Let's have a Goemon/Mystical Ninja thread. Here are some topics to start us off:

First of all: we can all agree the slot games and New Age games suck, right?

Second: Is Ebisumaru really a girl, like in the second NES game's ending? Even if it's non-canon, I want to believe that Goemon's chubby, quirky best bro with gas problems is actually female underneath all those layers of fat and the scarf. She'd be best girl.

Third: Bazooka mermaid kunoichis

Fourth: "Car" Magazines

Five: Let's try to rationalize the existence of an army of clockwork ninjas and a giant kabuki robot in ancient Japan.

Six: Music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQ5Mh61Zvrs

Seven: Post old Goemon art.

Eight: PLAAAAASMAAAAA and other jokes nobody will get

We the Otafu Army now

Hell yes, i love the Goemon games.
Mystical Ninja starring Goemon 1/2 are easily my favorite N64 games, and i'm playing through the SNES version at the moment.

How are the NES games? Was thinking of giving them a try.

I fucking love the music in Goemon games.
Too bad they're only doing fucking pachislot games now.

Sorta arcadey, like a stripped-down version of Goemon 1. The first doesn't have Ebisumaru in it; the second one got an English patch. Also, no Yae or Sasuke, if you're wondering; still goofy, but less over-the-top. Just an occasional robot and a bunch of Konami references.

No.
Those redesigns were completely fucking retarded, but that PS1 game is still overall pretty solid.

Recently just completed Mystical Ninja on the N64, was thinking back to when I used to get N64 magazine when I was younger and this game was shown. Well worth a play. Has that self aware humour about it which has a certain charm to it.

I believe Ebisumaru being a girl originated from one of the Famicom games, I think the very first game Ebisu appeared (Goemon 2?), at the end of the game you discover it's a cute girl that was cursed.
Also, Ebisumaru's appeareance is based on the creator of the Goemon games, Etsunobu Ebisu

The SNES game is my favorite of the entire series. I just love the adventure feel of it, and the co-op is fantastic, especially in the carnival level. Shit, you could spend an entire day just dicking around in that carnival with a buddy, playing the part-time job games, gradius, betting at the track and shooting the shit all the while.

I tried to get into the N64 game, but I just couldn't get past the transition to 3D for this series for some reason.

The second N64 game was more platform-oriented than the first one, so that might be worth a shot if it was the whole open world thing that turned you off.

And yeah, the co-op in the SNES game is easily among my top co-op experiences.

There were only 4 Goemon games released officially in english: Legend of MN (SNES), MN starring Goemon (Game Boy), MN starring Goemon (N64) and Goemon's Great Adventure (N64).

There's unofficial translations of some Famicom and Super Famicom ones, not sure which ones. I'm almost certain Ganbare Goemon 2 for Famicom is available in English.

As for a list with ALL Goemon games, that'd be a long list. Check out Hardcoregaming101.com Goemon article.

The N64 games are the ones that were best localized, with decent translation, no censorship, etc. Goemon's Great Adventure's western localization lost the original opening and Impact cutscenes, I don't know why, but MNsG is full with opening song and Impact theme videos.

oh yeah, that... well, it was a minor censorship as opposed to the censorship on the SNES game which entirely removed a strip club section.
As for the translation, yeah, a lot of it was lost in translation I bet, because it's mostly puns in japanese, but overall it's a good translation, it has charm. Goamon's Great Adventure too
