That's gotta be Galaga for me
I was always disappointed when places had Galaxian instead of Galaga...
As a kid I always thought it was a cheap rip off of Galaga.

Is Spartan X pass the cutoff point? Yes, I know its Kung-Fu Master everywhere else, but fuck you, Spartan X just sounds cooler.

Mappy. That game's just too much fun, I enjoy playing the Famicom version once in a while.

Early 80s ends after 1984 so I'd say so.

I was shocked to learn that Kung Fu was called Spartan X in Japan and was based on a Jackie Chan movie.

Absolute classic. If you haven't played this on a CRT with proper dual stick controls you should do so at soon as possible.

Sinistar.

Why can't there be more blazingly fast physics-based shmups?

Pardon?

It's a 2D shooting game where you control a spaceship. I know "shmup" probably isn't the right term for it, but can you think of a better genre name for free-flying spaceship games like Asteroids and Spacewar?

Star Force. Almost feels like cheating to mention this considering it barely even feels like an early 80's game.

Yie Ar Kung Fu. The original button masher.
I kind of knew joystick & button combinations performed specific strikes, but I just wailed on the buttons whenever I played.

My favorite games in the arcades were Bubble Bobble which is more mid 80's I guess. Early 80's, Galaga hands down. That shit is just addictive!

Well I don't know about any Jackie Chan movies, but it's obviously inspired by The Game of Death, the movie Bruce Lee was making when he died.

Which, by the way, is the best thing Lee ever did, and is also very video game-like. Highly recommend anyone watch the existing footage.

Motherfuckin Jailbreak!

Hard as shit but fun. I used to go to this summer camp and they had it in the clubhouse, this kid gary who went there had some kind of rainman-esque videogame capabilities and beat the game like 3x through on 1 life, he was like 12 and used to make this weird computery sound when he walked in the door somewhere that we went on trips that had tons of arcades, like roller rinks and shit, it think he was calling to his people to tell them that he had arrived. I wish I knew him now, he'd be ultimate to bro-op with.

The only arcade game with a body count. For real men only.

I enjoy Frenzy as well.
