Hey /vr/

I am thinking about getting a N64 if a few days time.

But the only TV I currently have is a 50" plasma HDTV.

Will the N64 work on this? Or do I need to purchase a smaller TV?

>> No.1348881

It should work so long as you have the ports. It'll look like utter shite though.

RF is the worst input quality wise

RF< composite(yellow, red, white plugs)<S-video<RGB

Invest in a cheapo CRT or emulate i think. An N64 running on any LCD is gonna look like crap.

Ask the CRT thread if you want to know more.

First, are you PAL or NTSC?

If PAL there is no hope for N64 to look decent on a flat screen, go find a CRT.

If NTSC find out if the N64 can be RGB modded, do it, get a decent scaler and an N64 RGB cable and it'll look fine even on a big TV.

Ive played on emulators before, I want more of an authentic feel. And I actually want the console, because I always wanted one when I was younger.

Emulators are good, but they don't play every thing, and N64 emulation has always been dicey with the exception of mainstream games.

It is when you are upscaling an anti-aliased 240p image up to 1080p or whatever. The blurring along the edges that would not have been as noticeable on a CRT becomes mighty damn noticeable then.

>> No.1352972

>>1352963
1) Jaggies would be far more noticeable upscaled than anti-aliasing. Your blur is down to faulty set up. Get a better scaler.

2) N64 did not have an indiscriminate full-screen anti-aliasing but a selected edges anti-aliasing. Only some edges are filtered.

>> No.1352983

>>1352972
Indeed, it only really anti-aliases horizontally from what I have noticed.

Anyway, in case you didn't know, that shot up there is a pixel-perfect software renderer, point-sampled up to 1024x768. It is as clear as the N64's actual video output gets.

why one should force point-sampling

>> No.1353012

>>1353005
Yes, it does. As for its texture filtering, it is an incomplete version of bilinear, which only uses three samples as opposed to the usual four that regular bilinear filtering uses, resulting in textures that looks slightly jagged.

It's not an 'incomplete' version of bilinear. It is simply bilinear performance mode. It meets SGI spec for bilinear.

Bilinear is always superior than point sampling when used in 3D scenes unless you are deliberately going for non-realism.

Go read an OpenGL or DirectX textbook. Point sampling was only ever used because older systems did not have the processing power for texture filtering.

As I said, texture filtering is there to make textures more realistic.

If you don't want realism/want to make something look like an old game, point sampling is useful.

Ocarina actually looked 'realistic' back in 1998. That was the look they were trying to go for.

>> No.1353163

idk about that, it still looks like a game to me

blur filters don't make things look any more realistic if you ask me...if anything it looks cheesy and out of place

anyway take a look at this, everything is so "realistic" it sucks all "life and soul" from the game, kinda depressing

I think this is more to do with the texture pack being lame and not suiting the artwork well. If the developers themselves made a high-res texture pack it would look good.

Spyro and Crash would have benefited from textured filtering immensely.

No, it doesn't. I have an actual N64 hooked up to a CRT through S-video, and despite all of the issues with N64 emulation, when it does work, it beats the absolute shit out of the real thing.

Also, there's technically nothing wrong with the aspect ratio on that shot, since it's using a widescreen hack, so there's no unnatural stretching.

You should be able to hook it up to Your hdtv, but the games will look like garbage on a modern high resolution tv.

I really don't understand all these people that have issues with newer tvs. All my consoles, from NES to N64, play just fine on the TV, no input lag issues, and no hideous upscaling issues either.
