I've been on a horror game kick lately, though, so I'm thinking of going back and playing this and its sequel to finally put those childhood nightmares to rest.

Nope, its awesome. Great mix of exploration, combat and atmosphere. Flawed controls, but neat game. Dat fucking blue bar tho...

Loved the atmosphere and soundtrack but hated nearly everything else. To be fair I only played the PS1 version and have read the N64 one improves a ton of the issues the first release had.

I liked the music better on PS1. As far as I know NC had a lot of changes between versions.

PC even had Crowley talking at the end of every level.

I remember seeing the cover and thinking it looked super interesting, but never had the chance to pick it up. Years later, I've heard nothing but people ragging on how terrible it was, but everyone here seems to like it. Was I lied to?

I'd say you should watch videos of the game and see if it interests you. I'll agree that the controls are poor tho.

Just be warned, it isn't nearly as good as the first one. There's only 5 or 6 types of enemies and the entire thing feels rushed. You were initially supposed to be able to play two characters but in the final release you only get one.

I still love the first NC, too. One of the most atmospheric games I've ever played - the burning London stage is a sight to behold.
