Link is dead? The game's theme is emotional healing? OoT is a shit?

Can we not have a cookie cutter MM thread?

n terms of masks, how would you improve any to be more functional?

I would have liked a big/ small dungeon to make use of giants mask

Come back when you're willing to interpret meaning.

I just played MM through about a week ago or so. Here are my conclusions after getting all the masks n such.

>Wow, this game is a lot shorter than I remember.
>I think it would be fun if you tried to get all of the masks in like 2 day cycles or some shit. I think I did it in 3 or 4 but it's possible in 2... maybe 3.
>The camera system annoyed the hell out of me at a few points. I also never bothered to switch targeting to hold instead of switch.
>Getting fairies is probably grindy as hell in the latter two dungeons. I think I just did the first one, wasn't that bad.

I really need to finish twilight princess one day. It just misses a bit of that cool factor (probably nostalgia) that MM has, but it really needs it because it's so fucking long.

In-universe theories open the door to interpretation.

Anyone else feel that Clock Town is a Hylian purgatory? It is a hub of repetition, of familiarity, and of contained aimlessness.

I would improve any single-use mask. For example, that big mask that sniffs out mushrooms? Why not be able to sniff out invisible enemies? Or sniff for other items in the other regions.

What I don't particularly like about some of Nintendo's games is the way they treat power-ups. The usual design philosophy would be to introduce a problem or scenario, present that power-up as a solution for that specific context, and then re-introduce similar problems or scenarios so that you can find more uses for the power-up.

This adds to the replay value and makes players feel accomplished for figuring that shit out.

Kinda related, I kinda wish there was a dungeon where a switch or something would split you into different actors where each would take on one of the transformation mask forms and you could toggle between them. I think there could of been a lot of fun puzzles with that especially because deku water skip kind of became obsolete after you obtain zora's mask, I fucking loved skipping on water.

>> No.1294624

>>1294619
Skipping on water was the only fun part about being a Deku. I was more than happy to pretty much never have to use that mask again as soon as I could.

There was an amazing thread on gamefaqs about it all being a dream link had while in the time room on OOT, and it was pretty cool, as in the moon is his memory of Ganon, stuff like that.

There was also that creepypasta you probably know by now, interesting stuff.

I don't have much to add, it's one of my favourite Zelda games if not the favourite because of the atmosphere and the fact that the characters have actual lives and personalities.

Why is it always "Link is Dead?" Why can't it simply be that Navi died at the end of OoT, and Link comes to term with the very concept in MM?

All the Link is dead theories make me want to kill myself. They're so stupid.

>> No.1295002

Every lazy theory about a game/book/movie/video/etc etc etc is "X is Dead". What does it even mean if the person is dead? Who cares if Link is dead? It's so fucking lazy and so hairbrained, yet anyone who tries to support it thinks they're so smart.

>> No.1295019

>>1294015
Looking back, I kind of like the lack of dungeons when there's other content to see in the game. So many things take place during the time cycle of the game, and you can't be everywhere at once, it can really take you a while to put everything together and get a complete picture of the world. In OoT, time was linear in the sense that when you triggered an event, it was done for the rest of that playthrough, while with MM it would reset every time you went back to day 1, requiring you to explore and discover it again.

I can understand that sort of exhaustive trial and error discovery can be annoying for some, and it doesn't make for great replay value when you're doing it over again after already knowing it all, but it's great the first time you do it.

Majora's Mask seems like a really easy style of game to make.
Like you just take a decently sized hub, cram it full of NPC's, and give each NPC 2 or 3 sidequests. That's the easiest and most fun way to make a game I can think of. Makes me want to make one myself.

To be honest, the Stone Mask is already pretty useful in the Pirates' Fortress. But, I would have maybe implemented a "searchlight" mechanic of some sorts for it to see some more use.

I'm not sure of any other ones and would be happy to see a list in popular media. Or I guess I can trope-search it.

Part of the reason why I think the "Link is Dead" theory works in Majora's Mask is because death is already such a heavy theme. Everything that happens in the game is tied in some way, shape or form to accepting one's mortality or grieving.

Whatever the case, the iconography, setting, and characters of the game really lend themselves to critical discussion, query, and interpretation. Few games do that, in my mind.

>disprove it
I don't think that's how it works, dawg.

I think part of why the "Link is Dead" theory works is that Termina feels very much like a Purgatory for Link. He's forced into this hopeless situation, trapped in a Deku form, with next to no one wanting to help. The first two people Link meets in Termina are the Skull Kid and the Salesman, both of whom are for the most part mysteries, the Salesman remaining so even after the ending.
