I don't mind emulation, but i swear the response time is quicker/smoother on the original consoles. except n64.

All I'm saying is it's better to play a game and enjoy it than to not play a game for stupid reasons. If I can't afford a SNES, Earthbound, and a great CRT that doesn't mean I shouldn't play it at all.

and not that it matters, but I primarily play things on console. When I occasionally use emulators, I use the default video settings.

I softmoded my old Wii this weekend and installed the Homebrew channel. I always wanted to do it, just never had time or the motivation. I can't believe how easy it was. A short time later, after installing all the emulators and downloading some ROMs I have like 2000 games at my disposal. Why didn't I do this earlier??

I'm about 5 hours into Dragon Quest VI right now for the SNES (not that shitty DS remake) with the English Patch and having a blast playing on my 55 incher.

What did you emulate this weekend, anon?

this thread is the perfect example of why /vr/ is a cesspool of vile garbage, seeping into a hole that never sees daylight or feels the air

the rules of what it or isn't acceptable or normal here are so rareified that I don't even know them, I wouldn't be able to describe them to anyone else

there's some aspects of life where it might make sense to choose what is best, and eschew the commonplace, but we are talking about fucking video games, with just a few thousand lines of code, and some big ass ghetto pixel graphics

and I see arguments about monitors, emulators, controllers, tvs, computers

what the actual fuck is wrong with you people

do you not understand that the memories have some value, but everything else is just your arbitrary preference?

the impression I'm constantly left with is that all of you are very young, and are looking for some meaning or purpose to what you do, but there is none, not in this

I sold all of my old console stuff, atari 2600, tandy, apple 2, nes, snes, ps1, fucking decades ago. I would never even consider digging that shit up again, or buying it again. I have a modern computer which can perfectly replicate all that crap without any difficulties at all

why

thats all I want to know, why

>I have a modern computer which can perfectly replicate all that crap without any difficulties at all
But that is simply not true. N64 and PS1 emulation aren't quite perfect yet, especially N64. I'm sure you can find some issues for other consoles.

I have no problem with emulation, but I wouldn't say it's superior to having the original hardware.
There's also just some satisfying feeling you get from playing the physical console. I really can't describe it, but the feeling is there.

Go on a Magic: The Gathering forum. Preferably one that caters to T1 players (like SCG or something).
Try talking about how you proxy P9 and drains and whatnot. Then tell people off for having custom cards redrawn by the original artists.

It's not an age thing. It's a hobby thing. You either commit or you don't. Easy as that.

If you take what he said to the letter his argument might be flawed, but his point is still valid. It's not completely true but it's mostly true.

PS1 emulation might not be perfect yet, but 90% of its library is perfectly playable and enjoyable and doesn't have noticeable differences if you're not a "muh accuracy" autist. Agree about N64 though.

>feelings
>satisfaction
As long as I'm playing the game with a gamepad, sprawled in my couch or my bed in front of a big screen tv, I really don't get any kind of different "feeling", unless the emulation is objectively unable to replicate the experience due to innacuracy (not the "muh accuracy" kind but actual innacuracy), bugs, lack of features, controller, etc.

If anything, the only different feeling emulation brings is that it makes us spoiled because it makes everything too easy and trivial. You can swap games and even platforms without even getting up from the couch, save states, etc.

(Not that guy but I mostly agree with his post)

Good for you. You're happy with half-assing it, but not everyone is.

Personally, I buy shit that's broken and fix it so I can sell it to people who want it.

For me, the different controllers alienate me from the game. I use a Dualshock controller for my emulation and it's great for a controller, but it feels weird when I'm playing non-PSx games. Another thing is my primary computer is a laptop. I imagine if I could hook it up to my TV it could be a different experience.

And of course it's purely subjective that I have a different feeling when I pop Starfox 64 into my N64 vs load it in an emulator. I just like it better.

I agree with most of his post, albeit he could tone down a bit, but if I were able I'd prefer if I could own everything. It's actually quite upsetting that he'd rather get rid of all that stuff than hold onto it. Sure, no need to go out and get too many new things (I only get a new game for my N64 a few times a year) but I cherish the memories I had physically playing things. Playing on a computer just makes me feel... disconnected from the experience a bit.

And I fully agree that emulation can make us spoiled - there was a time I downloaded all sorts of games and only ended up playing them for ~30 minutes each because of that. Now I only get games I plan on playing and completing, for the most part.

>I have a different feeling when I pop Starfox 64 into my N64 vs load it in an emulator.

My only experience with N64 emulation is with Project64 v1.6, and it crashes all the time. Is there something better out there or am I forever doomed to play it on my old N64 with controllers worn out from SSB64 and Mario Party for all eternity?

Personally I find the topic of competing music mediums a fun topic.
In terms of quality: MP3 (varies)>vinyl>CD=WAV=FLAC
In terms of the aesthetics and monetary value: MP3=WAV=FLAC>CD>vinyl
Also WAV > FLAC because there are A LOT of programs that do not accept FLAC and WAV is universal with minor file size differences and the same quality. Fight me mate

Well. There's PJ64 1.7 and 2.0. Can't vouch for how well they work in comparison though. There's Mupen 64 and 1964 although I don't think they're any better.
I don't see why it crashes - I rarely have that issue. Most games work fairly well, but a handful are unplayable or near that. Some notable examples are Gauntlet Legends which is completely unplayable and Pokemon Snap and Conker's Bad Fur Day have issues with completing the final steps of the game.
