Recently bought Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition and Shadow Warrior Classic Redux off of Steam and I felt like these three games might be something worthy of discussion on here

While Duke Nukem 3D is fun in a way, I'm enjoying Shadow Warrior much much more. Can't say I've ever played Blood though

Blood is a pain in the ass to get working. Dosbox needs some configuring and the few solutions I tried didn't work. I still have to exhaust the rest of the solutions I found, but it's been a tiring process.

The other two work peachy, though, so I'm thankful for that particularly in the case of Duke.

For me Duke > Blood > SW, though they're all fantastic games worthy of the praise that only Duke receives.

My major problem with SW is mainly from the weapons which, for an fps, is huge. Many of the guns don't "feel" right, they seem weak and underwhelming. The shurikens/uzis look, sound, and feel weak and the Riot Gun is without a doubt the worst fps shotgun I've ever experienced using. Sticky Bombs are ass, the Grenade Launcher is more dangerous to you, and the Railgun, while cool, is pretty useless. The Ripper Heart is a glorified, though overpowered, HoloWang.

I found SW to be the most fun when using nothing but the sword and inventory items. But SW really shines with its incredible atmosphere and level design, something the big three Build games share.

I disagree on the weapon front. I like most of SW's arsenal, Riotgun included. Although the Ripper Heart is a little odd.

The shurikens are designed to be weak, reusable, and plentiful in ammo. You're really not supposed to fall back on them until ammo has become scarce, much like Duke's pistol. Uzis are weak, but they are also deadly when dual-wielded.

SW is just a different beast than Duke, all the way to the basics. You're supposed to stick to cover more, due to hitscan basic enemies who chip your health a lot faster. With caution, the Uzis quickly become very powerful. But most enemies have a large health pool because Lo Wang's weapons range to a lot deadlier than Duke's (shrink ray not withstanding).

I remember getting lost in this level the first times I played it (which means, several times). I know it by heart now.

Megaton makes it really easy to play the official add ons, 2 of which are great. So that's nice.

The Workshop for Megaton is fantastic as well, very userfriendly. I can't believe one of my map is the best rated and got downloaded more than A THOUSAND times already (it's not even THAT good and not my best map). Before the workshop existed that same map had only been downloaded 200-300 times total in several years... I hope this keeps up and is not just a fad. It motivates me to build more maps.

I liked Shadow Warrior too, although some of the monster graphics somehow looked like they had been clumsily ripped from video to me. Also the caterwauling of those ripper things really did sound like a cat giving birth through a foghorn. But the weapon variety and gameplay were both great imo. I thought the first level did hurl a new player into the thick of it pretty fast though. You wouldn't be familiar with the enemies and yet you have uzi wielding hitscanners who can chop your life down pretty quick if you let them, and one of those shaded out super-henchmen in the subway (and a gun turret!). Even so, it did spotlight lots of cool elements in the game early on, which was probably the point anyway. I really liked some of the level concepts too - going around the side of a volcano felt epic. Personally I'd put Duke3D and Blood above SW, but SW is still well worth getting into (especially if you like Duke and Blood). Tbh the only mediocre or even bad game in the Build series is Redneck Rampage, they really seem to have hit on more-or-less winning formulas for the other three.

Blood > Duke Nukem 3D > Shadow Warrior
IMO

SW was still good, but I felt some of its new gimmicks werent exactly utilized as much as they could've been. It also loses points for having probably the least balanced weapons/enemies of the Build games.

>> No.1301974

>>1300684
Eh, Idk. I can't really pick between Duke and SW. I much prefer SW's level design to Duke 3D's. I think it's larger and more intricately designed, also comes with some cool and imaginative platforming at times. I also like that it has vehicles and turrets. On the other hand Duke does seem to have better gunplay than SW. SW's weapons don't feel too great but thankfully the dual uzis are a lot of fun to use. SW's kill count is also much higher than Duke's which to me adds to the satisfaction quite a bit.

>> No.1302040

>>1301974
Vehicles and turrets were cool, but rarely utilized in any meaningful way. Most areas with a turret were too dangerous to run out into the open for the sake of hopping into it. Better to just play it safe and lob grenades into the thick of them.

>> No.1302078

>>1302040
Well on some levels you needed the vehicles to get certain keys so it added to the complexity of the level design in a meaningful way; particularly so when you had to find a repair box first in order to use a broken vehicle.

I remember one level where you find a boat which also had a machine gun and it was sweet 'driving' past and mowing down all the enemies on the 'land' parts of the map.

That's the map, although the guy playing is fucking shit and also playing on a low difficulty so it's nowhere near as intense.

I'm a huge fan of Duke3D (I mean it's one of my fav games ever for it and I make maps for it), but I think that, at least as far as the original games are concerned, weaponplay was a lot more interesting in SW. You had a lot more actions to choose from between the alternate fire and also the sword.

Duke3D had a a lot of potential but in the original game it was hardly used. For instance the first episode only has 6 weapons. Then, 2 new enemies (1 of which is hardly even used) and the last weapon only appeared in the 4th episode.... and sadly I'll admit that not many usermaps take use of Duke3D's potential regarding weapons as many just stick to 90% of the fights being shotgun/pistol/rpg

>> No.1302869

Not a bad idea, for some reasons I never even thought of it before. I'll totally consider making a small mod for it, it shouldn't take much time to.

I talked about it to a friend and he was suggesting having the expander only use-able after you pick it up (seperatly from the shrinker). Also maybe could add a few pigtanks in episode 3 and newbeasts in episode 2 and 3...

Guys, I found a cool soundtrack of one duke3d mod, in Yamaha XG midi format
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IfUzubaGcg&list=SPolnf4i65EgSllD5bWKBdeEW-XWrGCYQ0

I wonder what device they used to render it, sounds a bit like MPU401 to me but I might be wrong.

I can't disagree with this, though I think I enjoy duke about the same as shadow warrior.

Blood really shines though. I remember it was incompatible with my sound card when the game first came out. Played that shit in silence and still loved it nearly as much as Doom.

I've been playing Blood obessively since this thread was made... that game is fucking insane.

I even made a playthrough recording on DOSBOX after I learned how to on Well Done difficulty of the fifth and fourth episodes. I had to keep the resolution low though because my laptop specs aren't great. Framerate is still only around 30 'cause recording but it's worth it. Thinking about uploading it to youtube but it would take farking years. Would you watch it if I uploaded it /vr/? ^_^

One of the maker of eduke32 declared in a short humble post on a forum that they're working on making the same sourceport for shadow warrior. So it's coming.

The Birth is awesome. Great bunch of levels, especially Duke Burger and Babe Land.

Now if only we could get the Plug n Pray episode from Total Meltdown. That was also a great fourth episode.

>> No.1312789

The Birth has a lot of really good ideas. Each level is pretty inspired. For example, the first level is a riff on a combination of Mission Impossible, Get Smart, and a variety of other spy movies.

I'm still playing through the SW expansions, but so far Twin Dragon is pretty good. Nothing amazing, but it's definitely the same or thereabouts quality of the main game.

I thought they were a little too heavy on the references in episode 4, and didn't like those shrink ray aliens, they don't fit in with the rest of the enemies too well.

>> No.1313354

>>1313338

Those aliens piss me off so much. They have way to much health and if you get shrunk you might as well just give up because 90% of the time they'll stomp you just as you're about to resize. My only respite is that they're limited to the fourth episode, but most usermaps seemed inclined to shove them in your face at every turn.

>> No.1313367

>>1313338
Protector drones provided something important that D3D was lacking before then, which was a hearty non-boss enemy completely immune to shrink ray effects. Duke 3D is made entirely too easy by the shrink ray. 50 max ammo is a LOT.

>>1313354

It's only possible if you hit the center of the mini-battlelord sprite. Auto-aim in the original DOS Duke made this really hard to do, only if you faced it head on. Being able to disable auto-aim in modern Duke ports make it much easier to aim for the battlelord's center.

How do the ports of 3D on PSONE and the N64 compare to the original besides better music?

>> No.1313549

>>1313394
You could disable auto aim in the DOS game too. But to be honest the game was built with auto aim in mind. Anyway, shrinking mini BLords isn't that easy and few people know about it. As for Newbeasts (protector drones) I like them a lot as they play differently than the other enemies.

>>1313503
Actually the N64 version has no music. It has quite a lot of changes and improvements withing level detailing which is nice, it also has some new weapons including a FANTASTIC shadow warrior style grenade launcher.

The PSX version has a new episode but it's very average.

Somebody made a mod porting the N64 version to PC and it's excellent, be sure to check it out.
2 different teams are also working on porting the extra episode of the PSX version but I couldn't care less about that.
