Yeah, fires nails, like the "MG Nailgun" already on R667. I love the way that gun looks, except its edges (which I changed using, apparently, what were a rejected draft graphic or something) and how fast it fired for the tier I was using it for.

I'm basically doing a Quake weapons mod, with randomizers and everything. Since you start with the shotgun, I replaced all the shotguns with the regular Nailgun, which was a little too overpowered, so I nerfed it a little.

It was an axe, yeah. I've been intending on it...it's just that there are no good axe sprites anywhere. Also having problems getting a shotgun that isn't horribly overused. Just made an SSG to solve the same problem...not sure I like it yet.

I also don't have a real replacement for the chainsaw, just using the double chainsaw from R667 right now, because of Doom64.

I did that a long time ago in another mod I did years ago that sort of attempted to do the same thing, but with reloading weapons, and a bunch of other crap, and not very well, and it was never properly finished, and...

Point is: I made a blaster before and it was mostly criticized as "weak" and "annoying." Doom's balance has room for a melee weapon anyway; although the Berserk pack is likely to be replaced with a Quad Damage powerup or something.

Also, I did something cool nobody else did; I used the item rotations from KDIZD and instead made it so items spin and float, just like Quake. It's pretty neat to see a floating spinny armour.

No shit. I just made it. Like a half hour ago. It isn't even in the game yet, just sprites.

It's the D64 SSG reload sprites (by Cage). I greyscaled just the barrel parts on the barrels, made a second layer, set it to screen, did that twice, tweaked it here and there, converted it to Doom palette, and boom. The stock on the ready sprite is from the Coachgun, and I'm pretty sure that came from something else to begin with, too. The barrels were edited down until they were shorter. (I should have edited them on the other sprites too, but fuck it.)

Anyway, it's for my Quake weapons wad I just mentioned.

I put the Super Nailgun in the game but the rotations look like shit. I can see why other people abandoned this now.

Technically, yes. If you try to just summon them, they'll just be invisible however. You need to take the sprites from that game and put them in a WAD to use with the other game.

So if you want the Shotgun guy from Doom in Hexen, you have to take his sprites, and put them in a WAD, and then convert them to Hexen's pallete. This is the hard part, because that can look fine or it can look like shit, depending on the sprite. Then when you summon the Shotgun guy, it'll show up.

However, I'd recommend also starting a whole new DECORATE definition and making him a technically separate enemy; this way you can edit him to drop different items, have different health, attacks, etc.

Also, Blood won't work because it's not a Doom engine game. I dunno about Witchhaven but I doubt it.

The first issue sounds like an issue with whatever PSX mod you're using's KEYCONF lump. It probably has a clearclasses line that's screwing up the DOOMRL player things. So I got the idpack working.

Is mapmaking extremely hard in DOOM or do people have absolute no idea about basic level design? I'm playing some of these levels and they just use the same basic texture for every wall, some walls use what looks like a skybox texture, and enemies are just placed randomly. Half the rooms are dead fucking empty then you walk into another one and it's filled to the brim with random shit.

I had this same experience with Dungeon Keeper. If you can even figure out how to make maps in Dungeon Keeper, you're a smart person. Then they go and make a level at max size that's nothing but empty dirt and one room with enemies in the middle somewhere. Fill in dead space with impenetrable rock? No, that's silly, here you have dirt.

To make really complex shit map out the area you want to have, then copy+paste that area off to the side twice. Then make your floor and ceiling separate, since it will take you far less time to work each independently if they don't line up. I lost interest halfway in the second episode of Douk 3D, the one in space. Fuck those floating drones with Doom imp-like screams and the inconvenient damage sponge with a hitscan weapon around nearly every corner. Douk is pretty fragile to begin with.

Otherwise, some of the levels in Hollywood Holocaust looked neat for its time with all the interactivity. For some reason I like canyons in video games I blame Star Wars Phantom Menace, so that's a bonus.

That upcoming Vita port of Douk 3D would be great for a retro shooter on the go, but holy hell it's taking quite some time.

I mean, I was actually kind of hoping for a sequel to Doom 3. Like, not...not stylistically, or thematically, but continuity-wise. If Doom 3 was Alien, I wanted Doom 4 to be Aliens. And make it, you know, really solid and cool; fast paced as hell and really make it still feel like Doom, but still kind of pick up on Doom 3's bestiary and weapons.

I'm not using PS; I use an old-as-hell version of Paint Shop Pro. Does most of the same things, is very easily piratable (there is no copy protection at all), I've used it for years, and it's like 10 megs total so it fits on any flash drive. I can't do some of the more advanced stuff, but considering I only ever do Doom graphics and my album artwork, I've never needed anything else.

Kind of was just hoping someone else would slice it up and stuff it in a WAD with offsets, but that's unlikely to happen, so I'll have to do it myself.

Simple, make the second character have a different gameplay focus: Lord Blaz is about having lots of subweapons, whereas Kuros will be more about gaining momentum: Weak at first but eventually becoming a walking buzzsaw.

I'm also gonna give him a Battletoads style kick, like you know that CRUNCH and those particles that go flying out when you finish off enemies with a boot in Battletoads? Kuros is getting that. Beth are terrible devs but they mitigate it a fair bit by releasing mod tools for everything that they make, so I have to give them that.

Morrowind was great for its time, I liked Oblivion (but the cracks were showing then) and Fallout 3 was......well I liked it at the time and had great fun with it but looking back (and after playing Vegas, yes I went there)........

Skyrim wowed me for it's time too but I think even the devs know they're uninspired now which is why they put the tools out and have the community do more work.

Imagine doing a full 40-60 minute exercise routine in that armor, it would be really exhausting and it would trap in much of the heat.

The ROTT remake I didn't like because of the fucktarded movement; there is almost no acceleration at all so you can go top speed in no time and thus very easily overshoot platforming sections...which are abundant. Also, fuckloads of hitscan enemies.

However, those who played the original claim it's quite accurate.

Serious Sam TFE/TSE HD are great. SS2 is average at best, SS3 actually has some modern elements in it (sprinting, many hitscan enemy types, and three reloading guns) but most of them only exist in the first third/half of the game and other than that there's not that many other problems.

And there are people making more classic-styled shooters, but they're mostly shit and mostly multiplayer.

I'm trying to set up a zombie server (with the CoD-like zombie WAD) except whenever I start the gave it says "you have 30 seconds (or whatever) until the infection starts" and there's no way to escape it because once the timer reaches zero, you die anywhere you go. Anyone know the reason it's doing this?

Its a small simple project, mostly regular weapons replacements, but I want to add a unique melee "fists".

Well let me elaborate what they're saying.

Replacing all of the assets in zdoom with other assets is fairly easy, so is monster behavior and gameplay. Making that gameplay and monster behavior balanced takes a good deal longer unless you've had a lot of experience.

What takes a long, long time is actually creating those assets you're replacing the doom assets with.

So, creating a TC for some other 90s doom clone fps: fairly easy if a bit time consuming but a couple of months should have a polished completed project. Even easier if your "TC" uses community doom assets rather than having to redo decorate for everything.

Creating a TC from scratch, or even just new modifications for all the doom monsters: takes a long ass time. Look at Demon Eclipse for an idea of how long it will take.

Make sure you can sprite, or know someone who can, and is willing to put in the effort to make:

-At LEAST 5 entirely new weapons
-Entirely new monster sprites; you need at LEAST 5 rotations for every frame of the monster sprite except death frames. You'll need, at the very least, 4 walking frames, 2 attack frames, and 2 different death states. If any of the monsters are asymmetrical (like the Chaingunner), they should have 8 full rotations--but you can get away with 5, like the Zombieman and Shotgunguy.
-You'll need someone to CODE all that shit in DECORATE. This is actually the easiest part, and you can probably find someone to do this for you if you don't know how.
-You'll need someone to do maps. Considering you want to do a TC, you'll probably not want to do "vanilla" maps; you'll probably want to use some of the cool advanced ZDoom features like slopes, 3D floors, ACS scripting, etc. This can take a bit to learn.
-Also, since it's a TC, you'll need textures! The good part is, there's enough textures out there that you conceivably do not have to do this part all by yourself. You'll need a skilled graphic artist who can make them all seem consistent and stuff, though.

Like the other anon said, this will easily take 1-2 YEARS of consistent work, at the LEAST. It will not be simple and easy. Also, as you do it, the quality of the work will increase--the first monster you make will likely look way worse than the last monster you make, leading to a kind of quality divide, and can lead you to constantly remaking everything. This is the problem Eriance and Demon Eclipse suffer from--the earliest version had all new sprites, and they were really good, but they got overused in other mods (because they were new content) and as he improved, his new stuff largely outclassed the old stuff, so the old stuff didn't look "right" anymore, and he had to redo it. By the time he redid it, the old new stuff was outclassed, so he had to redo that too, etc. etc. and now he's done new versions of the basic Doom weapons like 4 times now. (I can seriously find like 3-4 different plasma guns by the guy.)

Anyway, it'll take a long time AND you'll probably suck at it. If you want to do something "quick, simple and easy," do a vanilla-compatible mapset. The traditional "megawad" is to do 32 levels to replace all of them in Doom 2, but you don't have to do that, you can just do a handful of them--it can be any length you want. Vanilla maps are really easy to put together and test, and they're actually really fun to do.

I agree it can be any length you want, but it appears that the community "consensus" is that the original Doom got it right, so somewhere around 8-9 maps is a good stopping point where the work feels complete but doesn't drag on. This is also dependent upon map length too though.

Well, if you are going to emulate source material, you need to add blockstun and cancelling, really long combos and probably even a block. You can use the idea from Oni - you block melee attacks when you are standing still or walking directly backwards. I think JoeyTD made a pretty excellent sprite, though it was centered.

I suppose you could always use that old Axis & Allies rip, if you paint it over to stylize it, the toggle-link system should be very easy to animate in a cartoony manner (remember, the barrel should recoil into the gun just about one pixel, it's subtle, but details like that are important).

It was a rip from an old Build game (I think it might have had something to do with TeamTNT?).

I think WildWeasel used it in The Stranger, and maybe some other mod. They were always kind of choppy and simple looking (but that was also the state of the guns in Axis & Allies and Nam).
Since they're a simple render, drawing over them shouldn't be too much of a task.

I personally think the Luger in your picture looks too big, almost like a Borchardt (the predecessor of the Luger), but if you're willing to compress it and angle it, maybe it could be made to look good.

The animations for the weapons felt kind of stiff to be perfectly honest.

For instance, the revolver felt stiff, because the cylinder (and hammer) doesn't animate (admittedly, something that's a bit difficult to draw and animate at an angle like that), couple this with the awkward animation, and it looks like a paper cutout moving across the screen.

The double-striker was an... unusual idea, but it felt as if it was anchored to the character when firing, but the stock was folded over the gun (not that I can blame the player, it has an awful awful stock).

I'll say the magic system is interesting, I haven't seen that too much.

I like the idea of a medieval fantasy game in the Doom engine, I like the idea of puzzle solving, but the execution was just so terribly terribly flawed.

Endless key hunting, endless switch hunting, enemies that aren't fun to fight, weapons that could be fun if the enemies weren't so tedious.
I go around the levels, wishing for an encounter, only to immediately regret it because Centaurs are blockwhores. It's not like running into a Baron or Mancubus in tight space, and having to take cover behind corners, run and dodge projectiles while firing salvos at them, while avoiding the surrounding imps and zombiemen.
But no, not the fucking Centaurs, here comes one of the stock enemies of the game, oh, and guess what, he's a whoreson here to steal your time, it's not even about being disadvantaged towards the enemy, you were at a fucking disadvantage in Map11: Hunted, but yet it was still fun.

The entirety of Hexen felt like a chore to me, and to me, that's not the hallmark of a good game. It had nice graphics, sound, and design, but the gameplay was extremely unsatisfying to me.

I liked the serpent/snake creatures in the swamps, that was genuinely cool, to see them skulk about in the murky waters, I liked the magic weapons, I liked the look of the environments, I liked the idea of a long action fantasy adventure, I like what they did with the engine, but it was just not enjoyable.

Reloading can be nice if it doesn't fuck over pacing that much.
Feels good on shotguns and really powerful fucking rifles.

That's about it though.
It's only good when it feels good.
Far Cry: Blood Dragon has good reloads.
CoD does not.

Iron sights has never felt good.

Reloads work for Project MSX because weapon switching is fast and you have multiple very good weapons.

Iron sights isn't necessary.
Honestly it's not even needed, even the Gauss Rifle will wreck shit scopeless(Recoil prevents rapid fire unless close range though)
Regenerating shield compliments the gameplay because enemies are so quick and dangerous.

I'd say the alternate sound pack for BDSE is a good middle ground, but I still prefer the more ear-friendly regular SE.

I messed up the bolt and mag placement and fixed it. Had to extended. Overall outline seems correct according to the source.

Screens edit and scaling is too messy. I rather use existing sprites as a base.

That is pretty much every sprite based shooter from the era.
The up/down looking was added in heretic/hexen, and it exists in all the build engine games I think (shadow warrior, duke3d, blood) but they still have the same vertical auto-aim. Vertical looking is just a cosmetic feature not required for the game play.

And yea I love it, being able to play with just a keyboard, I get the same zen like feeling I get from bullet hell type vertical shooters with doom on higher difficulties, on certain wads.

Well you have "The Outcast Levels" which was sort of like an expansion for the Doom64 TC.

Though I have seen doom 64 assets up on Realm667, may have seen some of them in wads but to be honest I have not done a serious doom sesh in a while now, I'm more focused on making a map now.

I like it when done well.

Reloading just feels essential to me (I mean, I can live without it, but if it's an option, I'll always go for it), ironsights I like having on handguns and rifles, but they're not a necessity for Doom. For a sub-machinegun or shotgun, it's a bit less consequential.

I quite like it in Wolfenstein 2009, at least when I was using the K98k Mauser, I deliberately didn't buy the scope, or silencer for it, rather, I'd use it as a battle-rifle, I'd look down the sights, and place shots square in the chest of the Nazis, but that's not even the most fun part (even though it had loud and satisfying, yet oddly soft BOOM), no, it was the fucking bayonet, it was IMMENSELY satisfying to sprint up to the enemy and spear them in the gut, the throat, the back, the face, and my favorite, was to use the Slow Down power, to sprint up to groups of Nazis, and then bayonet them all in the throat, before they could react.

It's the best bayonet anyone has ever put in any game, and it's the best bolt-action infantry rifle anyone has ever put in a game. The only thing it needed was a sharper, more echoing BANG, and a pouch for carrying more stripper-clips.

(It was also incredibly fun to use the slowmo against the stealth creatures, I didn't even fire a bullet at the first one I saw, I cut off his head with a fireaxe before he could finish his sentence).

For example, bolt action rifles are the tits.

I love bolt-actions for that too, there's something almost musical when unlocking the bolt, moving it backwards to extract & eject the spent casing, cocking the gun, and then to move it forward to pick up the next round, and finally locking it.

Something else I love, is the sound of stripping a clip into the magazine of the rifle.
