I think the smartest thing Sonic 2 did was introduce Tails as an invincible sidekick so you could play co-op with your little brother or sister and not have them whine about how the game cheats and how you let, no, made them lose. It gave you an edge on bosses and something for your lesser skilled siblings to play cooperatively without constant game overs.

I think that Tails was overall a good addition to the series as well because it mixed up the gameplay in the series to include more exploration.

Sonic alone, it's just momentum based platforming, but Tails and later Knuckle's abilities brought in more environment exploration abilities.

There was the occasional bug where you could glitch through scenery and get stuck. The devs knew about the bug but couldn't find a way to get rid of it, so they added this bit in the manual about Dr. Robotnik's diabolical traps. I recall it being most common in Carnival Night.

The difference between the swing lifts and the carnival platforms is that there's no false sense of progress with any other method. You can tell jumping does nothing for the lifts so you try other things.

But people get so hung up on the idea that jumping is what they're SUPPOSED to do with the carnival night platforms they keep doing it, they just think it's supposed to be really hard and they just suck at it.

If you play as Sonic and Tails, the 2P controller can pick up and play as Tails at any point. If they don't, or if the 2P leaves it alone for a few seconds, the AI will control Tails and generally just mimic the 1P behavior. You can do this in Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles but not Sonic & Knuckles standalone. You can also set it to do a Sonic or Tails solo run. If you're good enough to use 2 controllers on your own or have someone to play 2P for you, there are several extra areas in S3&K that you can get to by having Tails fly Sonic to them, or by flying there as Tails solo. In Sonic 2, Tails cannot fly while under player control.

It's way too easy to go fast. I mean, the first game is by no means hard, but it required a little effort and memorization to keep your speed up. All the new obstacles in 2 feel insubstantial, a lot of the enemies are placed so they aren't in the way and don't have to be dealt with, and you don't need to think about your momentum as much because of the spin dash. I wouldn't say it is underrated at all, just that on here /vr/ tends to consider Sonic and Knuckles + Sonic 3 as a single game and hold it as the pinnacle of the original releases.
