It is only implied due to Darunia fighting Vovolgia and never returning. As Volvolgia apparently eats Gorons.

You can take it however you wish, it is only fan speculation based on this scene as there is no scene of the other sages that imply in any way that they die.

The ingame files reveal the Darknut they send after you as an adult has Nabooru's model in it.

but to answer original post.. isn't it implied saria's already dead/lingering in the forest temple from the start of the game? i always found it strange how she mysteriously appears on the bridge exiting kokiri forest to give link the fairy ocarina. Was this just due to limitations/draw distance or does she actually just appear like that?

Link Between Worlds has the sages alive and well, just not able to get back to their lives until Link finishes his quest. Though since it's been nearly twenty years since OoT, things may have changed.

Ruto doesn't die until TP, where Ganondorf stabs her with a sword.

There is no evidence that shows something killed them, they ascended to the secret realm and not getting back so they are tecnically dead in Hyrule, there is a dialog with Mido after the forest temple where Link tells him Saria is not coming back, but maybe they get back at the end on Death Mountain.

From what I gather, that's partly the western fanbase fault.

They wanted a Zelda timeline, asked Nintendo a gazillion times as well for "dark and mature story for mature gamers such as ourselves".

Since Zelda doesn't seem to have a big fanbase in Japan, remaining relatively niche, this is where Nintendo's fault enters: Giving in to the desires, ruining the core philosophy of "gameplay is first, the story doesn't matter", which made the earlier entries in Zelda so iconic and enjoyable.

That said, I kinda like how Ganon is the re-incarnation of Demise, and how being the Demon King he can't be simply eliminated for good... Not by SS Link's incarnation.

I see WW Link as THE finale (for his timeline), he's not the Link that fought Demise, he's a random kid who got caught in the conflict.

And because he's a badass random kid, he could end up the re-incarnation cycle, the demon's curse.

Also, to be fair, I don't think Ganondorf remembers his previous life as Demise, so I don't believe it really undermined him. As the pig Ganon, though... Well, maybe he does when he's Pig form.
