What makes these games special at all? I feel like without the cool graphics nobody would care about this game. It's just generic platforming.

Is that you Mr. Miyamoto?

>> No.1305986

It has great atmosphere, controls, music and gameplay as well. What's to dislike?

1 is kinda generic. 2 is where it got good.

1 has a killer soundtrack.

Have you played DKC2 or 3? DKC1 honestly IS kinda generic. The sequels are much better

I loved the first one as a kid, but yeah it totally skated by on the gimmick for me, plus the good music

I played the second one for the first time just recently and liked it a lot, it has good level design

I kind of felt the same way about it too when I first played it. I didn't grow up with DKC so playing it was kind of a letdown after hearing all the praise for it. It's not horrible by any means, it just feels like every stage is either a gimmick or generic platforming 101. Mind you it still looks good to me as a game, and some of the visual gimmicks are neat, but, I can't honestly see the '10/10 best game ever' love it gets as anything but real nostalgia. .

>> No.1306069

It's special to me because it was my first game. It's also a good crash cores in platforming with bad ass music and a completing art design (at least for the time)

2's soundtrack also better though.

I like 1's better. Opinions, though.

Stage design in 2 is much better than 1 though, if you ask me. The animal helpers are a fuckload more fun, too.

>> No.1306129

What sets DKC apart is its level design. True, the game's foundation isn't terribly interesting, the the designers at Rare designed fantastic levels with a decent challenge. Especially in the second game, most of the levels have fascinating concepts and required split second maneuvers and incredibly careful jumps. It's a delicious sense of challenge. Plus the game doesn't just look technically good, but artistically inspired. The backgrounds especially leave a huge impression and the music is unforgettable.

I don't think the gameplay is mediocre. Rather, I would say, again, the blueprint isn't much special, but it's what they DO with it that makes the difference. To me it's like the opposite of Mario, which has a great foundation (Mario's jumps and momentum) but IMO the level design isn't nearly as good or compelling.

I'd argue that DKC2 might be among the best sidescrollers ever if not the best. To me none of the Marios have really lived up to their full potential.

>> No.1306143

>>1306129

DKC2 really did have some great level themes, there's something kinda eerie about being in a massive floating patch of fucking HUGE brambles out in the middle of nowhere.

I love the music too, Forest interlude is amazing

All the hidden bonus levels, though. All that timing based barrel blasting. All those animal friends to ride on.

I loved it as a kid...But I can't play it anymore...It's just sort of boring to me. My girlfriend and her brother play it all the time, and I just sit there and watch and wonder how they can play it for so long.

It took what the Donkey Kong games had, integrated it into the Super Mario formula, and made it different enough to not feel like a rip-off. It's just a fun little platformer that doesn't try too hard.

Hmm.... without the graphics? Well, you'd have great music, funny characters, references to the oldest Nintendo game, a good challenge, pretty good game mechanics with neat allies to play as every once in a while, lots secrets to find, cool bosses...

One thing I think was something that really WOWed people was the blast barrels. I thought it was very cool as both a challenge and something to look at as you flew through the air at super speed.

This was one of the earlier games to have all of the elements it did.

It was pretty solid in every way.
>good controls
>good physics
>good music
>looks good
>not too difficult but not so easy that you fall asleep
>enough variety visually and gameplay-wise to be interesting, like with mine cart and oil platform levels
>nothing needed to be explained, "jump on the boss and it will die"
>featured multiple characters and a revival system without dying, allowing you to make mistakes and not suffer severe punishment unless you made more than one
>featured ridable creatures that all serve different and distinct functions
>featured many types of mechanics like hidden tunnels and collection, tires you bounce off of, barrels you blast from, hidden one ups, a smaller banana collection system that also gave one ups, etc, but none of it was forced, overly gimmicky or daunting to deal with
To name a few things.

Yeah it was pretty good. I dunno if it was the best game ever but it was up there. It's true, it didn't have really prominent things that blew people away, but everything was so well put together that it all combined to make a great game.

It was the cool graphics that made it special. No one else did rendered 3DCG on a 2D console...i think...and that's what what made up for the generic platforming. Then again, generic platforming wasnt generic when i was a kid...also continuously rolling at enemies and barrel blasts were fun. I still remember first playing at the Sam Goody at Universal Studios, back when they had games you could play...but now we have a cool Gamestop

>> No.1306806

Excellent soundtrack, great characterisation by platformer standards, a lovely sense of humour, decent enough challenge, fast and exhilarating gameplay, creative level design, functional controls.

It's true that DKC 1 didn't have anything special other games didn't have.

However, DKC 1 was the one game that had all these things togeter, rather than just one or two of them.

Saying DKC 1 was generic and sold only because of its shiny graphics is like saying SMB 1 was generic and sold only because of Mario.

I like how if you listen to each game's water theme, it sounds like you're slowly going deeper and deeper into the water.

Also come on, the enemies made such satisfying sounds when you killed them. Was there anything quite like the roar of one of those big muscley Kremling bastards eating it, or the buzz of a Zinger going down?

I never understood the "too generic" argument about this game. As far as pure hop & bop platformers go, DKC was second only to Mario on the SNES. They were real standouts in a time when most 16-bit platformers were mediocre-at-best Western developed games that emphasized animation, mascots and 'tude over gameplay, so most of them had floaty jumps, piss poor hit detection, erratic cameras and overall just boring level (non)design.

Well besides gameplay mechanics videogames are a visual medium. Atmosphere is one of the most important things about gaming. From what I remember of my youth the one with the animals was really fun though.

Most video game music is sort of generic and overrated by gamers. But that's because "real" music is made by people whose job it is exclusively to make music and, more specifically, compete for attention with other people who make music. I'm not saying video game music is bad, but it's not going to be as evolved, catchy or fun as regular music. They might be good at making music for games, but their livelihood doesn't depend on making a certain kind of music for people who really take a serious interest in that music. I hope that makes sense. This kinda happens at all levels, even with the most generic pop.

It's kind of like how video game artists might be incredible artists, but they're not going to face as much competition as a regular artist who just sells paintings. Gamers are looking for a complete experience and don't necessarily care about such intricate details as someone who produces something where the "something" is the exclusive point of interest.

With that said, it's pretty high quality video game music.
