couldn't comment on that particular one as I hadn't use it.
You decided to claim that it would even though you never used one before and didn't know whether that device actually worked or was even a real thing. When called on that you went into aspie mode and tried to argue about something no one was arguing about.

If you've used that device before and can say from experience it works then come out and say so. If not, stop the elitist lectures about adapters I was building while you were in diapers and go share your autim with someone else.

You're theone who doesn't know what the fuck you're talking about. Go ahead and post some pics of your home made master system to mega drive adapter and then go ahead and explain to us how it would be possible to build one that would be region locked or why anyone would want to do such a thing.

This is AN ADAPTER. It has no software, no bios, no nothing. None of them do, it would be beyond retarded for them to but whatever. The fewer people who want to buy them the cheaper they'll be. I feel no obligation to convince people to listen to good advice.

there' no region locking on the console itself, only on some carts. If it's for the pal market it will probably work in any region.

The only issue would be if it's made for a Japanese console, in which case you may need to modify the port of your genesis to get it to fit, or plug it into a game genie.
