Can you give me the most challenging retro games that also come with excellent gameplay? 'Cause to me that's pretty much the best game there is: orgasmic gameplay and challenge.

All genres welcome, platformers, shooters, whatever, across all systems. Thanks.

For an FPS I'd say Perfect Dark on Perfect Agent mode for N64.
One of the best FPS games of its time and the difficulty actually adds objectives and improves AI as compared to take more damage do less damage.

The good NES games known for their difficulty are Battletoads, Ninja Gaiden, Contra and Castlevania.
I prefer the first 3, because in the first 3 you always know what you have to do to win, in Castlevania it is almost impossible to beat the game using only your whip and you have to learn (google) the right strategy to beat the bosses with the items.

My topic for this game got dupe file, so let me try here (sorry if this is hijacking too much):

Autoaim on or off? On seems too easy and off seems a bit too hard, and the difference between the two is quite noticeable. I don't like how autoaim seems to make your cursor find targets through floors and walls, but I don't exactly like trying to aim without it, especially in multiplayer. Any advice from more experienced players? I only just started playing the game.

I tried holy water once and it didn't work for me, so I assumed it wasn't as good as cross. I know now from watching speedruns, but on my first play I did beat it mostly without ever touching holy water. I won't pretend to be those supergods that beat it with leather whip only though.

This is actually news to me. I've played through the first three games several times and I was always under the impression that holy water was shit. When/how do you use it?

>> No.1290878

>>1290870
I always thought that too. The OP about holy water is because it sits there burning for a couple seconds so you don't really aim it, you just throw it where a boss is going to be. It does damage over time and it also makes a lot of bosses freeze. If you have double or triple and enough hearts many, if not most bosses can be beaten with holy water only, not even whip.

I remember it being pretty hard. Had to memorize every stage to beat it.
Also, I recently replayed the Strike series again (Urban, Desert, Jungle) and it's actually gotten more difficult for me. I can't really say as to why.

I am the person who posted this.
I didnt have much problem until Death, I watched a few walkthroughs and speed runs and I thought I was screwed because I had no holy water and it must be super hard to beat it with the whip.
I managed to beat it with the cross, you can throw it immediately twice, and it hits twice because it's like a boomerang.

I beat the first form of Dracula with the whip, and the second with holy water + whip (didn't have enough hearts for just holy water)

You purposefully cut gameplay elements (subweapons), then blame the game for it? What the fuck? And... you googled to beat Castlevania? Fucking seriously?

Giving you the benefit of doubt, I would suppose you are talking about the Dracula boss fight. Well, there is an easy tactic, but he's perfectly beatable with any subweapon or just the whip, too. It's not like you can't progress without some sort of cheat. The subweapon you're supposed to discover yourself - and keeping it is not an easy task either, even if you know which particular one you need.

In a word, that's stupid.

and in NG it is almost impossible to beat the game using only your sword. and in Contra it is almost impossible to beat the game using only your standard gun.

I always played with autoaim on. Never tried switching it off, but I imagine it must be way goddamn hard. I think autoaim is actually your friend, and it does not really makes thing that much easier. Play it on Perfect Agent and you'll see what I'm talking about.

And if you're playing on the N64, please, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD switch for 1.2 controls instead os 1.1. The stick is meant for aiming, and the C-buttons for movement. It gives you a much more precise control of the aim.

Ketsui. Best shmup in MAME, challenging enough that I can't get past stage 4.

If you want something easier, Espgaluda runs on the same engine and is much more approachable for noobs. I've 1CCed Espgaluda (hint: don't rely on your autobombs, manual bombing is much better).
