What is the oldest game that made you feel genuine emotion?

Maybe it was a story that tugged on your heartstrings and made you feel actual sorrow, or a horror game that filled you with a sense of honest dread.

The reason I ask is because I want to see the powerful emotional impact that games with much more limited hardware can have.

My answer would probably be Link's Awakening, originally released in 1993, which made me feel genuine attachment to the characters and left me emotionally drained and devastated by the ending. Without going into spoiler territory, the ending got some honest-to-god sadness out of me.

Do you have any examples from games that go back even further?

Illusion of Time (Gaia in NA). Some of my most vivid gaming memories from the 16-bit days are of that game. It was the first game I can remember playing where I really felt like I was on an adventure. Then there was the slavery and the death and the being lost at sea. Lot of emotional highs and lows in that game.

That said, LA is a very close second. Like you OP I was very affected by the ending and I still think it's the best Zelda.

Spacewar made me marvel at how complex it was. It has inertia, gravity and limited weapons and fuel.

Wizardry 1 went through various emotions like the shock of seeing my party wiped out, the joy of making it out alive after getting lost in the dungeon or the bewilderment after I managed to beat the final boss.

Dragon Warrior/Quest IV. Even with the limited dialogue between the characters in the NES verison, you could still feel the comradery between the party members. They even made the villian sympathetic, which is something even SNES and PSX RPG's usually fail at attempting most of the time. And you're left with a bittersweet ending if you're not playing the PSX or DS remakes

Pokemon Crystal was good because it actually did have some additions, and it actually came out less than a year after Gold/Silver. The other ones come out 2+ years after the original. Fuck waiting, but at least it allows you to transfer your Pokemon over if you want to replay the game.

Thinking about it the game conveyed quite a lot of plot and character with minimal dialogue and exposition. You had that little purple sprite following your main character round all the time, was a weird feeling when it wasn't there any more.

Me too. There was just something sombering about the long quest. You started out with all of your friends and slowly they all start to leave, vanish, or fade out of the story until its just you and karen. Well, the first game I really played was Yoshi's Island, and I was so young that I was deathly afraid of both the Lunge Fish and Big Bad Baby Bowser, to the point where I had my dad play those levels for me. So I guess there's that as far as dread goes.

As for tugging at my heartstrings, there's Earthbound, which was much later in my life (must have been around 14~15, when I finally really figured emulation and the internet out - and actually got a connection with decent speed), but probably still the first example of that. In particular, the point when the name you entered back in Summers gets used again in the final battle. First they just show a few letters, and I had no idea what was going on, and then when it clicked, my heart definitely skipped a beat. That was one of the most touching things I've seen in a game, and yet it was so simple.

Haven't felt that much "emotion" from a game until I played 999 this summer, but that doesn't belong here.

Same, OP.

I felt sad when LA ended and it was the first game that ever gave me that emotion. I'm talking about the original as well on Gameboy OG. I was amazed that a Gameboy game had that effect on me. I was about 8 years old. It wasn't just the ending that made me feel sad, it was also the fact that the game was over because I loved playing it so much. It really felt like a huge chapter of my life had ended or something.

The second game that made me feel like happened to be Ocarina of Time many years later. I guess I was 12 then. No other games have ever given me that feel upon completion. I never got emotionally attached to any other vidya in my life.
