/vr/, I'm trying out various romhacks, but I haven't found a single good one.
Do you guys recommend any?
I tried super metroid redesign, and it's a pile of garbage with empty filler hallways, no wall jumping because the designer couldn't think of a creative way to prevent sequence breaking, enemies take way too many hits (it doesn't even make it hard, it's just stupid.) and they give you one missle tank and then four missile doors to open forcing you to grind for missiles.
long story short, it's shit.

Try not sucking. Redesign is a masterpiece of players who don't suck. You should have started with hacks like Legacy, Limit, and Z-Factor.

Use your missiles. The whole point of Redesign is to bring back missile management like in the original Metroid instead of being able to blow away everything with your regular beam.

Redesign is a re-imagining of a SNES sequel to Metroid, rather than a fan sequel to Super Metroid. If you play it with this mindset, I think you'll like it much better.

I've never managed to find a romhack that didn't suffer from nonsensical design or a sharp increase in difficulty to the point it was no fun. I just want a romhack that's essentially like Zelda's second quest or Resident Evil's arrange mode (The game is the same in terms of enemies and difficulty, but the layout of everything is changed and items are moved around). There's plenty of hacks out there that will give me a challenge when I want it, but none that just focus on the joy of exploring and discovering new things on your own.

Try Super Mario Bros. Special for NES. It uses the levels from the PC-88 version, which were developed by Hudson Soft. But not it scrolls properly. You can really tell this was the way the game was meant to be played.

I think I actually started that one and was really enjoying it because it was what I was looking for, but stopped playing because for some reason it didn't agree with my PSP past the first dungeon. I might give that a go again.

Some of the Wily bosses are the epitome of obscenely difficult. The wall boss (which have been replaced by Metroids) is more difficult due to how little standing place you have, and the final boss is ridiculous.
