Network Q Rac Rally Championship is my favorite rally game to this day, and probably the rally game I spent more time playing in my life. I still fire it up in Dosbox ocasionally.

finished it recently, won the A7 class with a Megané with a time of 1:59:44
was extra exciting after I ran out of gearbox changes and had to drive the last 7 or so stages without 7th gear and constant dropping to neutral

oh it might look like that, but the game can be pretty intense and requires a lot of endurance

most stages take 10-15 minutes to finish, some even longer
compared to the measily 3-minutes-flat stages in pretty much every other rally game, sim or arcade

I remember when Colin Mc Rae Rally 2 got released, it was a big hit, tons of people played it, including people who don't play much vidya, and tried to get better times all the time.

The only rally game I put a lot of time into was International Rally Championship (such a cliché name...) on PC. We even used to hook up 2 computers with my bro and compete. It wasn't a full simulation, it was like in between simulation and arcade, was a lot of fun.

RBR might be better only in terms of driving physics, and maybe sound effects because that's not really Rally Championship's strong point. But everything else - RC wins
>36 LONG (5-20min) and AUTHENTIC stages vs 24 (~5min) made-up stages (72 vs 36 if you count driving the other way as a separate stage)
>more cars, of varied classes
>more environments (RBR doesn't have night stages, dense fog stages, mixed surface stages)
>better damage model (cars wear down just from driving, have to balance driving fast vs sparing the car -- in RBR it's damage from collisions only)
>better pace-notes (RBR loves to stack shit up while already taking a series of corners, completely out of sync with the driver/car -- it's worse than a fucking satnav)
>better replay mode (40-50 cameras vs 4? in RBR; can cut/paste parts and make a nice highlight reel or a 90's-like rally footage)
>stages don't have invisible walls 10 meters away from the road; stages end where the fences/trees are
Rally Championship gives an all-round better rally experience

Rally championship 2000 is a game that has always been on the hard disk of every computer I owned.

Sure the driving model is pretty simplistic, but the long stages and the environments were done masterfully. I really had the feeling I was going across the english countryside.

Also the feeling that no game has matched until now, was the whole man vs environment. Being almost at the end of a rally, when a night snowy stages come. Just before the stage you had already to take some decision on what parts to repair and what to sacrifice, the car is not in the best shape, but that will have to do.

The stage starts, the electrics are failing, the headlights blink erratically on/off. The steering makes the car veer dangerously in one direction, something you need to take into account if you don't want to roll over a mound.

You need to push to make up precious second, but the engine overheats, you curse the time you spent to replace tires, then you lose a gear.

Jesus christ what a game, what an experience. Nowadays rally games have 3 minutes stage and they give you more than enough time to repair just about everything about your car.

Is there some remake of this or upgraded textures/res?
