Pretty sure Sonic 2 is widely regarded as one of the best if not THE best of the Genesis era Sonic games.

Both sides are going way too far. I agree 1 is better than 2 simply because it set the framework for the series perfectly and had some of the most interesting level design of the Genesis games, but 2 is by no means shit. It's a great Sonic game that built upon 1 and is an all around solid title, it's just that 1 and 3&K were both more revolutionary for their time.

You realize most of Europe bought SEGA consoles over Nintendo and that the Genesis was outselling the SNES for about half of the 4th gen in America, right? Yeah, I've heard you can replace the FRAM, but I don't really have steady hands like that. I can beat the game in one sitting anyway, with like 20 lives left over, I don't need to save. Besides, it's a bit nostalgic to see all the really old saves still there. When the write ability died, I couldn't delete them or overwrite them, so the old saves are just sitting there, forever etched in stone.

Something bad about Sonic is that people who never played one of his games never know which one to pick up because there is a lot of disagreement about which games are good and which ones are shit.

With Mario you know you can't go wrong recommending Bros 3 or World. And anyone should play the first one.

I agree that Sonic 2 was a fantastic game, I played it for hours as a kid, and I still remember how hard my heart pounded reaching the last levels and beating the final boss... but you sound pretty damn stupid to insult anybody on /vr/ for having "nostalgia goggles". I love the sonic games to death. But that is patently false. Sonic does have a deeper level of exploration with getting the chaos emeralds. But the breadth and depth of what you could do extra in Mario makes it an unfair comparison.

You can say Sonic is more fun but Mario has way more under the surface.

But the levels very obviously were not designed or ever intended with the spin dash in mind. Sonic 2 was my first Sonic game and I will never, ever understand this complaint.

Why are you people comparing two completely different series? Both of them are good, and saying one is better than the other is ridiculous. Its like trying to say one genre of games is better than the other, it just doesn't work. Sonic is about gaining speed as a reward for avoiding enemies and traps, and Mario is about precision jumping and landing in the proper spot in order to set up the next jump. Is it that difficult to understand that both series can be good in their own ways?

I liked SMB3 and SMB2 (US) a lot, but I actually agree. The Genesis/Sega CD Sonic games as a whole were better with the exception of Sonic 2.
