I really want to play Snatcher (Never tried it before) but i'm pretty confused as to which version is the best.

Based on what i've read so far it seems as if the PC engine version was the best one. What is the best PC engine emulator and how well does snatcher run on it?

>> No.1318350

The Sega CD one is the only one available in English aside from the MSX and PC-88 versions but it is the better of the two CD-ROM versions anyway.

Why is this so confusing for people these days.

>> No.1318352

sega cd is the best one because its in english... the only differences between the sega cd and the PC engine cd are ones that only people suffering from severe autism would care about honestly. You probably heard the PC engine version was the best on some weeb message board

>> No.1318358

Dude the Sega CD version is definitely, definitely better than the PCE version. First and foremost, it's in English but even if that doesn't matter to you the Sega CD has better music and light gun support and a bunch of other stuff. I don't even know if the PCE one has the third chapter!

The only thing the PCE version doesn't have is a couple tit scenes and a butt scene on a girl that is only 16 in that version, 18 in the US version. You can just appreciate these three scenes from pics online after you've beat the Sega CD one.

>I don't even know if the PCE one has the third chapter!

It does, just with slightly more interaction. Not counting SD Snatcher, it was the first version with it.

>> No.1318362

Some musics are better in other versions but overall Sega CD is the best.

>> No.1318361

Thanks for the helpful replies guys.

Is the lightgun needed to play the sega cd version or is it optional? I'm going to be running this on a sega cd emulator.

>> No.1318368

>>1318361
It's not required. Hell, it's not even optimal.

Thanks man.

Can't wait to play this, heard a lot of good things about it. I never had any of these consoles when i was younger and missed out on games like this.

I really enjoyed having the Justifier right beside me to draw for the action sequences. It's a little gimmicky but I like that.

>>1318368
I think it was probably a little easier with the gun than it would have been with the controller but the action sequences aren't really challenging by any standard except that very very last one and it's only medium-difficult.

>> No.1319261

>>1318368
I don't know why, but my Justifier fucks over on both the range and the first shooting sequence in the Ruins.

I think it's with the game because the Sega CD copy of Lethal Enforcers that came with it works perfectly.

I really want to buy Snatcher, but I can't justify the insane ebay prices for it.

MSX version is also translated

I played it for the first time a couple of weeks ago, it really is a wonderful game.

Small hint: The last action sequence can get really tedious because it's the only one that is somewhat hard, so do a few quicksaves if possible.

>> No.1319705

The PC Engine version was the last version of Snatcher directed by Kojima, so it's much closer to his original intention, but unless you understand Japanese, it's a moot point. You're better off playing the Sega CD one instead.

>> No.1319764

I just finished Snatcher this xmas, and I played the SEGA CD one and its great. I love the game. I've always wanted to beat it as a kid but i finally did and its great. the graphics are somewhat enhanced from the PC engine (very little) and its in English with a good dub.

I own the PC Engine version for many years now, and I never picked up the Sega CD version. I covet the fuck out of the latter. The Sega CD version is superior, particularly in the music/sound department.

My friend had it since release, he had some of his games in boxes at his parents house, and he thinks they threw away his Snatcher. The game is literally in a dump somewhere rotting while people are paying hundreds on ebay for a copy.

>> No.1321171

>>1321152
Damn shame, at least you can always burn a copy and run it in your Sega CD; that's what I did. That machine plays burned games pretty easily, you just have to have some additional boot data on there with the ROM for it to work.

Oh I know, and I've played it many times, I just wanted to own my own copy because I'm a big fan. And to tell you guys the horror story of my friends mom throwing out his box of games while he was away. We're pretty sure it's gone along with some other decent games.

It doesn't look that much better than the PCE or Genesis version (And what visuals that are "improved" look out of place anyway) and they completely ruined the music. The only thing the Saturn and PSX versions have over the others is cleaner sounding PCM voice clips.

>> No.1321335

>>1321320
What's with the Saturn and PSX and their lame music in general? Have you ever heard of a game remade on those platforms that sounds better than the original?

>> No.1321338

>>1321320
If I'm not mistaken, they also had prerendered CG video cutscenes, didn't they?

>> No.1321374

>>1321335
I can't really think of any other examples in particular...I guess there's Lunar 1 and 2. Lunar 1 had to have an entirely new soundtrack because of contract issues and doesn't sound good at all but Lunar 2 sounds fine on any platform.

Actually, the Final Fantasies come to mind. FF1 and 2 had completely remade soundtracks and are very well done, and FF4, 5, and 6 pretty much sound fine with minor differences. FF5 in particular I think sounds far better on the PlayStation than the Super Nintendo with its higher quality samples.

>>1321338
Pretty sure it's just in the intro.

>> No.1321387

>>1321374
Lunar 2 is definitely worse on the Playstation. Even though the music on the Sega CD was very low quality to save space, it sounds way better.

Saturn is somewhere in between the Playstation and SCD. Its the same track as the Playstation, but the instruments sound a bit better.

That's not what the PSX version sounds like at all. That's just the in-house Working Designs arrangement from the CD that came with the game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg2v-7abzBc
Barring the awful compression the uploader did to the song, this is what the actual game sounds like. The drums aren't as vibrant as the original Sega CD version, but otherwise it sounds just fine.

>> No.1321418

>>1321398
You're right, I didn't remember the music being that clear in the Playstation version as the link I posted. I do remember that shrill melody though. Definitely worse. Its not the worst thing in the world, but noticeably worse than the original.

As for FF 1 and 2. Its hard to compare the Playstation to the NES, since they are so different. They aren't bad, though, no. FF 4, 5, and 6 sound pretty much the same. The SNES didn't have FM synth, so its very easy for the Playstation to do the same sounds. Unlike with Sega or PC-98 games, Playstation can do SNES stuff just fine. I didn't really think of the FF ports. While they are pretty bad, the music never seemed off at all, no.

liek this

>> No.1321423

>>1321418
The thing also about the Playstation is that it can play perfect versions of any previous platforms music because it runs off a CD. When it gets bad is when the Playstation's actual soundchip is called in to do the work. Playstation chiptunes are workmanlike at best.

>> No.1321438

>>1321423
It's just MIDI, though. Basically the same thing as the Super Nintendo, just with more room for better sounding samples.

>> No.1321441

>>1321438
Yep, pretty much. I entirely excuse the Playstation for not having as good music as the Sega CD or Turbografx-CD, as those consoles ran tiny games that took up no space so they could fill the entire CD with stunning music. Its just that when it comes down to it, FM synth and redbook audio rock way harder than midi.
