I remember playing a wad map of 30 something maps all made in one day. It was an excellent gameplay oriented wad that I'd like to replay but I've forgotten the name. I think it had "speed" in the name of the wad, like speedmapping something perhaps. Any idea?

Also I've started playing Back to Saturn X (Episode 1: Get Out Of My Stations) and it kicks ass. I don't know TOO much about Doom wads but I've played a few (like maybe, 20 wads total) and I've started playing this one because it had Skillsaw in it and I loved everything that guy did. But the other maps, not by him, are good too.

it's a good place to discuss issues quickly if you know how to resist bait posts, since 95% of the board is bait posts and considering there is no ego involved of karma or registering you can get to the heart of issues faster, discussions there on economics i've found to be pretty interesting commentary

Whenever you open up the GZDoom executable, this dialog box should pop up. You should check the textfile of the wad you're trying to launch to see what IWAD it uses. For example if the wad needed Doom 2 to run, you would select that, if it needed Heretic you would select that, and so on.

it's an overlooked detail, sometimes wads don't come with helpful .txt which tell you what they do and replace (like old wads did)
some even use tnt or plutonia
you'll know which one to pick if it says so, and if not, just try them all for fun results

MESS can emulate the SGI Indigo2. Albeit very poorly.

You can run NeXTSTEP on x86, but its a pain in the ass, you wouldn't even really want to. Its better just to set up a *nix distro with AfterSTEP or Window Maker. I think there is some kernel module or library or something that will allow you to run NeXT applications.

Strangely enough, the NeXT version of Doom (both during development and the release version) ran faster than the DOS version on the same hardware. (486DX2-66)

Maybe something to do with its being written in Objective-C and the compiler they used? They used Watcom for DOS, likely something completely different on NeXT.

/g/'s wad comes in the form of ARCHIE.WAD, story follows, and then the download link. too big!

Timeline 1: DON'T REPRODUCE - THE ETERNAL ARCH LINUX SAGA
This timeline is played first by the player but chronologically happens second. Here, the player directly plays as an arch linux user. "Archie", the "greatest and most hardc0re arch linux user ever", is the main character of this story. It is designed to give a normal person a look into the inner shitty workings of an arch loser's mind, their mentality and psuedo-reasoning behind justifying the mentality, and what their schedule looks like. Play at your own risk!

Archie hates ubuntu and most other non-autist distros because he thinks linux is not a free operating system for everyone, but instead his own personal secret club. Archie must do a variety of self-invented tasks to build up fake distro hipster cred that he thinks is worth anything, ranging from (unpaid) spreading of FUD on ubuntu forums, protecting the arch wiki from "ubuntu scrubs", making his distro shittier, spending hours making his distro harder to use, failing at configuring pacman, going on /g/, failing at a job, jerking off to his waifu, pretending his waifu is a real person, and dodging the constant barrage of bullets that is his own arch install.

1263135

Timeline 0: JOBHOLDER - THE DEATH OF ARCHIE
This timeline is played second by the player but chronologically happens first. In this part of the story the player assumes the role of the Debianfriend, who progressively sees his friend Archie ruin himself as a human being by turning his mind off to everything that isn't arch and anime. Watch as this sadness and tragedy is manifested through glorious psycho-existential objects to push a feeling through to you. As this timeline progresses the player switches over to Archie once again and things get more abstract and psychotic until the climax of Archie's "suicide", resulting in an absolutely astounding representation of him passing the existential singularity through a level straight out of a nightmare.

Sorry, can't think of any particular place, I just happen to know a metric shitton of trivial information.

Nekochan is a good resource for learning about SGI Visual Workstations. Think they have their own wiki. Used to have an SGI Indy, sold a few years ago, though. SGI actually bundled a Doom port with the shareware version on the supplemental disk that came with the latest IRIX. It was also available on their FTP, along with the source, and maybe it still is. It ran great, but only in a window, but you could change the resolution with a argument in the terminal window. No music, the Indy didn't have any MPU-401 or anything, and I'm not even sure if there was any MIDI support on IRIX. It would need some sort of extra hardware if it did.

MESS Project (and its further-in-progress fork, UME) is an attempt to emulate FUCKING EVERY COMPUTER SYSTEM AND CONSOLE THEIR EVER WAS.

nextcomputers.org for NeXT information.
Doom was developed initially on Motorola 68040-based NeXTcubes.

And I thought I heard about Dooms performance on NeXT during an interview with one of the id guys that Doomworld did in 1998, but can't seem to find it now. I KNOW i've heard it somewhere.

And when it comes to Linux and other Unix-likes, they're is just so much info out there. Linux Professional Institute cert research materials?

Not trying to sound like a dick, but Google is seriously your best bet. I can try to answer some questions about this kind of stuff if you have any.

Oh god.
Sure, the game may WORK, but you would not want to play it on a 386.

This is on the fastest 386, the AMD Am386DXL-40: http://youtu.be/gIQVUK9hhBE?t=1m30s With the screen size scaled down all the way, its more playable, but still shitty. Imagine what a low or midrange 386 would be like, especially the SX's, which only had a 16-bit external data bus.
And sound puts some strain on the CPU as well.

it has a shitty extractor that you have to use windows or wine to open. once you have it, it's a .wad and .deh. make sure you load both in your source port.

any modern one will work, but you will miss out on a few jokes, like how he made a room that said "don't enter" and when you did it would crash the game with a message like "I told you so" or something.

Brutal is fun as another one of the many other gameplay wads out there, I found it to be pretty fucking fun though.
I replayed E1,2 and 3 with it.

But yeah, the whole "this is what doom is meant to be!" stuff is annoying.
It's over the top ultraviolence and fatalities and the like is a real crowd pleaser, though.

I played it and I use /pol/. I think it captured the essence of how /pol/ was when it came out, but did certain things strangely. For example, the JIDF in pol.wad are portrayed as red spacemen(?) with plasma rifles...I just don't get it.

Also, the SSG room didn't make much sense to me either. I get the whole "shrek your privlege" pun, but at that time, shrek-chan was a fairly new thing, so when I saw a bunch of shreks inna room with (largely) anti-SJW themes, it didn't make sense; because of shrek-chan, shrek was a symbol of the illuminati/conspiracy theories, not a symbol of antifa, feminism or dickbutt-rights.

I loved the "message" given by the opening room, though. Although they all seem united in cause, you take a pot-shot at a collective of similar yet diverse peoples (i.e. nazi's, black nationalists, jidf, conservatives -- the characters represented in "the big room") and then run and hide, inevitably, they'll infight and kill themselves without you having to do much work at all.
THAT speaks volumes...about /pol/, about revolutionary politics in general, and about 2013's zeitgeist in american politics. It's fucking beautiful.

well, from what I can tell, the kike-o-demon was more representative of the "big jew" who sits at the top of the so-called jewish world conspiracy. Notice how he baits you into his lair, just like the jew (to a conspiratard anyway) has baited western finance into his lair...

I'm thinking that the jidf soldier (as a "spaceman") is supposed to show that the ewige jude has such power that even his foot soldier's are equipped to the max, and are technically superior in their efforts to defend judaism.

>I think that was alluding to that popular photo edit of that...uh...is it a man?

Yeah, that pic is of some british genderqueer antifa activist....which is why I thought of the room as being representative of SJW (social justice faggotry -- gay rights, leftism, minority rights, feminism etc) rather than what shrek was getting known for at the time, which was shrek-chan, a front site for an (alleged) ARG site that acted like it was being run by the illuminati.

I wholly get the pun they were making -- it's just that it crosses themes to me because in my mind
>die cis scum = SJW
>shrek = illuminati
...thus it is a good pun on "check your privlege", but coming immediately after "the big room", where the message is symbolic, rather than a simple pun, it crosses things a bit by making the player interpret the message as pure word-play, where before he had to interpret symbolic content.

Mine is PrBoom-plus.
It retains all of the cool shit vanilla had, but has compatibility for large Boom-compatible WADs, along with PNG, MP3/OGG support. And it runs on everything.

MBF is a close second.

GZDoom is third. I don't play a whole lot of those modern gameplay-overhaul pk3s. Russian Overkill is fun as fuck, though.

That wasn't in the wad, but either way I don't know why this is even a thing, it's known by everyone that Southwest Aryans are white. I should know, I dated one in HS.

Second Amendment could have possibly been mentioned but I couldn't think of a good way to do it that wouldn't break the flow of the level, though I might go back and add more to it later (probably something that takes away the players' guns temporarily.) I picked the JIDF soldier because he's a weird looking nazi soldier from the wolfenstein games and stands out to the player (which is important since he's a bigger threat), also because he's better equipped than any individual other nazi even though he is always outnumbered. He also, unlike the hitscan nazis, doesn't ever infight with others like him. You'll also notice he is always in amongst other nazis, not in groups of his own kind, except in the secret JIDF room in the yellow key room (meant to symbolize that he's an infiltrator.) He also has the same sight and death sounds as the CacoJews. I don't know if any of this made sense to anyone but me though.

I actually had no idea shrek-chan was a thing.

I may go back and redo portions of /pol/.wad to add more content, especially as other board wads eclipse it in scope and quality (which I hope happens, since it means the board project is coming along.)

Also everything will likely stay separate for the time being until we have enough to put into a release or an episode or whatever. Whenever we decide how to do that. If you search on the archive, we've had discussions but no consensus on whether it should be episodes like Doom, a megawad like Doom 2, hubs, pistol start each level, episode resets like Scythe 2 and others, or some combination of the previous. It's also easier to keep them separate for the time being so authors can go back and easily change their work as they see fit.

Resuming my playthrough of Back To Saturn X Episode 1 now as my own way of celebrating Doom's anniversary

This wad is REALLY good in terms of design (archicture, detailing, colours), layout, gameplay and even music. The only 'issue' I've found is that i've been fully stocked on ammo for the 2 first types of ammo for 2 maps now, but then again I'm playing on skill3 and I just ran past 2 bosses without killing them at the end of this map. I should have picked skill4 I guess but i think skilL3 has enough enemies as it is and some wads are already hard on #3

I had no real idea at first either, but I went to the doombuilder 2 website and followed the video tutorials.
Was a liiiitle tedious but especially if you want to map in just doom 2 format it's pretty damn easy. It just *looks* daunting.

>>1264818
>I've drawn maps sketches in notebooks but I can't keep on with making it, I always get bored and let it gather dust.

You sound like me, I draw map areas and do ideas in my spare time. I lost interest for a while (and forgot all the tutorial lessons) but I've since come back to it.

I guess the main reason for me is, I'd really like to make something that others will enjoy and the image of what the map would look like get's clearer in my head all the time and I just keep thinking "you know anon, this wont finish itself" so it's a real labor of love.
You can only do it if you like it and after working on a map and going away from it you fulfill that part of your mind that is like "i did shit today....i've accomplished something".

>>1264825
I'd echo this comment as well.
You can also look at assets (particularly textures) from Realm667 to get juices flowing of the kind of place you may want to create.

Also think about the fights themselves, not just the scenery.

I think I know why they canned doom 4 or like to think.
Its hell on earth right, Hell invaded earth.
Hell is well... hell, full of evil damnation of sick gruesome pain.

Seeing people decapitated, women (and men) violated
children harvested and other fucked up shit.
This setting is not possible with the culture sensitive state the industry is in.
Looking at the leaks and the trailer music, they seem to stray away
from seeing the world in eyes of doomguy and see it through civilian and military survivors.
Instead of bastardize it they canned it.

What do you want to see in doom 4?
I wanted to see a variety of enemies, by variety i mean like 5 different imps, zombies ,Hell knight.
Demons have a hierarchy and interact. (advanced AI for a team to work together and help each other out fighting against humans)

I really didn't like how 343 took it upon themselves to make changes to the aesthetics as well as the general quality.
They reused halo 3 cortana for some odd reason, she doesn't even look like nefertiti. I liked each game she like upgrades herself.
Well what do you expect from a studio who hired people who hated/not interested in the franchise who happen to be COD dewrito-bros as playtester and feedback and took the initial story idea from the original team and threw it out the window saying it was too traditional and said they need to make it big so having a twist or off the wall of Prometheus is the way to go.

I think the reasons given was that it was too much like a shitty COD reskin so the whole thing got canned, thanks goodness for that but lets just hope they dont make something equally terrible with 4.

I fear great expectations might bring it down though but I'm probably just being pessimistic.

As for what I'd like to see, the ease of modding that came with earlier releases but as the tech level advances the ability to quickly mod becomes that much harder. Beth being Beth are likely to release modding tools, but by that same token they're fucking lazy developers who for a long time seem to assume that the modding community can just pick up the slack where they either cant be fucked adding content or optimizing their engine.

Sure it's contracted to ID but Beth's influence will still taint development.

>>1265398
In retrospect I enjoyed it myself, but it really came down to the fact that it was just not like doom 1 & 2 at all.
There is "oh we have to be moving foward" and yeah that's true, but Painkiller is closer to Dooms gameplay while still moving ahead technologically.
On a related note, anybody who says "outdated mechanics" unironically needs to be euthanized because they really dont know what it is they're talking about.

I like different kinds of shooters but the industry still has shit reviewers who think all shooters have to be a certain way.

Would be great if archvile was literally a evil pope or something. He interrogates scientist to force them to research teleportation so hell can take over Heaven (HARDON COLLIDER LOL) and experiment hellish projects weapons and etc.

And if they answer "rather be dead" they torture them and kill them and if they die they revive/heal them or let their family be raped or mangled to death and revive/heal them back to normal to do it all over again.

If you wanted a computer, you need to make sure to raise/lower the ground as far as you need it. It looks like you just barely lowered the ceiling.

If that is actually a different room, and you're complaining you can see through the wall, make sure your line defs are pointing the right way, otherwise you'll have the wrong end of the texture pointing outwards, making the wall see-through.

>I think I know why they canned doom 4
They canned an early build or concept of Doom 4, simply because it was too "Cowadoody", so Carmack said no.

As for violence, what the fuck are you talking about? There's a fucking ton of violent games now, why would that have changed? Far Cry 3, came out just last year, there's lots of violence there, one of the segments have you crawl out from the bottom of a mass grave, in first person, with dead bodies covered in blood weighing down on you.
The Fallout games from just the last couple of years were chock full of gratuitous violence, involuntary amputations, drug abuse, prostitution, allusion to rape, etc.
Rage includes lots and lots of violence, blood and dead bodies, you can cut off enemies heads with metal blades, the enemies swear like sailors.

Because it's fucking Doom, there's going to be dead bodies everywhere, large pools of blood gathered from the dead, heads on pikes, dead bodies hanging from the ceiling. Why do you think they'll fucking censor themselves now, when they haven't before?

What kind of fucked up management does id have that they let the game go that long and end up that off-track of its core philosophy and then have to start over?

Like, did they not have a solid direction? Did they not have good designers keeping an eye on everything?

The whole 2 weapon limit thing is ass backwards though, I can understand it from the "realism" point if view but when this is lumped in with health that literally regenerates the idea goes out the window entirely.

It's about what is fun for the game, ARMA II can say it has this because it actually tries to be realistic. A game is just trying to have it's cake and eat it if it says it's realistic meanwhile showing things that are profoundly not. Even in Doom you had to find a medikit if you wanted to heal, in COD you hide for a bit and it's all back to normal. I hope the term "spunkgargleweewee" gains more traction.

How do you deal with Brutal Doom's framerate issues? I mean, I love Brutal Doom, but when I gun down a hallway full of baddies it is a lot less satisfying that my framerate drops to nothing. I have even brought my resolution down to 640x480, but it still lags when there is a lot of gore on the screen.

I am not playing on a toaster BTW.

If I was Mark, I'd lower the resolution on the gore sprites, because they're not even nearly detailed enough to justify their actual size. Second, I'd make the *SPLAT SPLAT SPLAT* sound effects play at a 33% chance, and at half volume. Maybe reduce the gore by one or two "spurts".

Seriously, the jam-firehose sound from dying and gibbing enemies are annoying as fuck.

Doom would be better off as a PvE loot based game than the shitty survival horror Doom 3 was, or the wannabe COD that Doom 4 was going to be. Gears of War and Borderlands are closer to what Doom was than most FPS games nowadays.

It's not that city maps are bad, but the game can't be 100% city maps, that's not exactly Doom.

Also, there was evidently CoD-stuff in there, so good thing Carmack tossed that shit out of there.

Yeah I see your point, but looking good and playing good are different things.
There are plenty of games out that look nice but are forgettable because of the shite gameplay, whereas we all know of a certain game that might not wow graphically but plays really well.

You know what my main worry is though? What really shits me off?

There will be a dev interview at some point and they'll be like "Yeah dude! it's a great game! played it as kids! we love doom!!"

and you'll know they're a pack of fucking liars just trying to get doom cred.

I'd actually not even mind so much if they were like "yeah look we did not play it much to be honest" because at least they'll be honest. I mean they'll probably fuck the vision of the game but at least they wont be a pack of liars and try to say people who reject it are just butthurt fanboys, hoping to play to stereotypes.
