Ask someone who works for Goodwill anything. You guys might be curious as to what happens to most of the old video games. I'm a cashier by the way. Also, Goodwill stores are run by regional franchises not corporately.

Just because yours is a franchise doesn't mean there are no corporate stores and we all know about the gaylords full of "computer" stuff that gets recycled for 40 cents a pound.

At my goodwill we do that to computer stuff but the cartridge video games are just thrown away and never sold

That's completely fucking ridiculous. What possible rationale could there be for that? Are you one of the "no toy" stores?

Yes, we can't sell toys because of recalls. So we send them to toys for tots. At least, that's what we're told. But the people who work in the back of the store think retro games are worth nothing. Then the people who work at facilities just for sorting know they're worth something but the stores say they don't want them because there is no demand for them.

the goodwill in chicago that i can safetly get to without going to far into the hood sucks

And the vast majority of Salvation armies suck too with the exception of the giant one by my school. That one has some good stuff every once in a while

One day we got a gameboy color with a bunch of games. Someone took it from the back during break and played the copy of Pokemon Silver that was donated with it. I mentioned that I wanted it to someone in the back and got it with Pokemon silver, red, and a few other games for $3. Basically, the people who work here get all the good shit. Another time they asked if I wanted some gameboy games because they remembered I bought the gameboy color. I said I did and they went and seriously grabbed like 5 games out of the trash because they were supposed to be thrown out.

Oh? Do you want proof I work for goodwill? Take in mind I work for a very ghetto goodwill. The people who work there are also ghetto so they don't know the value.

I used to work at a thrift shop, and while they saved and sold most old games things a bunch got thrown away.
I was working trash and one box was just a NES with two zappers, like 6 controllers, three games and a game case. I took it home, and it's semi-functional, still needs a little work.

>> No.1354035

>>1354021
Yeah, I get some pretty good shit from there. They have a lot of strict rules about not getting stuff before customers and such. But when security isn't around we hide stuff. Some woman bought a 32" flat screen for $200 here a few days ago. She dropped it and it no longer got cable. For some reason even though we aren't supposed to allow returns or exchanges we let her return it. I don't watch cable, so I bought it, for only $20.

Very good deal, you got fucking lucky.
Our thrift shop was great - if you found something you liked you could bring it to the back of the store and every employee had a box they could keep things in they plan to buy at some point. Unsurprisingly the store closed down. A liquor store is now there.

It seems plausible actually. All I find at my Goodwills are just old computer keyboards and joysticks but never any cart based games. I did find the Blade Runner limited edition for Blu Ray that came in the briefcase for like $50 though.

I work with a lot of ""charitable" overweight middle aged women and I will tell you they will throw away something if ti doesnt fit into a category of clothes, furniture, books or appliences.. We get alot of weird items (we got sex toys once) and that kind of scared them into throwing away anything they dont understand immediately. I dont work there anymore but i heard DELL made a contract with some of the goodwill stores to buy ALL computer related electronics before they get to the shelves. Once I needed a shitty monitor for server purposes and I shit you not we had 30 of them in the back and even the employees were not allowed to take one.

There is some hope tho, There is a recycle center that checks the stuff before they pitch it and sell it to a local second hand store that sells them for a reasonable price.

>> No.1354467

>>1354460
Like I said, 40 cents a pound and for big ass monitors that's a pretty decent price, better than they'd get on the floor.

why do you do this shit? why cant you just sell on the shelves like you used to?

>> No.1354597

I work in a charity shop on the weekends once every two weeks.

I always offer to do trash duty, and locking up, because I always keep shit that goes to get trashed, and when the store closes, I can route around in the back for stuff I want, and leave a donation, and just write down "Untested Games Console" on a piece of paper out back, and no one asks about it.

This is actually the best possible answer to the Internet and reseller problems. I no longer have to go to every single Goodwill every day or multiple times a day to be sure not to miss stuff. I don't have to deal with shit tagged at eBay high+ prices, I don't have to wonder where that overpriced stuff disappeared to when it's gone the next time I see it - no doubt to somebody internally or who's "in" with somebody, or even just straight up stolen. Goodwill is notoriously easy to steal from.

With the auction cases, you really end up paying a fair price and only competing against a small handfull of locals. Even if you have resellers, they're not going to bid so high that they can't make money reselling it so you can beat them out and still get it less than if you had to buy from them, or from eBay and you don't have to pay shipping (or the outrageous "handling" on goodwill.com).

tl;dr - the auction cases are a good thing.

I work at a Goodwill and I personally destroyed a Nintendo World Championship cartridge with pliers and a sledgehammer out back and put out a cigarette on the remains, and then pissed on it and also stepped on it a bunch more times. I remember a couple years ago i had to do some community service at a goodwill in the city. Never seen any NES games until i had to get my hours signed that is when i seen a boxed version of Dick Tracy for NES on a wall behind the counter which lead me to believe that they kept Retro things in a safe place because of collectors.

How do you guys base your prices on like say Sega Genesis cartridges? And does do prices change depending on the area? Someone at my goodwill must know video games because sports games usually go for about a dollar but Sonic games or anything in general that looks remotely fun on the cartridge sells for anywhere from 2-3.99.
