Ikari Warriors.

The only way to beat it is using the ABBA code. Otherwise, you have to spend hours and hours memorizing that shit game that is no fun to begin with.

I doubt very many people have beaten Ikari Warriors without using the cheat.

Those Ninja Gaiden games are hard, but they're fun. It's likely that a person would sit down and memorize the levels in order to beat it.

My vote for hardest retro game will always be that bullshit, no-fun, piece of crap Ikari Warriors.

NG 1 and 2 are harder than 3.
Yeah sure you get limited lives, but the enemies don't respawn and you can use your sub weapons much more often.
However NG 3 is the best just for those reasons.

Contra 3?

That stage when you are jumping from missile to missile, holy god.

Contra series in general isn't the hardest anything.

>> No.1391824

Is gradius 3 arcade different than gradius 3 SNES? Because I beat that shit on the first try a few days ago.

>> No.1391827

>>1391809
And 3 is probably the easiest in the series

>> No.1391836

>>1391827
Also true. Only because it's so short though, I'd say.

>>1391824
It has a couple different stages that didn't make it into the SNES version but more importantly isn't plagued with slowdown and is very considerably difficult. Think of it like this actually: Gradius III was too hard for its own good; however, Konami made the opposite mistake for the SNES version and made it a bit too easy instead.

>> No.1391841

>>1391836
*very considerably more difficult

Also you can't continue at all in the arcade version. Another credit simply means a new playthrough.

>> No.1391842

the arcade one is much, much harder

I'd say hard mode is a lot tougher than later loops in NES Contra and Super C at least.

>> No.1391854

>>1391841
apart from that the levels were just plain harder.
enemies would be spawned above, below, or even behind you a lot more. Even if you got max power ups you could still easily be killed.

bosses were much less predictable and things just moved faster

>> No.1391872

i know ninja gaiden is hard but come on...infinite continues....a life bar that can take like 8 hits...

all of the hardest action games were on the arcade

arcade ghosts n ghouls/contra was much harder than any platformer on the nes

arcade dondonpachi and gradius were harder than any console shmup ever made

violent storm is more difficult than any other console beat em up ever made.

>> No.1391901

Arcade Contra was barely even harder than NES Contra.

>a life bar that can take like 8 hits

That is fucking wrong.

Also i'm absolutely certain Battletoads and Ghosts n' Goblins are harder on the NES, and Contra isn't more difficult on any other platform, it's the same on every platform.

Now you're reaching. The original Gradius is really not that difficult.

The arcade Contra is quite a bit different than the NES one. Though I'm not sure if it's really any harder. The only difficulty difference I've noticed is that the better graphics actually make the base stages easier because it's easier to judge projectile depth.

NG 3 has limited continues and the damage Ryu can take is cut to like half.

>> No.1391951

Image Fight
No exaggeration, loop 2 penalty area is likely the hardest video game level of all time.
Gradius IV
Yes, this is harder than III, even if by a slim margin. It has no slowdown after all.
Tatsujin Oh
Either this, or the JP version of Fire Shark.
Genpei Toumaden
One life only and it has to be cleared on one credit. This game also throws way too many enemies at you as compensation for you having a life bar.
Umihara Kawase Shun
Don't think much of this game's difficulty? Try going for the Field 58 exit

>> No.1391969

The only hard part in Ninja Gaiden is the last boss that kicks you back an entire act if you die.
And even then it's just tedious bullshit.

>> No.1391983

I think a legitimate list would be filled with obscure Japan-only games that were so hard due to terrible design, awful controls, bad programming, all that contributes to being nearly impossible to play, that they never brought them to the US so we won't know of them. I mean just look at half the stuff Arino has to play. Some of those are 10x more insane than something like Contra.

X-Kaliber 2097.

At easy difficulties, this game was a blast.

At higher (especially the highest) difficulties, the boss fights were pretty much impossible to beat before the time ran out.

Awesome music track though.

I figured I'll actually beat the Ninja Gaiden NES trilogy before playing the 2004 trilogy . I played the first game but never did beat it.

Anyway, should I go with the NES versions or with the SNES collection?

>> No.1392045

>>1391905
youve probably never played the arcade versions of contra

the enemies are much faster and move in less predictable ways. the infinite spawning enemies spawn at like 4 times the rate.

i could easily beat contra or super c on 1 credit. I cant even beat the third of super c with 1 credit.

This game gave me the most trouble.

>> No.1392049

>>1391927
yeah and theres a respawning 1up in easy reach for most stages. you practically have unlimited continues for this reason

only a handful of enemies can halve ryus health.
most of the bosses can be nuked down in like 10 seconds with the right ninjitsu

once you get the sword power up the enemies become much more trivial

please stop exagerating. ng3 isn't that hard.
