I suppose it won't hurt to make a general thread about ROM hacks. Any game, any system. What ROM hacks would you guys recommend? As usual, I'd like to make a list.

The previous lists:

>http://pastebin.com/J7sFtMFx (Platformer list)
>http://pastebin.com/fxcGw7k1 (Shmup list)
>http://pastebin.com/rzwErk3k (Puzzle list)
>http://pastebin.com/FT6L91uU (Beat'em Up list)
>http://pastebin.com/E6BFXFiC (Fighter list)

Super Mario World or Sonic the Hedgehog hacks are also OK.

Rockman 4 Minus Infinity, for starters.

I think Mega Man 3 has the best hacks:
Ever, Return, Claw 3, The Battle of Gamma

All of the above are favorites of mine for various reasons. Despite being rather vanilla they all have excellent level designs especially the first two.

I started playing Mario Adventure and it's great. New powerups, completely rehauled graphics, there's even a day/night cycle (that's annoying at times, I hate when it snows, but overall it's really impressive).

There was one that turned Gen2 into a winterized version, as well as added several new Pokemon. To my memory, there's also a Gen2 hack where they incorporated the physical/special split from Gen4.

Pokemon doesn't have many cool hacks, most are usually "prank" hacks to make, say, Gen1 into Black and White, only for the video to be conveniently uploaded on April 1st and the hacker doing other, boring shit. A level hack of Gen2 where the enemies are considerably tougher would probably be the best hack ever, I wonder if there are any tools for Gen2 trainer+Pokemon editing. For example, imagine if the Rocket Grunts taught their Raticates moves like Shadow Ball.

I'm playing Rockman 4 Minus Infinity right now, and it's really cool. I really like the fact that's it's playing with usual Mega Man conventions. Robot Master battles with multiple phases? Boss with around 30 life bars? You betcha.

Never played Mario Adventure, but it looks interesting. I'm hoping to see more Mario hacks in this thread, especially good SMW ones. I'd love to see a good SMW hack without shitty "kaizo levels" or heavy use of ASM to hide the gameplay shortcomings.

>>1299459
Strangely enough, there aren't many ROM hacks of the first two gens, mostly fan translations and some minor graphical hacks. The third gen, on the other hand, is completely different story. Folks at /vp/ may help you out.

Anyone remember Pokemon Quartz or Pokemon Chaos Black? Looking back at them, they sure look laughable.

Great contributions so far! Keep'em coming!

In NES games, and pretty much ever console before 2000, requires you to swim through THOUSANDS of hexadecimal values before you find the right one. In modern games, since their programming language as actually readable to anyone, you can just look at "load.char.pallet" and guess it's supposed to load NPC graphics that appear in Pallet town. In older games, not so much. You might find one byte that tells the game to load graphics, then in some obtuse area, there's the second byte that tells the first byte what to load, and the third byte, located in RAM, tells the other two where put those sprites.

Why is Prof. Oak there? Was he a leftover graphic from the game's earlier builds?

Well as you probably know, Mario 64 works on a need-to-render basis. Which means certain things don't render until Mario is in the vicinity. Enemies may either be frozen or non-existant if mario isn't there. Coins won't be there either.

Thing is, there can only be one guy that the game renders for. So Luigi won't cause enemies or coins to appear; it's all based on where mario is. Also, enemies won't target Luigi.

Also there's the camera to consider. The way the camera works in the hack is it centers around the point directly between Mario and Luigi. However, either player can "steal" the camera by holding 'R'.

So back to the rendering thing. Red coins and Stars are immune to the rule; they render at all times. This is so they can be seen from a distance by a searching player. It also works to our advantage. Because of this mechanic, Luigi can collect them even if Mario is off somewhere else.

Now we come to the star collecting mechanic. When a player grabs a star, the star counter immediately increases by one, and the player loses control and Mario falls to the ground, does the dance, and the level exits. HOWEVER, Luigi is not locked during this time. He has time to grab things, INCLUDING ANOTHER STAR. In this way, 2 stars can be collected in one go. Including the 100 coin star, 3 stars can be collected.

Back to rendering.
Some levels are very large and have "segments" that get rendered when Mario enters the room. Hazy Maze Cave is one of these. What this means is that if Mario bails on Luigi, Luigi is left in the dark. The collision on the walls still runs, so he's left running in the dark; the wall textures don't render. Sometimes star graphics won't run either, but you can still grab them.

Well, we got all the red coins in that one room, so I had my friend wait directly under the star while I hunted around for 100 coins and another star. I went all over the place, down into the loch ness monster room, up in that boulder rolling room, etc

Here are some ROM hacks I've played and enjoyed.
>Pokémon
>Pokemon Pikachu Edition
- Based on 2nd Gen. Moderately increased difficulty. Dialogue and plot is exactly the same. Copious map changes however (can be annoying since everything is moved/out of sequence and you have to go through Dark Cave at the beginning of the game without Flash). Great if you loved G/S/C. Or Yellow.
>Pokemon Team Rocket Edition
- Based on 1st Gen. High difficulty. Completely new plot, dialogue, map locations, everything. Highly recommended.
>Sonic
Sonic 1 Megamix
- (Version 3.0 NOT any version after. Yes there are a ton of bugs but the changes in 4.0 are abysmal. Think Sonic Advance 2 vs. 3)
- Great balance of speed and challenge. I used to play this everyday like it was goddam heroin.
>S3&K Master Edition 2
- It's the Kaizo version of Sonic. I never got past Hydrocity 2. Great if you have a youtube channel.
>Final Fantasy
>FFVI Last Hope
- The guy who made this wiped every copy off the face of the Internet and asked the one guy who did a full walkthrough LP to take it down. But I still have a copy.
- Moderate difficulty, same story but with some in-game text and sprite changes. Its the best FF6 hack for anyone looking to replay the original but with an added (but fair) challenge.
>FFVII NES
- Someone was working on an English-translation patch last time I checked. This is an incredible abomination that deserves a lot more credit than it's gotten. But I still haven't played it.

That's all I can think of. Most of these can be found with a fair amount of Google and a sprinkle of archive.org

Is it wrong that I actually like it more than SMB: The Lost Levels? I'm huge Mario fan (I even love New Super Bros. series, despite them being aesthetically bankrupt) and I always felt like The Lost Levels, while pretty decent game on its own, is a bad Mario game. It feels a bit amateurish.

Bump, I guess.

So, I've been thinking about what to do with the list and I've decided to do thematic updates. The first update will focus on Super Mario Bros. hacks. I currently have (copied straight from the list):

- Extra Mario Bros. [http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/369]
- JUN Mario [http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1552/]
- Lady Opera in: SWF Panic [http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/467/]
- Luigi and the Christmas Quest [http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1546/]
- Super Mario Bros. Special X1 for NES [http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1011/]
- Super Mario Evolution (True) [http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/188/]
- Super Mario Unlimited [http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/875/]
- Vs. Air Man [http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1589/]

Is there anything I'm missing? I'm looking for non-kaizo hacks that offer good level design or crazy gimmicks. Or preferably both at the same time. I've noticed that Japanesee SMB hacks usually fit the bill, but they are rather tough to find.

The next update will focus on more Mario games, mostly SMB3 and SMW ones, but if you know any other Mario-related hacks, (like Super Mario Kart or Yoshi's Island for example) then feel free to share.

I hope I didn't miss any good SMB hacks, I tried to list the hacks that can be enjoyed without abusing save states (Reign of Koopa, Super Mario Unlimited, Jun Super Mario Bros.), hacks that look cool (Funny Princess, Super Mario Evolution, or Paper Sai) and hacks that take the original game and turn its gameplay upside-down (Extra Mario Bros. and Switch; I really recommend giving these two a try.)

There's one hack I really wanted to list but I couldn't find it anywhere:

Does anyone have it?

Any opinions on the list's structure are welcome.

ALTTP - Time of day (simple hack, but kinda neat)
ALTTP - Parallel Worlds
SMW - Return to Dinosaur Land (just a level hack. Good fun, but some of the exits are a little too hidden)

I tried it, but it's just too far above my skill level. I couldn't even beat the first level with save states.

Now, what I did decipher from the first level is that, unlike the other hack which sacrifices branching paths to create longer levels, this one retains its branching paths, but, they're balls-to-the-wall hard. I was at a jump, with a save state, trying to make it for fifteen minutes before I just gave up. You have to wait for an enemy to come from behind you, pogo jump towards it after it left the platform, hit it with the right distance put between you and the platform you left from without getting hit by it (which will kill you), then bounce off it to a falling platform. I couldn't get to that platform, and if the easiest level is like that, I just don't feel I can feasibly beat that game, so I can't judge.

Plus, I think the triplets give you different advice according to the hack information, except it's in Russian so I can't read it.

>> No.1326345

>>1325959
The Russians are fucking hardcore. According to the Dendy Chronicles video, the guy had to play a pirated TMNT3, which was essentially an unbeatable hard-mode TMNT3. Enemies are much more aggressive with much more health, and if by chance you make it to Shredder, he cannot be killed. This was an anti-piracy measure thrown in by Konami, as it detects whether the Konami logo is present on the title card. Since most pirate games remove copyright info, this triggered the prevention system.

So this hack should be a walk in the park for Russian NES gamers.

If Extra Super Mario Bros. can be Metroid-like, there's no reason SMW can't.

Restrict certain powerups until you get to a certain point in the game, have the switch palaces function as a way to let you get to certain areas, use the different Yoshi's to help progress.

Hmm. I have Lunar Magic sitting right here...

Most certainly, although there are probably 2-3 more great Yoshi's Island hacks that came out since I made this, but honestly I am not interested in SMW and YI hacks like I was years before, as I don't find them interesting anymore (must have exhausted myself from playing the hacks continuously for years) I don't think I can judge them properly, so I'll probably just remake the old hack collection instead of adding new hacks.

Does anyone here have any experience with Lunar Magic? I'm trying to make small changes to the overworld (removing the separate screen for yoshis island, pic related), and it seems to be randomly changing levels' doors. Like when I go down a pipe in the first level it's coming out in a later level.

All I did was move the levels, I didn't edit them at all. Haven't even touched the level editor.

your moving the graphics but not the events i think. Kind of like when you copy and paste an Excel spreadsheet and the algorithms go all whacky. The events/functions are assigned to an area maybe and not to the map sprites.

I don't know. Maybe it's something like that.

I thought it might be some similar too, but the icons take you to the proper stages, but when you go down a pipe and it changes levels (like to an underground area) it goes nuts. This is determined by the pipes screen location in the stage and where it's told to go.

It's supposed to take you to 1CB (pic related), it even says so, but for some reason is popping me out at the end of stage 3... I can't figure out why still, but I see no indication why changing the overworld would affect it.

Thanks for the attempt though.

World transitions would work by pipe levels. There would be no kings castles, no airships. just a long adventure. The maps were going to be free roaming also. I was thinking a while ago that I could make a pokemon themed Mario 64 romhack. I'm a huge GSC fan (AND N64 fan), so the world would be Johto with Mario 64's assets, if somewhat modified. Stuff like caves and forests could be short levels and gyms could be extra tough levels with bosses in them. The Elite 4 would then be a boss rush before you meet a Dragonite-recolored Bowser.

Even cooler would be if I could code pokemon stadium battles and 3d models into the game and make a full-fledged remake of GSC. Always wanted a pokemon RPG on the N64, but sadly it never happened. I'll probably never have the time or dedication or skill to make something like that though, but it would be awesome. it depends on the sprite but youre usually better off inserting a copy with spritetool and editing that. sprites are actually decently easy to code if you don't care about saving space and neatness.

i've been doing snes stuff for about 5 years but wanted to start learning nes stuff. i also have been practicing japanese for a few years so i thought id kill to birds with one stone and translate a fc rom. you may have seen my thread a few day/weeks/forgot ago.

anyway after a couple days of tinkering i've made some good progress. i figured how a lot of the text routine works. i'm just posting to show off my progress. eventually i'll added lowercase letters and confugulate the special commands. like in the screenshot the data specifies only one character yet displays 9 characters (it says monster hunter btw) but i needa edit it to display 13 (MonsterHunter). yea.

I actually thought about that, but I decided to stick with Pastebin lists. Mostly because of two reasons:

Most of /vr/ doesn't even know HOW these old machines work, they probably think by blowing in the cartridges, you charge up the hamsters carrying the memory so that the game works. Once they attempt to come up with something, they'll always opt for the easiest answer, since many of these consoles had limits that required extensive thinking to work around. Finally, assembly language is like braille, except useless in the modern world.

Plus many people are "artists" first and programmers second, when most homebrew programmers/hackers are programmers and only programmers. There's a reason why a lot of homebrew games have programmer graphics.

I'm currently hacking FF7 to be less boring for replays - the way the fun materia options are limited til the end on the adventure bothered me even the first time. The desolate lack of variety in Midgar was always painful, too.

In my hack
-You start with most of the pointlessly-withheld materia that would not be gamebreaking in the early stages (so no 2xcut, W-anything or super powerful spells, but you get the counter materias, long range, slash-all, and a lot of miscellaneous materia).
-To preserve challenge, enemies' offenses and defenses are significantly upgraded across the board (regular enemies have one set of multipliers and bosses have a different one), but it's not an unfun hardtype everyone-in-back-row-in-sadness-for-the-whole-game level of bullshit. Just enough to challenge you with your expanded options.

So, I'd been meaning to play Second Reality Project Reloaded, and the anon who posted the bundle of SMW hacks urged me to get to it. I tried playing through Snes9x on the Wii and got crashes and music stopping. I tried it in Snes9x on the computer, which ran slightly better, but still had some crashes and the same sound problems.

I kept hearing people mock ZSNES and stopped using it entirely, but do most SMW hacks still require ZSNES these days? If that's the case, why do people hate on ZSNES so much? I'm probably going to have to move my computer to the living room if I want to play this on the couch, huh? :/

I also tried Extra Mario Bros on the Wii and had some weird problems in FCEU GX that I don't get in Jnes on my computer. When I start a game on the Wii, I get the game over sound and there's no music until I go through the pipe. It seemed to be smooth sailing after that, but it's concerning.

>So, I'd been meaning to play Second Reality Project Reloaded, and the anon who posted the bundle of SMW hacks urged me to get to it.

Good choice, there are few poorly designed levels and the last world kinda drags on, but it's still fun. Don't know how it compares to other SMW hacks, since TSRPR is the only one I have ever beaten.

>I kept hearing people mock ZSNES and stopped using it entirely, but do most SMW hacks still require ZSNES these days? If that's the case, why do people hate on ZSNES so much? I'm probably going to have to move my computer to the living room if I want to play this on the couch, huh? :/

Most of the ZSNES' criticism comes from the fact that it uses many shoddy workarounds and hacks to emulate the games. Emulators are supposed to be as accurate to the real deal (as in consoles, computers etc.) as possible, and ZSNES is nowhere near that.

I've been playing it, it's very nice. It's unfortunate that the developers have their heads way up their asses. They went to the trouble of working in classic controller support only to come up with an asinine control scheme that can't be changed. Everyone on their forums tells them to make it more like Super Mario World, and the devs put their fingers in their ears and explain why their method is the only one that could possibly work, with some ridiculous tripe about the differences between the CC and CCP that doesn't make any real sense at all. People kept posting ideas and diagrams but they wouldn't have any of that. They said they'd try to add options later, and everyone is just dumbfounded as to why they wouldn't make the logical choice the default with their zany little idea as a later addition.

Good game, but the devs are pretty much typical of the romhacking circuit. Swako seems to be a "master level editor", and lack of humility aside, I guess that wouldn't be too unwarranted if the levels are as good as they are (assuming he's done most of the levels here), but I sincerely think he has more than a few screws loose.

OK, so here goes nothing.

#1) #thathack [http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&a=details&id=6027]

To be honest, I liked it. The level themes are varied, the level design is pretty good (I especially liked the way of getting Dragon Coins in the first level) and the presentation is really good. Short but sweet.

#2) 1 Island Of Vanilla Feeling [http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&a=details&id=5988]

The level design is a mess, that's all it needs to be said. Pass.

#3) 2-Player Co-Op Quest [http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&a=details&id=5559]

I don't have opinion on that one, since I don't have a second player. The whole idea is nice, but the level design is meh.

#4) 5 Orbs [http://www.smwcentral.net/?p=section&a=details&id=5257]

The presentation is fine, but the level design is pretty bad and the whole thing feels pretty uninspired.

Super Metroid - Control Freak

http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/405/

I don't remember Super Metroid having *bad* controls, but after playing with Control Freak, I don't want to go back. The serviceable but sometimes clunky controls of the original game have been adjusted to do exactly what the player wants, when they want it.

I was worried that I would abuse the new "brandish" function - but in actuality I just never used it. Oops. If you want to master the new controls, check this page for information once you've progressed in the game enough to make use of the advanced techniques.

As someone who has now only finished Super Metroid once, I appreciate the changes to "aim up", "select item", and "X-Ray".

Anyone playing Super Metroid, even for the first time, should use this hack.

You need:
>original rom (readme.txt or site where you download patch should say what rom to use, its usually one with "(U) [!]" in title, but sometimes it requires very specif version
>patch file, at most time its .IPS

Use this tool to patch them:

it should be simple enough to use, but just in case:
>open LunarIPS
>press "apply IPS patch"
>select your IPS file and press open
>select your rom
>rom you selected should be patched now

If its not IPS then google is youre friend.

Final Fantasy V Ancient Cave is pretty good. The hack adds a 99-floor dungeon with (mostly) random loot. The jobs and equipment you have to work with are all up to the RNG. It works out well since there's a million ways to break Final Fantasy V. It's hard to find yourself in an unwinnable situation.

It's a Japanese hack, but it has an English patch. Unfortunately the English patch doesn't translate the hack's readme file, which explains how to access the dungeon and what the various options in the first room do. As far as I know the only place that explains all this in English is some random GameFAQs thread. So for the sake of making things easy here's a zip file with a prepatched rom and all the relevant info from that thread:
http://www.mediafire.com/?ebtc755vagl933f

You'll also want to use that srm file so you can start out in front of the dungeon. Otherwise you would need to play up to world 3 to access it.

Legend of the Blob Bros. 2. Features a unique, strong art-style that compliments the NES' limitations and SMB2's graphics, as well as some minor assembly level edits. Only downside is that there is no custom music, but SMB2's music was already good to begin with. A must-have for SMB2 fans.

/v/ is currently having a thread >>>/v/232826238 about "The Bob-omb Mafia: The Five Shells", an SMRPG hack. From what I see in the thread, it's a grindfest that seems as if Tameem "Tam-tam the Meme" Antoniades, of DmC: Devil may Cry fame, decided to reboot Super Mario RPG.

A more fitting title would be "Mario comes to Russia"

I saw the name a few times in the past but I've always assumed it's just a graphics hack. That's quite a nice surprise, I must say.

I updated the list again. You can find it below:

Thanks for contributions! By the way, play The Bob-Omb Mafia, it's truly the Citizen Kane of ROM hacks.

Someone should hack the game so that it uses the MSU-1 and allow it to stream MP3s. And then the entire soundtrack will consist of dubstep or whatever else is considered to be "edgy music".

I'm about to give VIP and Wall Mix 5 a stab. Wish me luck.
