>Is Yoshi's Story underrated?

Depends if a game should stand by its own merits or compared to its other iterations in the franchise.

>>1374890
>How many hidden yoshis are there?

iirc only black and white, don't know if they can be unlocked in trial

>> No.1374906

Its not that great. Doesnt have the fluidity or platforming of SMW2. Its also too easy. The graphics are nice though.

>> No.1374912

It's okay. It might get a little more hate than it deserves because it had to live up to Yoshi's Island (and couldn't), but even when you look at it on its own without comparing it to YI's, Yoshi's Story is still a very mediocre game. Only thing its got is its nice aesthetic.

>> No.1374915

I'd say it's underrated, yes. I don't think it's as good as Yoshi's Island, but it's also a different game, and I feel some people are wrong to instantly dismiss it for not being Yoshi's Island. There are of course people who dislike it for its own merits, but I do feel it's often bashed to too large an extent just for not being Yoshi's Island.

>> No.1374945

its a neat experiment but the game is so easy. once you sit down and do a melon-only run, there's not much left.

>> No.1374947

>>1374945
I actually never even bothered that; I didn't want to have to play the same levels multiple times to unlock the last 75% of the game.

>> No.1374949

The game isn't very good. It doesn't matter if you evaluate it on its own or compared to any other games in the series. It loses either way.

>> No.1374959

It's way too easy. Beating a Nintendo 64 game in like 20 minutes is NOT okay.

>>1374949

It has some design flaws (as others said, having to replay story mode multiple times to unlock all levels), and it's on the easy-side and the game is too cute for its own good sometimes, but I think it also has a lot of positive traits most people tend to ignore due to comparing it to Yoshi's Island and only playing story mode once.

I say we all can agree this is no Yoshi's Island, but it's not a bad game either.

>> No.1374962

Echoing the sentiments of those who have said it's a mediocre game even on it's own merits.

It's also the game where they changed Yoshi's design to look really stumpy, gave him that ball nose and that shitty voice they'd recycle over and over until Galaxy 2, so there's another few black marks against it.

>gave him that ball nose

I think that started on SMRPG.

I think the voices in Yoshi's Story are funny as hell, but yeah it got old when they used the same generic voices and constant "Yosheeeee" voices in later games with him. In Yoshi's Story they are actually funny, each Yoshi has its own voice, and they hum along the song's level and stuff... yeah, wayyyy too cute, I know

In Yoshi's Story's defence, remember the yoshis in the game are supposed to be baby yoshis, not adult ones.

I think many people assume the whole game is short because you only choose 1 level per world in story mode. really the main game is playing through every level in time trials and finding all the melons. It's a lot like finding all the yoshi coins in smw except 30 per level.

of course the game is still dirt easy because its about exploration, but whatever

like Sonic CD, game has a lot of depth and good design if "played the way it was meant to be played"

chain jumping things in some levels is surprisingly well thought out

you guys saying it's easy...try collecting everything and getting 30 melons on this fucker of a level then look at me with a straight face and say it

The fuck are you talking about? The game was a fucking nightmare when played properly. The levels were designed to take you towards the goal, when you start trying to explore them, finding signposts and the machines, while also managing to build enough speed to timetravel is a fucking nightmare.

Sonic CD has fucking horrible design because it's trying to be one kind of game inside a game and engine designed for something completely different. It's like making a platformer in Ocarina of Time.

I agree, it's kind of like Sonic CD in the sense that a lot of people decide it's shit just because it's not like the other games in the series, and because of ignoring various unique mechanics in the games.

Everytime I see someone claim Sonic CD has bad level design I cringe... it's bandwagon parroting that got out of proportion.

How does this game look in real life? In screenshots it always looks muddy and indistinct, which seems a real shame after the wonderful yoshi's island visuals. And I was always suspicious of the 64's ability to deal with crisp sprites. But then, it's common knowledge that nintendo games always look better in motion. What's it like hooked up to a TV? I feel like this kind of game really lives or dies on its visuals

Yeah, game looks a million times better in motion, particularly because the animation on most everything uses a lot of fancy squashing and bending and rotating effects that look really nice and smooth, and Yoshi himself has a shitload of well animated sprites.
I think a lot of the issue with screenshots looking blurry is that the camera often zooms in or out to accommodate certain sections of level better.

The SNES one has a consistent, surreal aesthetic that's just plain cool.

The 64 one is a mess. Looks like a bunch of random shit thrown on screen.

I wouldn't call Yoshi's Island surreal.
Your description of Yoshi's Story actually fits that better.

The aesthetic of Yoshi's Island is clearly that of children's drawings, and is actually quite grounded.
The only part that even remotely reminds me of surrealism is the blue sea backdrop when you're flying the helicopter in one of the earlier stages (pic related), and that's mostly just because it makes me think of René Magritte's skies.

Back to the point, I don't think Story's art style is just a bunch of random shit.
It actually sort of continues what was presented in the previous game by taking a more 3D aspect of children's creations.
The levels looks like they're made out of cardboard, felt and all sorts of things, by someone with lots of imagination. It makes me think of a sort of proto-LittleBigPlanet.

I really don't think Yoshi has enough games to justify it as anything but a spin-off of Mario, as opposed to, say, Donkey Kong.

It's a spin-off that got distinctive enough to gain its own series, kinda like how Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land spawned the Wario series, SMW2: Yoshi's Island spawned Yoshi's own series. Not to mention in Japan, the "SMW2" subtitle wasn't even there, they only added it for the western release, I think it's the same case with SML3.

Yoshi's story, I think, is one of the best arguments for necessity of the Achievement system.

In theory, I love this game, and how open the different pathways are, and how many ways there are to beat the level.

But it felt so fucking pointless. The only thing that felt rewarding in the game was searching for all the hearts, but the only reward you get for that is unlocking the higher pathways. But if you already played through the higher pathways you won't care about getting the hearts in the other levels, so what's the point of getting the hearts in the other levels?

A few times I tried beating each level with only the rare melons, but so many of them were supposed to be found using Yoshi's slow paced sniffing ability, and it's so easy to accidently get the wrong kind of melon.
