1258667 No.1258667[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

Started this again recently and I've been playing it like heck. I started and stopped it a whole bunch of different times through middle and high school, partly because I always had trouble wrapping my head around the convoluted (and poorly explained) game systems. This time, though, everything just seemed to click. I'm having a blast.

The story and soundtrack are just as good as I remember them.

What a game.

(fuck the PSP translation though, for real)

>> No.1258694

Look, I know this is /vr/ and all but I'm a Japanese->English translator and it's not even debatable that the PSP translation is far and beyond superior to the PS1 translation. The original is just awful in terms of translation. But the original is better than the PSP version in that it runs at a fast speed and sometimes your party members will shout out a quote before their action. The extra jobs they added in the PSP version aren't that great either and aren't worth the effort. So really, from a translation perspective I support the PSP version but on virtually all other characteristics the PS1 version is overall better.

Sure the original translation was written by a team of monkeys with typewriters, but I'll take its ineptitude over the PSP version's gagworthy faux-Shakespearean babbling any day. Plus, the sheer cluelessness of the original translation gave us a few lines of unintentionally awesome dialogue (see: OP, "Surrender or die in obscurity!")

Well, I've played remastered versions of these games, so I don't know shit about original ones, but according to guides, LUCT: 32, FFT: 28. It's not like "more means better"(it's 4 difference anyway), but I felt like FFT had more tight and harder conditions to unlock them, compared to Tactics Ogre. FFT soundtrack isn't bad, but I really liked only one music track: character preparation screen, others were pretty mediocre. While more than half of TT music is memorable and sends chills down my spine.

On the other hand, Ogre Battle > Tactics Ogre.

Tactics Ogre and FFT were both made by Matsuno anyway, why bother arguing about which is better?

FFT was originally going to be a side-story to the Ogre Battle Franchise before Matsuno moved from Quest to Sony, and they used the idea and re-labeled them. Which is why the plot-line of FFT follows so similarly to the plotlines of other Ogre Battle game, most notably the plot of Person of Lordly Caliber.

Except its not, because opinions are not facts. Opinions can be based on a fact, but in this situation there are no facts to back up your opinion.

The first time I played FFT I got my shit wrecked because I had no clue what I was doing, and I said it was a bad game. I picked up TO and I had more of an idea on how to play it. I got further in TO and enjoyed it more, so I called it a better game. Took another shot at FFT and now that I know what the fuck Im doing its just as good as TO.

TL;DR
FFT & TO are both equal games, they excel at and suffer from different things. The game you pick up to play should depend on what you want to get from it.

Opinion is when I prefer TO music or character names over FFT ones. But maps variety and size, more accessible and customizable classes, non-retarded boss battles and great plot is what makes Tactics Ogre great game, and Final Fantasy Tactic a mediocre one. The only reason why people keep praising FFT is because it's their first tactic game, so nostalgia goggles plays a big role.

What? The story in FFT is linear and shallow, and brings mostly "nobles vs peasants" dilemma. Setting can be thrown into "opinions" (but seeing seriously toned plot, but wuth kawai chocobo riding knights was awkward as fuck).

Maybe I should give this another shot. been 14 years i think. Honestly I think I was more stoked for this game than any in the ps1 era.

Played for 6+months. When I gave up I was at 60hours and maybe 3/5way through. Battles took forever and were getting so frustrating. Enemies just leveling up with me, any map backtracking I had these marathon fights all the time. I just remember my mages did no damage and my fighters missing a lot. Like 1/4 of the time, swing and miss. Or their sword just broke. Maybe my memories playing tricks on me, but I do remember at one point being so pissed I was tempted to snap the gamedisc, I think thats the day I quit.

But this threads got me thinking about it again. I was young, maybe I was doin something wrong, not building my classes correctly.

Monks, even as a subclass, are hella broken, no matter what level. Mages aren't that great, and serve more as a support role later in the game, since your holy/divine knights do AoE damage with instant gratification.

Once you get Orlandu, Beowulf, Worker 8, Better guns for Mustadio (steal from balk) etc, you will streamroll the game.

Beowulf can even one shot the fucking final boss. I discovered this by accident as a kid when I used Drain on Altima
