NEWS
****************************

-An anon put up recently a neat website for everyone to upload wads, go check it here
http://pseudo3d.org/wads/

-December 10th marked the 20th anniversary of the release of the shareware version of Doom; there were tons of stuff and special events that were done for it, if you missed 'em all, feel free to ask for links to them!

-No sign yet of the Cacowards; the latest official word is that one of the dudes in charge was having internet troubles, but two days ago he finally appeared only to confirm that we're going to see the Cacowards "Soon (™)". Also, we do not take part in anything related to rumours and "leaks" of sorts; we're expecting them to be posted as anyone else, yes, but we're not that desperate to see 'em right now to the point of making shitstorms about it. In short, take anything posted here related to the Cacowards with a grain of salt - Instead, use this link to check for any important (and official) updates http://www.doomworld.com/20years

-Samsara is getting BIGGER, BADDER and BETTER. If I were you, I would keep track on future news. Special gore modes have been implemented, but we all feel there's more to come!

-OBLIGE's developer (andrewj) stated before that the final version of it would be released by the end of the year (most likely this month). However, in a very recent turn of events, Andrew changed his mind and he'll keep working on it! (Yay). Go grab OBLIGE v5.10 (WIP) here http://oblige.sourceforge.net/forum/index.php?topic=289

-Reelism is expected to receive an update in certain things such as new levels (so far, a MAP07 tribute has been confirmed) and new "reels", stay alert for any movement regarding one of the wackiest mods in the community

-ChocoDoom got updated in the 20th anniversary, but it didn't stopped there. Now you can play Heretic, Hexen and Strife too! Go grab each version of them here! http://www.chocolate-doom.org/wiki/index.php/Downloads

If I made a map and somebody played it with a mod that does things differently to how I originally made it (like he runs it with samsara or brutal) I'll be happy if he has fun, but he'll have to go into it knowing that if he does not like it then he should play it as it was originally made.

There is what the author/artist makes and they want to see something appreciated as how it was made first, before any alterations.

Not to say it should not be allowed but creator should be allowed to ask people to appreciate something they made as is without having "i can do what i like!" thrown back them as the first port of call.

you keep focusing on what people "should" do and what's "good". imo what's important is what people *want* to do. you seem to draw the line at people making changes that *you* wouldn't like, but why do you mind if other people are doing something you wouldn't enjoy?

Maybe because they made it and so can suggest to a user the manner in which they expected it to be used/viewed/enjoyed?
It's like a painter telling somebody you might enjoy a painting better if you looked at it with your own eyes instead of having somebody else describe it to you over the phone.

Sure, they can do what they like if they want to be unorthodox about things.

There are many things about art that are subjective but there are some methodologies of experience that are clearly better than others. Listening to music through proper equipment is one, as is looking at a painting with your eyes open.

A person can modify something as they like and if they enjoy it then I'll be happy for them if I'm the artist, but *as* the artist I reserve the right to tell them that while they can experience things another way I originally made the product with a different means of going about the experience in mind, an artist is trying to communicate a point - remember this as it's one of the most important things about art you can ever possibly know. They may suggest to you another way to reach/understand the point they are trying to convey is through a suggestion they make of you.

I have explained this as clearly as I can.

As a side note I hope this "everything is subjective" viewpoint of yours does not traverse over into things that are very much considered objective like basic mathematics.

>> No.1277403 [DELETED]

>>1277381
It's not about what *i* like. You seem to believe that ALL changes not intended by the original creator are fine as long as the person 'likes' it.

But I think there is a limit to the "it's all opinion/it's all taste/there is no right or wrong" train of thought.
If someone renders a song out of tune and claims he likes it better that way, then he is wrong, because he has no musical hearing and can't even tell it's out of tune.
If someone takes my Duke Nukem 3D map and uses the HRP, spritework will be changed into 3D models and won't even represent what they're supposed to represent (in DN3D, adding several sprites together to create the fiction that it's one whole object is very common but 3D models break that), etc.
If he will use 'Brutal Duke', the enemy placement that I thoroughly thought out will be ruined by a different enemy AI, as will be the ratio and balance of ammo and healing items. Therefore, the experience will be worse. But people will like it because 'lol so much gore awesome! duke totally insulted this aliens' mama he's the king xD'

It's not what about 'i' like, it's about making sure what you create remains as good as you wanted it to be for other people's experience.

Now, people usually tell in .txt files with maps what visual mod is intended, or if it's compatible with a gameplay mode etc, but people never read that; and sometimes, people don't even respect the authors will by using their map into episodes for gameplay mod without their consent.

>If someone renders a song out of tune and claims he likes it better that way, then he is wrong, because he has no musical hearing and can't even tell it's out of tune.
he might like the sound of something out of tune
what i'm trying to get across is: why do you care how they enjoy it?

>Therefore, the experience will be worse. But people will like it because 'lol so much gore awesome! duke totally insulted this aliens' mama he's the king xD'
the experience will only be *worse* from your perspective. it might be better from theirs, if they place more weight on gore and catchphrases.

>>1277401
i get what you're saying and i agree, but i don't think the artists intention is nearly as important as what makes the audience happy. sure, you can talk about your intent, but what does it matter? if something is making drastic changes to a work they are obviously doing it for their enjoyment, and drastic changes are what we're talking about, really.

>> No.1277413 [DELETED]

no reason to debate idiots. Obviously if you spend hours modifying your map to fine tune the gameplay to specific enemy patterns and values, and then some moron changes those because DON'T TELL ME HOW TO HAVE FUN OR HOW TO PLACE MY IKEA FURNITURE !!!- I can see how that might be annoying and disrespectful to your hours spent crafting that specific experience.

obviously you are free to do whatever you want, doesn't change that you are drastically altering the intended experience (while different layouts of your furniture doesn't alter the intended experience your furniture is supposed to give you). It's like playing a game with cheat codes from start to finish. Obviously IT IS NO BUSINESS TO ANYBODY IF I WANT TO PLAY THIS GAME WITH CHEATS OR NOT but you are clearly bypassing all the hours spent crafting the gameplay

Because the artist is trying to *say* something, to make a point. Because a work is recognized as coming from an artist and not a naturally occurring phenomena, the artist is considered a strong point of referencing an opinion.
This is why at art shows you see...gasp...the artists, telling viewers what they were trying to say with their work and if somebody takes a picture and fucks with it it is made clear to them that while that is ok to do, it's not what the artist had in mind when they made their work.

This is a very easy concept to understand and why you are struggling to grasp it I can only conclude is coming from a desire to be sophistic.
You say it does not matter what an artist thinks, I'm explaining to you why it does.

It would be like me taking your posts and then writing knock knock jokes instead and saying "it's on my computer now i can do what I like" and acting like you're a jerk when you say that is not what you were trying to convey.

You keep saying "it's like..." but none of these things would matter. the only problem would be if you based what you thought of me on the knock-knock jokes you wrote. but nobody altering art would judge the artist on their own changes.
we obviously just have different perspectives and that's cool so there's not really much reason to carry on chatting. i understand that if you change something, it's not what the artist intended. personally, i don't think that matters. i can see it does to you though, it's all good :)

>So I can't criticize theft if the thief is not stealing from me ie not affecting me directly?
theft has a direct negative affect on the victim. altering some art (as long as it's not the original) doesn't affect the creator or change their situation other than possibly making them upset.

it's like my previous example with audiobooks or reading only synopses instead of reading the actual book. It doesn't affect me or anyone directly, so I can't voice my opinion on how retarded doing something like that is, or disapprove of it?

Piracy doesn't affect anything directly but it's not exactly moral and un-harmful, but according to you I can't voice my opinion on it because it doesn't affect anything directly.

I suggested an idea for /vr/.wad which consisted of creating a Boom-compat levelset inspired by Episode 1 and using only textures from that episode.

But, truth be told, at this period of time a large portion of our people are focused on their own projects and have little to no time to get on other stuff like mapping (seems reasonable, of course).

Others don't seem to be interested that much into mapping, despite being shown from time to time that it's quite easy to get oneself into creating basic maps in less than a week

Pretty dumb.

the whole argument is dumb, obviously someone spent hours carefully constructing the personality of his stupid vidya level by fine tuning it to specific gameplay values, and it's obvious that the author would like for people to enjoy what he created instead of some thoughtless dumb modification

>the person making the changes would know it's not what the artist intended though, and wouldn't judge them based on it

Yes, this is the correct view.
A creator is allowed to communicate what it was they were trying to convey with their work. We have a term for this and it's called an "Artists statement".

Well that's like your opinion man, I consider making maps for oldschool FPS 'more' artistic than a lot of things that 'some people do and call themselves artists for' (I know this is a very vague definition...)

The problem is that nowadays we can't use the word 'artist' anymore without people thinking we're overpretentious. The origin of the word art comes from craftsmanship, building things with your tools, and when I make a map I'm building a virtual environment with the tools given to me. Sounds pretty close to the origins of the word to me.

Anyway back to main topic, I just finished playing Back To Saturn X - Episode and I'm currently playing Community Chest 4 (which is good but imo not as good as Saturn X), pic related, wasting shots to kill an Archville through the hole between the door and the wall.
Can anybody recommend me a rather high quality recent wad (preferably with lots of maps) ?

You sounds a bit selfish.

Some people simply think that a music can sound better with some differences. This is why remixes exist.

> You seem to believe that ALL changes not intended by the original creator are fine as long as the person 'likes' it.
Yes, they are fine. Nobody is forcing you to use these mods.

> Now, people usually tell in .txt files with maps what visual mod is intended, or if it's compatible with a gameplay mode etc, but people never read that; and sometimes, people don't even respect the authors will by using their map into episodes for gameplay mod without their consent.

Not him, but the reason most people dislike people that will play stuff with their favorite mod (most commonly brutal doom, but there are others) and only their favorite mod is not because they play it with their favorite mod but because they will complain about or deride the work (not necessarily directly to the author) because it is unbalanced when used in conjunction with their favorite mod.

They will also generally not play other projects or TCs which make gameplay changes of their own (so fuck any atmosphere or work the author put into that) or are otherwise incompatible with their favorite mod.

For fuck's sake there are people that complained about/wouldn't play the aliens TC (the newish one, not the old one) because it wasn't compatible with brutal doom.

This mostly doesn't apply to things like beautiful doom that make very little or no gameplay changes.

Speaking of which, define "vanilla", because I was planning to put up a project which consists of nothing but a graphic enhancement to the game. Just sprite edits and nothing else, since I envisioned this little work for everyone to play with it (non-zdoomers and zdoomers).

The main focus of this thing is the graphic edit, and I was planning to go with a randomizer for some decorations such as the candles and certain light tubes (and this is most likely where the zdoom aspect of the mod will enter)

If you think that's fine then I'm glad I don't have your ears. I also believe the same logic can be applied as far as graphical and gameplay/balance changes go. But sounds like we're turning in circle here, as you're not going to change your "everything is beautiful / nothing is right or wrong" attitute, either, so I won't go further on the subject as it's not going to go anywhere else.

Who makes the rules? Genres only exist because people started making music in them. There's plenty of music across all genres which makes use of traditionally "ugly" sounds. Why impose these limitations, telling people they are wrong for liking the way certain music sounds.
>"everything is beautiful / nothing is right or wrong"

IN ORDER:

The melee system as it stands is pretty varied, at least for Doom. You're guaranteed to have at least a pretty looking combo if you just mash Primary and Alt. Fire, so that's pretty cool.

Right now, the SMG has a combo system implemented but I don't know how I'm going to go about doing it for anything else. The main pistol is pretty cut and dry, especially with the crazy chainsaw replacement that'll be coming whenever I actually get to doing the graphics.

As for the shotgun, well...I had this insane system for different shell types that'd have different effects, but I really wanted it to be good. If the idea gets in exactly like I want it to, you'll be able to have a magazine of 8 shells with different effects. The trick is getting the game to remember which shells you loaded in, and with there being four different types...it's gonna be a pain in the ass if not impossible to do.

Everything meaningful or novel that could be said about it was said within 3 posts but they kept on about it for almost 100, using metaphors and namecalling and "define the word 'is'" bullshit to rehash the same thing between themselves, occasionally joined by others for several posts.

Are there many sprites, game decorations that use women impaled on spikes or hanging from the ceiling? I know duke had women ensnared in those plant things.

Really, it's probably not too taboo unless it's only women, in which case someone might raise an eyebrow, but unless it's creepily fetischized, it'll probably not raise too much of a shitstorm.

In Diablo, you could find naked men AND women hanging from hooks/chains on walls, impaled on spikes, cut in half on the floor, etc.

When you double-click on GZDoom, a screen should pop up telling you whether you want to play Doom, Doom 2, or something else. If this screen doesn't pop up, you fucked up something in your initial set-up session.

For vanilla compatability, use midi. You could go all out and use a converter to convert it to dooms internal .mus format, but that's not really required unless you're aiming for it to work on ancient versions of the vanilla exes that no one uses.

As for source ports, most of the good ones accept "normal" audio formats like mp3, wav, and ogg/vorbis, so if you're making music for them, you'd do it like any other music.

Well, take more notice of how long a notable project goes in development for, and when it got popular. Analyze Brutal Doom and Samsara, for instance.

Otherwise, make some good maps with interesting archeitecture or weapons that look amazing to use and whatnot, post screenshots here, host development releases for us to play, and maybe host them on best-ever servers on Z& if applicable.

Were you around here when projects like Cyberrunner or pol.wad were in the making? People saw those screenshots and were like 'Fuck man, I wanna play that wad', and then /vr/tualboys were eager as fuck to play some development version to help give advice for a more polished piece of work.

The fact that alfonzo was out of the loop since November 7th and apparently did most of the cacowards according to kmxexii

>Alfonzo and I had been in contact in the weeks leading up to the Cacowards. He ostensibly had things set up to go, with Xaser taking a more ancillary role as he hadn't spent a lot of time playing Doom this year. Neither had I - after a bout of pneumonia in late June I avoided playing Doom for about four months before coming back into this. Alfonzo was on a business trip since D2TWiD's release and on coming back I guess his internet was fuxxored, with him using a library connection for communiques.

>the map gives you TONS of health and ammo, then fight a Cyberdemon with a horde of barons while 2 revenants shot at you from where you can't reach them, while being on a very tight corridor with NO way to take cover (btw neither can you reach the cyberdemon, either, so you're forced to play in the unique one way the author intended, making the gameplay very one dimensional and giving it ZERO replay value but it's not like i was willing to ever replay this anyway)
>then nothing, then again the way the author sees "balance" is giving you 200 HP / 200 ARMOR and 80 rockets, then fight 2 cyberdemons in a very confined square area with walls close up to you so that rockets dmg you even when they don't hit you, while the cyberdemons keep spawning out of the area to fuck you even more from away unexpectedly JUST to respawn right into your face not even 5 seconds later

Simply because no counter argument can be made to that.

Yeah there's some implication they're related, in the same vein the cyberdemon is the demon killed by BJ and the cybernetic parts are the bits lost in it's battle with BJ. THAT however, is the story of the Wallenstein RPG so it may be different.

Though Romero states Doomguy is supposed to be the player others say Buddy Dacote, or Flyn or who the hell ever.
Then in the Final Dooms it may be a different character as well.

i think he kind of worked backwards in a sense. instead of drawing linedefs and sectors and putting textures on them, he went the other way, fitting the level geometry to the textures.

like in your picture the panels in the wall and the gaps in the pillars exactly match the tiles of the star* textures.

i think you can see the same kind of thing in btsx, as other designers have cottoned on to his techniques.

That's completely different and wrong. In Half Life, even though you're not fighting enemies before a long time, there is a LOT going on. There is the game's worl setting up, there is action, suspense, even some horror.

In Swing With The Wales (or whatever the name was I'm already not sure anymore), there is literaly nothing going on. It's as if the mapper believes that his visual design is so good the map is worth enough on its own with nothing going on in it. It's incredibly prentetious.

But now that I see you believe it's the same as Half Life (even though it's completely different) I'm starting to see why this wad is so appreciated. Well I'm telling you, the comparaison is off by a thousand miles.

His posts in DW do not indicate something that can get you losered or anything. And there's nothing in Post Hell that can prove that Scroton got loser'd

people who felt that the Lion King was an awful movie because the animals
seemed to resemble stereotypes of ethnic or racial origin, I suggest that
you use considerable prudence using this CD-ROM.

>Doom is not a politically correct game. It's designed to illustrate a facet
of war. War is not politically correct. My wife and I have not bought any
toy guns for my two year old son. Nevertheless, he uses sticks, duplos, and
his fingers to convey shooting a gun quite effectively with accompanying
sound effects involving lots of spitting. From that observation, I must
conclude that our nature must have some sort of competitive innate drive
for this behaviour. Doom is a fantastically designed shoot-em-up style
game my son has watched me play for many hours. After playing the game, and
for that matter, cowboys and indians and all the other politically incorrect
games when I was a youth, I have no urge to join the NRA, buy an assault
rifle, or kill anybody. It's just a game folks.

Here's the deal; he wants to act like mr ebin trole again.

His original plan (if I recall correctly) was to leave anything completely unrelated to Fractal Doom IF it happened to win a Cacoward and/or even get mentioned. But since nothing happened, he went and blanked his posts again, mimicking what he did to "protest" against Sgt.Mark's banning from the zdoom forums

He's coming back in a week, I can almost feel it, because NO-ONE outside of /doom/ actually knows him or gives a fuck about him to actually post something immediately when the blanking happened in both the ZDoom and Doomworld threads. Everything from the above would've worked if he was actually that well known, but he fucked up.

(Well, to be fair, my guesses are that some of the zdoom forum regulars DO know about the blanking by reading our threads, but then again, they're too much scared of ever being related to anything-4chan to admit they browse our threads, but whatever.)

And also I am wondering which one of the /doom/ regulars spoke to him when someone on the IRC shared a direct link to his profile when he was still logged in the ZDoom forums, just to see him logging off immediately after. I do not want to start looking for answers so I'm leaving it to whoever was to admit it

This is so dumb and boring, seriously. If it actually made sense I would've played along with him but fuck it

All he said was that he didn't think fractal doom would win anything, and that the cacoward people probably hadn't even played it, so it would be funny if he replaced the information with incorrect information regarding fractal doom prior to the cacowards release. The idea being that in the unlikely event fractal doom was mentioned at all it would reveal that the people writing the blurb hadn't even bothered playing it and had only scanned the forum post. He never changed info regarding the mod (AFAIK) either before or after the cacowards. Anything past that is speculation.

It's a cool idea, but I don't think you will get much traction. It's just too much effort for most people when the game will only be active for a few hours or so before everyone loses interest again.

I used to try to get a similar idea off the ground, only instead of just one game, we would move to a different obscure, dead game every day or so.
Got a bunch of people together who all thought it was a great idea and that they would be "totes down for that", and we played an uproarious night of Deus Ex multiplayer.

Then they all went back to the same shitty games they always play 24/7, saying that it was "fun but too much effort" and that I should "let it die while it's still a good thing".

I downloaded a program called VirtualMIDIsynth, and then that Arachno soundfont, then set the virtialmidisynth program to use that. You can set the midi driver in G/Zdoom's audio menu.

It's a bit of a hassle, but it's definitly worth it if you play alot. The default midi sounds are atrocious by comparison. Only downside I've noticed is it takes a bit longer to load up, my PC isn't great (1.8ghz dual core) so if you've got a worse one it might take even longer.

it's pretty straight forward, you can have odd hell bits here and there if you feel like it, but make sure they're some kind of teleporter to them

Hey, sorry for asking a question you are probably tired of answering, but I realized recently I never actually completed any Doom from start to finish, and I wanna fix that. I downloaded zdoom and iwads from pasta, but other than resolution I want to go for a vanilla-ish experience. Are there any settings that I should change, compared to default zdoom settings? Autoaim is there because (vanilla) Doom lacks vertical aiming, right? Does fall damage defaults to "No" in vanilla Doom too?

>> No.1283820

>>1283780
like I said, if I made a techbase and wanted to throw out something hellish in a cool way, I'd make a secret room all fleshy and weird because there are demons and demonic presence
"why would a techbase have secrets?"
is what I ask myself every time I put a secret in, some like a secret vault are, other are optional weapon stashes that you can't get into without some switch or something
others, maybe a hidden wall just to throw it out, you don't want it to be too realistic

to maintain a theme is simple, just use the textures without crossing over too much, that is what I am saying
look at ultimate doom for the best and quickest explanation, the theme is techbase in space
so you get that, then there's techbase above hell and in hell, and then there's hell
try your best, because I know you can make something good, everyone can they just need the right motivation, especially when they're unsure
