This.

It was originally revered in the NES community for the technical aspects it took advantage of. This is not readily apparent to average players. In turn it created a kind of mystique around Gimmick! which snowballed and now it's resulted in it being overrated by everyone.

Gimmick's controls felt extremely tight to me, maybe even too tight (as there was no fucking running and it felt like I should be able to run), I don't understand why you feel that way. The only problems I can think of in this game is that it awards players for learning the games mechanics, for example, star hopping across level 4 ; learning the level, another example, three additional lives in the secret on the first screen of the game ; and how short the game is. It is a solid platformer that rewards you for learning how to play, so I think it should deserve its following just like other good NES games.

Which is a fucking great game, but yeah, meets the aforementioned hipster trifecta, and the unfortunate trend with all these games, as evidenced by this thread, is that some loser out there decides they need to bring this game the honor it "deserves" like they were white knighting, all the time.

Actually, I'm surprised there aren't more Ufouria threads. That's another game that should fall squarely into this category.

It only really shines when you go balls deep into it mechanically, which is not something most people will do. If you don't bother exploring the star mechanic or getting the best end it's just a good if short platformer. Hell I doubt most people even do the best end without heavy save state abuse.

Also according to this thread liking anything even remotely obscure or japanese makes you a hipster weeaboo now which is obviously detestable and ruins the game by association.

These are very popular and established series' with many games and many merits. Characters, stories and themes aplenty to be discussed, dissected and theorised.
Gimmick is a cute little game with no story and little character that is very short and was somewhat obscure after its release. There is only so much you can say about Gimmick and it has been said ad infinitum.
Whether you like the game or not; it is no longer hidden, it is no masterpiece.

Gimmick is also popular. I know, I know, it is crazy. A game you try to hammer into everyone's head as underrated has a fanbase. I never said that the game was underrated, or hidden, or even a fucking masterpiece, so why do you continue saying it is? When those games were on the NES, their story was extremely limited too. Story and character descriptions by no means makes a good platformer, and to say Gimmick doesn't have its own theme is just stupid. Mr. Gimmick didn't have a sequel, and wasn't popular when it was released, because of how late in the NES's life it was released (note, Japanese would have already had an SNES two years before this game came out), and was also not released in many countries. As a result, it wasn't as popular. So go ahead, to one of the many Mario, Final Fantasy, Metroid, Sonic, and Zelda threads, or hell create your own, instead of shitting up this thread because the game this thread is about isn't like all the games you love.

It never ceases to amaze me just how far back you can track different elements used in games.
Thanks to this thread I went and read up on the history of first person perspective games, and ended up in 1975 (instead of Atari 2600, where I thought it started).

I guess if there's one thing the 8-16 bit era accomplished better than any other era, it was to knock almost all previous gaming history out of the mainstream "sheep" memory.

(And I was >>1406587 so I guess I too have been too caught up in the home console era to understand how far back most features really go. I'll go and repent now.)

Gimmick came out at the end of the NES's life, sold poorly in Japan, and never got a localization or port.

It was completely unknown in the US until a few years ago.

>> No.1407202

Gimmick is really good for an NES game but it was released at the same time as Genesis and SNES games. It had a target to shoot for imitating on inferior hardware and it made a really good attempt.

>> No.1407213

there's a bit of a barrier in terms of difficulty

mario games had masterful difficulty curves where the first few levels would teach you basic mechanics and the latter ones would prove more challenging, enough to get casual players motivated to finish the game.

gimmick wrecks your shit throughout the entire course of the game and, even though it's very rewarding difficulty, most would give up on the game after about 20 minutes of dying on the first 2 levels

>mario games had masterful difficulty curves where the first few levels would teach you basic mechanics and the latter ones would prove more challenging, enough to get casual players motivated to finish the game.
Isn't that what is usually called the "rule of 3"? (I'm seriously asking, I never heard this term before /vr/)

>gimmick wrecks your shit throughout the entire course of the game and, even though it's very rewarding difficulty, most would give up on the game after about 20 minutes of dying on the first 2 levels
Meh, Gimmick's difficulty lies more in the "if you don't find a treasure on all stages you get a bad ending" for me. The regular game is pretty easy imho.

>> No.1407251

>>1407221
dunno what the rule of 3 is

i meant that the game is much more punishing for those who don't play that many retro/generally difficult games

part of mario's appeal is that anyone can pick it up and be pretty good at it in a minute. with gimmick, it takes time. and it's a lot easier to blame the game on that one. rather than "i'm no good at this game", it becomes "this game is unfair"

the treasure issue just adds to that. when i've told people about gimmick's system for unlocking the final level, the reaction has always been the opinion that it's unfair
